Saw this on the Cherrywood listserve and thought I'd pass it along in case this person crosses Airport Blvd. Suggest keeping an eye out for this vehicle. Monday morning in Wilshirewood around 4:30 AM a man wearing a black hoodie and driving a newer model black Cadillac Seville was spotted checking car door handles and looking for unlocked cars. He would drive a short distance park, get out and walk down the street checking parked cars. He made multiple stops in the area. A witness was able to get a license plate number and APD was called. We've seen a recent increase in car burglaries in Cherrywood over the last week and this person may be responsible. It is unclear as of now if he was approached by APD. In Cherrywood, the best way to prevent a car burglary is to: 1. Remove anything of value from the car; 2. Lock the car; 3. Park in the driveway rather than the street; 4. Be on the lookout for strangers, in a car or on foot, who are lingering on the street and watching homes or cars. Since my return to the office, I’ve reviewed several cases as well as community blog postings. Obviously, we simply can’t place an officer on every corner at every hour of the day. The primary function of Patrol Services is to respond to 9-1-1/3-1-1 calls for service. Our specialized units focus on designated tasks such as investigating felonious crimes as well as misdemeanor cases, and countless other objectives to insure the safety of our community. In addition, community outreach units engage in positive interaction with our citizens, youth, and conduct follow ups when the need arises. Many of the tasks previously mentioned are of the “reactive” nature while some lie more on the lines of “prevention.” Nevertheless, we want to work closely with our citizens on focusing more on crime prevention. I’ll refer to the fire triangle which is: fuel, heat, oxygen. If one element is removed then the fire will be extinguished. By no means is it suggested that victims are at fault. We work hard to enjoy the fruits of our labor and none of us deserve to be victims of a crime such as burglary. Yet our focus is NOT to be victims. Our agency will respond to burglary calls in an expeditious manner, but we still need assistance from the citizens that we serve and protect to help us with our focal point which is – prevent crime and stop our citizens from being victimized. Next, I’ll list some suggestions for all of us to consider in our collective crime prevention efforts. REPORTING · Call 9-1-1 immediately if you observe any criminal or suspicious activity · Remember that suspicious activity is anything that you feel doesn’t look right; if you’ve got a bad feeling then always call 9-1-1 · Report, report, report!!! If the incidents are not reported, do not expect our agency to be aware of what’s occurring in a particular part of the community. Continue to share information on blogs, but still call 9-1-1/3-1-1. · Don’t wait to call or feel like you’re bothering us [police]. It’s always better to be safe than sorry later and we love our jobs and all of its associated tasks. · Do not enter into homes if unauthorized entry is suspected! Entering into such a situation can place you and your family at risk of harm. This may also compromise the integrity of potential investigative actions. Allow us [APD] to clear your residence of suspects first. · Lastly, if you observe criminal or suspicious activity that you feel may be “related to burglary/theft activity” and aside from calling 9-1-1, you may call 3-1-1 and initiate a “Burglary Information” report. Burglary Information reports are routed to the Burglary Unit for review. RESIDENTIAL SECURITY · Keep blinds or drapes closed when away from home -Open blinds or shades allow criminals a clear line of sight into your home · Install a deadbolt lock. -Deadbolts are usually locked with a key from the outside and a thumb turn on the inside. -The cylinder should be pick resistant. -Lock your doors every time you leave the house, even if you’re leaving for just a few minutes during the day. -The most popular time for residential burglaries are weekday daylight hours. -In over 1/3 of burglaries, there is no forcible entry—someone forgot to lock the doors. · Install sold doors Outside doors should be metal or solid hardwood and at least 1 ¾ inches thick. Frames must be made of equally strong material and each door must fit its frame securely. · Keep garage doors closed and locked Open doors and windows are commonly checked by burglars looking for an opportunity. · Secure sliding doors and windows. -Cut a broom-handle to the length of the bottom track so that the window or door will not slide open when forced. -Also, drill one hole through both casings and sliding window and insert a nail or pin. · Secure sash windows -To prevent wooden sash windows from being pried open, drill a downward sloping hole into the top of the bottom window through and into the bottom of the top window and insert a pin or nail. -To prevent aluminum sash windows from being broken into, purchase a track lock that blocks the window track. · Mark your property -Mark your valuables with an engraver. Marking your property serves as a deterrent to would-be burglars and it helps police in identifying and returning stolen property. -Make a property identification list. -Put warning stickers on doors and windows. · Purchase a burglar alarm -A home alarm system can be a very effective burglary deterrent and fit into many people’s needs. -Remember to test your alarm monthly. · Leave a light on -When leaving on trips, leave a light on in the bathroom. -In the bedroom, attach a lamp and radio to a 24-hour electric timer set to go on at dusk and off at your bedtime. · Use Proper exterior lighting -Place a light over every door. -Double coning lights on each corner of the house will also light up windows. · Work together with your neighbors -When you are going to be away, tell trusted neighbors and ask them to watch your property. VEHICLE SECURITY · Always exercise the “HIDE, LOCK, TAKE” concept: Hide your belongings; Lock your vehicle; and Take your keys. · DO NOT leave any items of value in plain view. · Park in well lighted areas or your garage during nighttime hours. · Windows should be in the closed [up] position. BURGLARY AWARENESS Tips to combat burglary are as follows: 1. Install a deadbolt lock. Deadbolts are usually locked with a key from the outside and a thumb turn on the inside. The cylinder should be pick resistant. Lock your doors every time you leave the house, event if you’re leaving for just a few minutes during the day. The most popular times for residential burglaries are weekday daylight hours. In over 1/3 of burglaries, there was no forcible entry—someone forgot to lock the doors. 2. Install solid doors. Outside doors should be metal or solid hardwood and at least 1 ¾ inches thick. Frames must be made of equally strong material and each door must fit its frame securely. 3. Keep garage doors closed and locked. Open doors and windows are commonly checked by burglars looking for an opportunity. 4. Secure sliding doors and windows. Cut a broom-handle to the length of the bottom track so that the window or door will not slide open when forced. Also, drill one hole through both casings and sliding window and insert a nail or pin. 5. Secure sash windows. To prevent wooden sash windows from being pried open, drill a downward sloping hole into the top of the bottom window through and into the bottom of the top window and insert a pin or nail. To prevent aluminum sash windows from being broken into, purchase a track lock that blocks the window track. 6. Mark your property. Mark your valuables with an engraver. Marking your property serves as a deterrent to would-be burglars and it helps police in identifying and returning stolen property. Make a property identification list. Put warning stickers on doors and windows. 7. Purchase a burglar alarm. A home alarm system can be a very effective burglary deterrent and fit into many people’s needs. Remember to test your system monthly. 8. Leave a light on. When leaving on trips, leave a light on in the bathroom. In the bedroom, attach a lamp and radio to a 24-hour electric timer set to go on at dusk and off at your bedtime. Close bedroom drapes or blinds. 9. Use proper exterior lighting. Place a light over every door. Double cone lights on each corner of the house will also light up windows. 10. Work together with your neighbors. When you are going to be away, tell trusted neighbors and ask them to watch your property. Have neighbors maintain your yard. When on vacation, have someone cut grass. Shrubbery should not hide neighbors’ view of windows or doors. Have someone pick up newspapers, front door flyers and mail. Tell neighbors to call police if they notice anything suspicious. Burglary investigation information is as follows: • Fingerprints If identifiable fingerprints were lifted from the crime scene, they can lead to the development of a suspect in the future. You will be contacted by the detective only if those leads result in the identification of a known offender. Note: Due to a high volume of cases, it can take up to 6 months before fingerprint leads can be developed. • Stolen Property The Austin Police Department reporting system is linked to an automated system that checks pawn and resale shop inventory lists for specifically described property (make, model, serial numbers or engravings). • Surveillance Video Video is often captured of a suspect or suspects in the commission of a crime. The key to using such video to make an arrest is the identification of the suspect in the video. • Updating Your Case & Investigation Should you discover evidence or have additional information regarding your investigation, you may contact the Burglary Unit by phone, fax, or email. When you obtain serial numbers and/or information that uniquely identifies your property fax or email is the most efficient manner in which to update your report. When collecting information please ensure to include the following specific information: Electronics – Manufacturer/Model/Serial #/Value; Jewelry – Maker/metal & Color/Stones, type and quantity, engravings or identifiable marks The more unique the information, the greater the ability for detectives to search for pawned or resold stolen property. Serial number can often be found on the box in which the property was originally purchased. Serial numbers can also be retrieved when items have been registered for a warranty. Fall Fest October 29th at Maplewood Elementary School Help Requested!

Would anyone be interested in volunteering to translate this to Spanish for me? It would be greatly appreciated :) To those with children at Maplewood Elementary: Hi Again Neighbors, So far, I have received only a few interested in volunteering or making donations for this event. Maybe it's still a bit early for some folks to start thinking about this, yet I believe the sooner we start pulling this together, the more organized and fun it will turn out. In order to make this event successful, I believe we need to unite together as a community so we can give our children fond childhood memories of their elementary school years. My son Brandon has always loved the fall fests he attended at his last elementary school for the three years he was there and the one he attended at Maplewood Elementary last year. I believe what makes any school event successful is due mostly to the effort, interaction and involvement of the surrounding communities, parents & teachers within the school. My hopes are that we can all work together so we can make this fall fest the best one yet; so that everyone's child who decides to attend this year has a fantastic time. We are discussing some new additions to the fall fest this year that we believe will be exciting and beneficial to both the parents and children. More details will be forthcoming. As we get closer to the date, there will be flyers sent home in Wednesday folders announcing the event and our needs (some of those needs are listed in the original post below). The transportation committee met today. Since the committee mostly includes representatives of surrounding neighborhoods, we're now going to deal with more global issues during these meetings, and then I'll stay for a smaller meeting with Catellus and the City to discuss issues that are internal to Mueller. Here are my notes: - It sounds like this will happen at some point. Catellus has determined that it is feasible from an engineering standpoint but the City reported that it doesn't yet meet the warrants for a signal. The City will re-evaluate whether signal warrants are met on roughly a 6-month interval. Catellus' consultant has done an operational analysis for the full buildout condition and the intersection should operate well with a signal. They were asked to provide information on anticipated queuing lengths on both ZS and Airport for the full buildout condition, and compare these to the space available between Airport and Tom Miller, and the length of the left turn bay on Airport. – Included in the November bond package. The City is looking at low-cost immediate improvements including signing, edge markings where approach vehicles enter the roundabout, and adjusting the timing of the signal at Airport and Aldrich to minimize traffic backups. They were not planning to do any striping from 2 lanes to a single lane now but were asked to reconsider that option to improve safety. – The City is re-evaluating the consistency of signing and striping for parking, as well as the need for one-way operations in the alleyways. – Windsor Park representative stressed the importance of making this crossing of 51st St. safe for bicyclists and pedestrians, since many from across 51st will want to walk to the market district. The current proposal doesn't include any pedestrian improvements on 51st for this crossing traffic. There's also a desire to extend the bike lane from the west all the way to Berkman, and install more visible crosswalk markings (ladder or continental style). Catellus was asked to provide the committee with a copy of the layout currently under consideration. – The median on 51st is non-existent due to multiple layers of asphalt on the roadway. Concern was expressed for the safety of pedestrians who use this as median refuge to wait for traffic to clear. The City plans to take a look at this area. – The connection on 53rd St. from Cameron to the northbound IH 35 frontage road is very congested. The Windsor Park representative suggested that signs could be installed for eastbound and westbound traffic on 51st routing them through the regional retail area to access the northbound frontage road. This might relieve some of the burden on 53rd. The City said they would take it under consideration. – General complaints were brought forward about the striping out of the right lane in this area. Many people drive over the stripe and they are losing their visibility. Catellus' consultant will discuss this issue with TxDOT. – Discussion about possibly eliminating the exit near 53rd St., forcing exiting traffic to use the ramp just north of Airport. It was noted that this ramp can be difficult to access from the lower level of IH 35. If that exit were closed, the entrance ramp could be moved forward north near 53rd, serving Mueller regional retail traffic better and lengthening the weave for merging/diverging traffic. The committee will look at this further to determine whether there is a recommendation we want to make to TxDOT in this regard. – Wilshire Woods and Cherrywood neighbors across Airport Blvd. Generally support keeping these features in place to avoid cut-through traffic in their neighborhoods. – Several mentioned that this issue remains a concern. Crossing at Zach Scott will be easier once a signal is installed. Bicyclists can cross as pedestrians but are legally required to dismount their bicycles and cross as pedestrians. This is due, at least in part, to the fact that there are no approved crossing signals specifically for bicyclists. The City mentioned that Washington, DC is experimenting with a bicycle signal and the City was asked to investigate whether we could do likewise. – There was discussion about TxDOT's long term plans for IH 35. There have been previous studies but funding is very limited. For information about ongoing studies and upcoming meetings, go to http://www.my35.org. – The need for a stop of the #350 bus on Airport at Zach Scott was discussed. Wilshire Woods and Cherrywood would support an additional stop. Current northbound stops are at Anchor and north of the fire station. The City explained that Capital Metro has given those requesting this stop some misinformation that they are working to clarify. A sidewalk along Airport is part of the Mueller plan but due to the high speeds, absence of curb on Airport, and drainage ditch, the trail along Tom Miller was developed as an alternative sidewalk. The City and Catellus will discuss this issue further with Capital Metro, and see what sidewalk connections would be necessary to support a bus stop here. – Funding for studying improvements to better serve Windsor Park are included in the November bond package. – Catellus will plan these after meetings to discuss issues specific to Mueller residents. They are also looking at other ways to better communicate with residents on transportation issues. – In some areas, parking signs and/or stripes appear to allow parking in locations prohibited by state law, such as within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, or 30 feet upon the approach to a stop sign. Catellus will get with the City to conduct a review and implement changes as needed. – Catellus and the City are discussing the possibility of converting the alleys to 2-way operation. This would eliminate a lot of signs and would be expected to lower operating speeds since people would anticipate meeting another vehicle. – Catellus is reviewing the operations at several driveways where sight distance is limited and/or speeding on the street is a problem. – Speeds on these long, straight streets were discussed along with potential solutions such as a 4-way stop on Zach Scott at Camacho, at the entrance to Lake Park. Catellus will seek input from the City on what solutions they might consider. Catellus will also explore the possibility of installing signs such as 'children at play' and emphasize to residents our responsibility to drive with consideration for others. Lowering the speed limit to 25 mph was also discussed as a possibility but no decisions were made. I think that's about it.... many of these things will take a lot of coordination and many more discussions to resolve. I'm happy to continue collecting input on these issues. Our next meeting will be in late October so I'll need to forward my agenda items to Catellus mid-October.Betsy
Historic Tax Exemptions

I know many of you share my passion and concern for historic landmarks in our city. Those who know me, know that I have feared the runaway landmark zoning abuses in west Austin could sink the lifeboat, and it seems as though my fears are coming true. ACC has just voted to withdraw from participation in historic tax exemptions this year. Hopefully the City of Austin, AISD, Travis County, and even ACC will all come to understand the need a TARGETED FIX to the historic landmark tax exemption program; and not choose a simplistic "baby-and-bathwater-bludgeoning" of ALL historic properties capping, eliminating or lowering all historic exemptions across the board. THE PROBLEM IS SF-ZONED RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS, where it is stylish and easy to hire consultants to get a landmark designation for already well maintained mansions. In many cases these homes were not of landmark quality, and all are owned by the comfortable or wealthy. These very nice homes are not being threatened by neglect or demolition; they suffer no economic need. IT SERVES NO PUBLIC PURPOSE TO WASTE OUR HISTORIC PRESERVATION EFFORTS, PUBLIC GOODWILL, OR ECONOMIC RESOURCES ON THESE RESIDENTIAL MANSIONS. Alternatively, downtown (where the oldest, venerable, and vulnerable historic landmarks are situated), many of these buildings are burdens on their owners, struggling to compete economically as small offices, or retail. Many of these are like the James Brown House at 7th & Guadalupe built in 1846. Built on the actual bedrock (as the foundation), by hand before the civil war, with solid masonry rubble and stucco walls and thin wooden single pane windows. Hard to heat and cool, excessive common areas (tenants do not want to pay for non-efficient, non-usable areas), no ability to relocate or move walls to suit an office tenant's needs, expensive to maintain, and requiring annual patching and painting of the rubble/stucco walls, which crack through traffic vibration of the bedrock. The James Brown House is fairly typical of WHY the program was instituted and is a glaring example of the NEED, and the PUBLIC PURPOSE. This ORIGINAL AUSTIN CORE AREA (the original city of Austin...downtown and part of east Austin), and these non-SF (single family zoned) commercially zoned properties need to have the current historic tax exemption program maintained, in order to compete and survive. Downtown land is extremely expensive, with high-rises being the "highest and best" use. This economic pressure makes it difficult to induce owners to offer property for historic landmark designation, but also drives up tax valuation on already historically zoned downtown properties, whose land is UNDEVELOPABLE due to the historic limitation. Giving these a tax break is FAIR, and serves the PUBLIC PURPOSE. Old Enfield, Pemberton Heights, and similar neighborhoods with monolithic SF-3 zoned properties, that are high-end, well maintained, owner occupied residences, are NOT FACING ANY REAL CHALLENGE OR THREAT. These west Austin mansion/homes currently ARE the HIGHEST AND BEST USE OF THEIR ZONING! Conclusion, TARGET THE FIX. Don't revise the historic landmark tax exemption program by limiting or capping it for ALL PROPERTIES. Deal with either base district zoning for NON-SF (commercial) or deal with geographic "downtown & east Austin" differently and allow these properties or areas, to continue with the current program. TARGET THE FIX. One size does not fit all. I am encouraged to see Travis County's Judge Biscoe's quotes in the attached Statesman Article today: "I think there are too many historical exemptions, they amount to too much money, and there are too many beneficiaries paying too little as a result," said Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe. Particularly when the exemption is coupled with a homestead exemption and a tax break for homeowners older than age 65 , he said, "we have some owners of valuable property who pay next to nothing in taxes. That was not the program's intent." Judge Biscoe clearly appears to understand where the problem resides, NOT WITH ALL PROPERTIES but rather the recent high-end SF home abuses. He goes on to further state: He said he doesn't envision the county "wiping out the exemption completely, but I do see us making it more difficult to obtain, maybe by putting a cap on the exemption or eliminating it for some." I agree! Eliminate or cap it for some, but not all. Also of note is Allen Kaplan, vice chairman of the Austin Community College's board: "The third motivation is what the city did this past year, which was give piles of historic exemptions in West Austin, some of which are seriously questionable," We are at a critical point in the public discussion, and we need to make sure that we TARGET THE ABUSE, THE RISK, AND THE PROBLEM. Outlying SF neighborhoods which are actively planning or applying for Local Historic Districts should not be allowed to abuse the historic landmark program. Done properly with strong private owner support, LHDs truly ARE the best preservation tool for these residential neighborhoods, NOT historic landmarking with historic tax breaks. Meeting notes by Betsy HiltonMueller Transportation Committee meeting on June 30, 2010The committee is chaired by Leo Lopez at Catellus. Representatives from several adjacent neighborhoods (Cherrywood, Windsor Park & JJ Seabrook) were in attendance, along with staff from Catellus’ consultant, HDR, and the City of Austin.Agenda Items that we had time to discuss:- Leo welcomed everyone and gave an update on upcoming major activities in Mueller - basically the same info that Greg presented at the developer update. Infrastructure construction for garden homes at Hermalinda/Antone/Tom Miller should start about July 9. - Update on traffic counts - City presented numbers to PIAC a month or two ago. No huge increases were observed but they hadn’t compared the actual numbers to the volumes predicted in the Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) prepared when the development was being planned. The City seemed to think that might be a worthwhile comparison to review.- Traffic Signal at Zach Scott & Airport - Plans are complete, including the work necessary to deal with the Spring causing water issues in the ground boxes for the signal. Catellus will pay for the signal but the City will do the installation. There was some discussion about combining it with the funds transfer for the next phase of residential housing but Catellus agreed that it could be separated so as not to delay the signal installation. The City staff present were not positive the signal had met the necessary traffic warrants to be installed, so they will check. We also talked about the failure of some motorists coming from Airport (esp. left turners) to yield to pedestrians crossing on the trail near Tom Miller. The crosswalk already has high visibility markings and a pedestrian crossing warning sign so we’re not sure what else can be done. City will review whether a NO U-TURN sign is present for the difficult northbound to southbound movement.- Parking signage/striping review - In areas where parking spaces are marked, they are not always marked and signed consistent with State Law (prohibited 15’ from fire hydrant, 20’ from crosswalk, and 30’ on approach to a Stop Sign). Also discussed whether alley connections to streets are legally defined as ‘intersections’ requiring these same parking restrictions. State law [Transportation Code 541.303 appears to exclude alleys.] There was also general discussion about the many signs in the neighborhood. City philosophy may be changing and some believe many of these signs could be removed, where they are redundant with state law (which all drivers are supposed to be familiar with). [See Chapter 7, Texas Drivers Handbook, available at http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/InternetForms/Forms/DL-7.pdf. HDR and City staff will review the placement of signs/stripes and the need for such.- Roundabout improvements - City’s new Assistant Director for Traffic Engineering, Gary Schatz, has some roundabout experience and has recommended physical changes to our roundabout to narrow the two lane approaches to one-lane prior to entering the roundabout. A ‘truck apron’ would also be installed, concentric to the center island, to further clarify that this is a one-lane roundabout. These improvements should significantly improve traffic operations and safety, especially as volumes continue to increase. The City plans to include this work in an upcoming bond package, with construction likely in 2011. Traffic already backs up into the roundabout during the afternoon rush, so they are also looking at improvements at the signal, including potentially a 2 lane left turn movement onto Airport Blvd. We also discussed the possibility of installing higher visibility crosswalk markings to help encourage drivers to stop for the signal before blocking the crosswalk. The City will look into this.- Bike movements to cross Airport - Cherrywood representative Girard Kinney mentioned that bicyclists crossing Airport tend to make an illegal maneuver to cross the road (due to the Longhorn configuration) and asked whether a bike path could be marked parallel to the crosswalk. There was discussion about whether a bicyclist legally must dismount to use the crosswalk as a pedestrian, or whether it’s legal for them to use the crosswalk while riding the bicycle. The City will look into this. A similar issue is also present at all crossing of Airport Blvd, where people want to get across in the crosswalk as quickly as possible.- Dan Daniels from JJ Seabrook discussed their effort to look at issues with cut-through traffic on Tillery and safety on Pershing. He suggested that when looking at current traffic volumes, the baseline should not be what existed when the airport was still open. They also have issues with sidewalks on FM 969 being right next to the road, and issues with the Airport/MLK intersection. Speeds and volumes on FM 969 are very high. JJ Seabrook will reach out to this committee to coordinate as needed.- Windsor Park representative, Rick Krivoniak, discussed concerns about the 51st and Berkman intersection, esp. that it will be huge once rebuilt as part of the Market District (based on what he sees at the Berkman/Manor intersection). Also, the eastbound bike lane on 51st just stops before it gets to Berkman. Some additional street width is needed, or a connection to the Mueller trails/sidewalk.We were running over our allotted time so we quickly discussed the following:- Schedule another meeting before September so we can keep things moving- Invite Cap Metro to a future meeting to discuss transit service to the neighborhood- Bike lane improvements - City plans to install on Manor from Airport to 51st street when they resurface the street under the next bond program (maybe 2011). City will look at whether interim lanes could be installed on Mueller Blvd. up to 51st.- Street repairs at Threadgill & McCloskey - supposed to begin ‘1st week of July’ but we should get an update from the City via Catellus.- Pavement cracking around manholes, esp in Phase II. Phase II had a different road contractor (Rodman) than Phase I (J C Evans). Manholes are very fixed (concrete, deep, etc), whereas asphalt pavement is called ‘flexible pavement’ for a reason, and does move. Some cracking is to be expected and Catellus says the folks they’ve checked with at the City don’t anticipate large-scale problems around every manhole.We didn’t get to talk about:- Airport Blvd. makeover and bike lanes up to Lamar- Sight distance for vehicles pulling onto Zach Scott from side streets- Update on options to fix the jughandle issues (at IH 35/Cameron/51st) that impact Windsor Park neighborsEV charging stationsLet me know if you have additional or continuing concerns and I’ll do my best to bring them forward at future meetings.Thanks,Betsy

Most burglaries in your neighborhood are being committed by youths 18 and under. They are not skilled professionals, but they will take advantage of an easy target. Don't make it easy for them. 1. Install a deadbolt lock. Deadbolts are usually locked with a key from the outside and a thumb turn on the inside. The cylinder should be pick resistant. Lock your doors every time you leave the house, even if you're leaving for just a few minutes during the day. The most popular times for residential burglaries are weekday daylight hours. In over 1/3 of burglaries, there is no forcible entry--someone forgot to lock the doors. 2. Install solid doors. Outside doors should be metal or solid hardwood and at least 1 3/4 inches thick. Frames must be made of equally strong material and each door must fit its frame securely. 3. Keep garage doors closed and locked. 4. Secure sliding doors and windows. Cut a broom handle to the length of the bottom track so that the window or door will not slide open when forced. Also, drill one hole through both casings and sliding window and insert a nail or pin. 5. Secure sash windows. To prevent wooden sash windows from being pried open, drill a downward sloping hole into the top of the bottom window through and into the bottom of the top window and insert a pin or nail. To prevent aluminum sash windows from being broken into, purchase a track lock that blocks the window track. 6. Mark your property. Mark your valuables with an engraver. Marking your property serves as a deterrent to would-be burglars and it helps police in identifying and returning stolen property. Make a property identification list. Put warning stickers on doors and windows. 7. Purchase a burglar alarm. A home alarm system can be a very effective burglary deterrent and fit into many people's needs. Remember to test your system monthly. 8. Leave a light on. When leaving on trips, leave a light on in the bathroom. In the bedroom, attach a lamp and radio to a 24-hour electric timer set to go on at dusk and off at your bedtime. Close bedroom drapes or blinds. 9. Use proper exterior lighting. Place a light over every door. Double cones lights on each corner of the house will also light up windows. 10. Work together with your neighbors. When you are going to be away, tell trusted neighbors and ask them to watch your property. Have neighbors maintain your yard. When on vacation, have someone cut grass. Shrubbery should not hide neighbors' view of windows or doors. Have someone pick up newspapers and mail. Tell neighbors to call police if they notice anything suspicious
Rosedale neighborhood uses Twitter to fight crime

First, let's be REAL CLEAR. The posted article is about the Rosedale neighborhood...very tony west Austin neighborhood near Central Market, and not Rosewood, an east Austin neighborhood near Rosewood-Zaragosa park. Not near as many iphones and blackberrys in Rosewood as Rosedale, dig? I could see people in Rosedale doing this because crime is probably less frequent, and they're bored and want something to talk about. Twitter-based crime watch sounds a lot like a neighborhood crime watch robo-call system in a neighborhood I used to live in. No matter how much we thought we were just sharing information about the reality of our surroundings, it certainly had the effect of creating a sense of fear that was not in line with reality. It was too easy to broadcast things that would affect other's lives in unforseen ways. As much I see people mis-understand and seek clarification from other's facebook and twitter posts, imagine what that could look like when you mix in a little crime. I would prefer the APD's COPS program that Dan espouses for a place like Mueller, or an online crime watch that has a healthy attitude that crime exists everywhere and Mueller is probably intriguing to the criminal-minded.

I always say that the best way to sell newspapers is to put a picture of an overweight, balding, database programmer in it. Fortunately, the Statesman has heeded this sage advice and I am told that this Sunday’s paper will have my mug somewhere in it. The Statesman also felt it was time for a report card on Mueller. Being in school currently as a grad student, I can relate to the butterflies in the stomach as I await my grade. I hope I pass. I’ve been told that the online site will have an interactive picture something-or-other. The reporter’s cameraman came out to my super cool Superbowl (side note: Spell check just offered “superb owl” for the word Superbowl) party and took some snaps of me grilling, setting up the outdoor movie screen and the family friendly atmosphere that I had as the commercial “Oscars” were shown, my favorite being the Alec Baldwin is an alien . I personally feel that Superbowl Monday should be a holiday. Is it only strange to me that the one day that everyone and I do mean, EVERYONE, goes to a party, they all have to work the next day? I’ll be sure to update the peanut gallery when the paper comes out, as well as when I get approved for a holiday and my other football/law pet peeve of a for beer sales coinciding with kickoff of the NFL. When did our government hate football so much? As in keeping with my new theme for the blog for buying my house as soon as possible, my of selling myself as a party host or motivational speaker ended with me making a whopping net profit of $14.50. I’m only $276,985.50 away from home ownership. I think this is a fantastic result and gets me on my way. Just got to remember, baby steps, my friends… baby steps….Every little bit helps. I’m definitely going to do the auction again some time this year. For this month’s shenanigan to buy my beautiful garden court home, I offer these proclaiming Mueller is the best place to live in on earth. I’ll only make $5 for shirt so I’ll need to sell 55,397 to meet my goal. To put this in another way, if 3.47% of Austin’s population buys one, I’ll be living the high life. I’m even going to throw in some really expensive stuff to cut down on the volume in case of the blog’s fans is awash with cash and needs to off load it really, really quick. Did you know that a can go for 7 months without eating, drinking, peeing or pooping? While technically, without heat loss, this doesn’t qualify for a classic case of hibernation, however, I would not want to be in that bathroom line in the bear family when it wake up time. With the long, harsh cold winter that we experienced here in Mueller, apparently hibernation was in full effect. I’ve gone from a designation of “Obese” to “Overweight” for my height. Luckily, the people who invented the BMI realize that everyone on the planet are built the same way and were able to find a generic scale to group them. More importantly, due to the hibernation, I’ve missed a whole group of new Muelllericans who moved in. With the short days and Jack Frost abetted wind gusts, I have been home bound and not outdoor socializing that was all the rage for the 9 non-winter months of the year. However, buds are starting to form on my immature trees and the parks are just filled with wave two of the Muelleropians. I’m so excited for this spring/summer’s outdoor gatherings. I think it would be fun to have a movie night at the pool one hot summer night. I’ll make it happen. The movie will be free, but I’ll sell the popcorn for $10,000 a bucket or $100 per kernel. The pool should be well stocked with underage fish-wannabees this summer. Speaking of the little genetic carriers, my genetic carrier #1 hits elementary this year. I have taken a tour of Maplewood and am really excited that he is going to go there. However, I know of quite a few new kindergarteners coming in from Mueller this year. I am certain that Maplewood is going to get overrun soon with our offspring. Do you hear this school board? I know you have Mueller down as a finalist for that last unnamed bonded school. Basically, here we come! Next time, I’ll discuss the new garden court, rate the playgrounds, and come up with another positively hilarious something or other. Maybe it’s time for a !

I'm basically with you on garden court goof, but I just wanted to clarify that the stone walls will eventually be 3 feet tall with a wrought iron topper. It should also have a nicely architected arbor entrance. Not sure if entrance will be masonry or wood.

Just to clarify: The wood beams in the model are actually sheet rock. The design team had them covered with a wood veneer. The wood veneer is not an option offered by Standard Pacific, though the sheet rock beams ("fur downs") are standard in several models.

A. Better wait until their financial situtation is clarified, which may occur tomorrow after the stock market closes (there will be an announcement about 4th quarter earnings tomorrow when they may declare bankruptcy - no one knows for sure). They, like a lot of builders, are in jeopardy and if they declare bankruptcy, it may be difficult for them to finish your house in a timely manner and for you to get warranty service. B. Check with Belinda in the Meritage model house and ask what's standard. There is a long list of items (stainless steel appliances, undermount sink, crown molding, etc.) that is standard on their homes but which you will pay top dollar to get from SPH. For example, SPH wants $1200 for a stainless steel undermount kitchen sink, while it is standard in the Meritage. Rounded sheet rock corners costs $900 in the SPH, but is standard in the Meritage. Don't assume that because you are paying SPH $100,000 or more than the most expensive Meritage home (or Weekley) that you are getting interior features of the same quality. C. Try to think of items that you really want in a home, and then make sure SPH will even offer it. Things like stone surround for the fireplace, obscure window in the master bathroom, decent laminate wood floor options, etc. They will not offer these at any price, even though every other builder at Mueller is doing so. Do not assume that because you have seen it at other SPH developments, that it will be available at Mueller. Even some items, like stone fireplace, that is standard on one model at Mueller, is not offered on others. D. Forget about any structural changes whatsoever. No windows, no moving walls, anything. E. Don't assume that because you see it in the model house, it will be offered. The wrought iron fence will not be an option, the wood beams in the great room is not an option. This bait and switch is old hat and I thought most builders had given up on that cheap trick. F. Many complaints on this forum relate to a specific plan, the Andrews/Duren (very similar, really) that is proving to be problematic. I think the Carothers is a very nice floor plan, as the model house shows, and your experience may be better because there are so many of us Pioneers who are up in arms about customer service and construction items. I need escapades. Im considered a bit hyper. I get overly excited real easy and so I need escapades otherwise I would get bored and end up spending hours playing an old copy of . I define escapades as something to keep my mind occupied. It usually is something hilarious and sometimes involves quite a huge project. Sometimes, after working on a escapade, my left brain will call me a fool and then the right brain will then tell me its true and then Ill stop that shenanigan and then work on the next one. This week I was thinking of new years resolutions and thought that I could tie my current escapade to a new years resolution. My new years resolution is to have my new Mueller house paid for by the end of the year. Im going to have to come up with over $300 thousand to do this. Now, Im not going to write a big check when I get the money, because I like the fact that you can claim the interest off your taxes and I think I can invest my money and make more than the that a mortgage company will give me on a 30 year loan, but I would like to have the cash available to pay for my house because that would be good to not have to worry about money. So how do I plan on making over 300 thousand this year? That is a perplexing question. I first thought up food flavor perfumes because I never understood why women wore flowery scents to attract mates when all the men care about is food. I was going to start my olfactory line with a, but then I realized that I have no idea how to create perfume, let alone go thru all the regulatory hassle to successfully release my scent. I also thought it would be a neat idea to start up a wind power company by installing small 1 kilowatt or smaller wind turbines on distribution poles (since the poles themselves are in cleared right-o-ways and can be tied to the grid with a proper transformer), but I would need a lot of upfront money which would defeat the purpose of rapidly massing funds to reach my goal. Plus, I would have to grease a lot of local politicians to force the power companies to allow me to attach my turbines, so this idea was nixed. My ideas for local establishments in the town center for either a small bowling alley(Strike-o-Rama) or a neighborhood bar (Aarons Stumble Inn) were shelved because of, again, the upfront money and that the town center is probably a phase two release which would be ready by the end of this year, and that limits my time for making the money by the end of the year. Im thinking that once my house is paid for, I can quit my boring computer dork job and be my own boss at my future local establishment. So, Ive settled on a website idea as this meets my low upfront cost, lack of regulations, and small time investment so I can keep my current job. I am going to sell pixels on website for a dollar a piece. Each pixel will have an X and a Y coordinate so you can tell your friends about your pixel. Upon clicking the pixel or via direct link to your pixel, a user will see a bigger form listing an image (or flash swf file) and information you can supply. I hope you all buy at least one pixel to support my goal as I only need to sell a third of the pixels to reach my goal. The website is http://www.peepdot.com and is safe to open up at work. Since this website is still being tested out, I would appreciate any feedback you might have. You can find my dot at . Two things I have left to fix is the main pages pixel grid is giving me lossiness and not updating but once a day and the resell page is not complete (plus for some strange reason the resell limits to values under 1000). And now for the house update. The house innards have started to appear. We now have cabinets and some of the inside doors. The cabinets are some kind of wood and look very nice. We upgraded the bottom cabinets to be drawers so that I dont have to reach in to put all the heavy pots in; Ill just be able to slide them open. We also realized that our shower in the master has not one, but two shower nozzles facing each other. It was a nice surprise because now Ill be able to turn one on hot water and one on cold and then I can spin around a like Ive always wanted to. We also got a hand rail for the stairs and the trim on the insides is starting to appear. Ive heard next, they might paint the walls. I would have thought it would have been easier to paint the walls first before the cabinets showed up, but I guess thats why I do computer dork stuff and not hands on stuff. It was also nice to see the back alley houses go up because they wont be too far behind so our alley wont be full of contractor trucks and banging too long after we move in. It seems like a bunch of us are going to be moving in from mid-February to the end of March. I think we should pal up and share some u-hauls. I also heard that they will start the garden court landscaping next week and should take 60 days to finish. Well soon be able to let loose the offspring without having to worry about possible tetanus shots. We spent last Sunday afternoon hanging in the court playing with robotic flying Christmas presents. In the two hours we were there, we saw every Muskin side neighbor, but alas, not one Saldana resident showed up. Well, I wanted to do a little more light-hearted topic this time verses the HOA thing I busted out last time. Next time, Im going to delve into 10 verses 7 non-fluff piece and the outcomes that might happen.

When something is unaffordable to 80-90% of a community, including many of us who are educated professionals, that's expensive. Period. I know plenty of families, including my own, who live in Crestview sized houses without - egads! - adding a second floor, btw. And when people were LIED to and strung along by the city and catellus for years, that's unfair. When people who have been part of this community for years are forced to leave just because "the market" says so, that's unfair. When PUBLIC LAND is used to build another community that excludes the middle class, that's unfair.

DING DING DING! Exactly! These homes are a bargain and thats the general feeling in the real estate community. Show me another new house with all the amenities of Mueller three miles from downtown that you can buy for $300,000. Downtown condos at the 360 Tower sold for nearly $400/sqf. The Austonian and W start at over $500/sqft. Older smaller houses with no amenities all over central Austin sell for much more a sqft. Mueller is a GREAT buy.

I'm still so confused about what basis people are using to determine what is expensive. Homes only blocks to the south of Mueller (in the neighborhood around Maplewood Elementary) are about $320 a square foot. In Crestview, the nearest affordable neighborhood north, homes are $293 a square foot. In both those neighborhoods, you're talking about paying those prices for two-bedroom cottages, and having to spend $150K to add a second floor, if you've got a family. No other "central" neighborhoods I know of have better prices. Mueller is not expensive. It may seem like a lot of money compared to what you could buy in Austin ten years ago, but for today's market, it's UNDERpriced. I realize that's cold comfort to people who can't buy in Mueller. In fact, it sucks. But there are a lot of places I want to live that I can't, because of rising prices. I can never move back to my hometown in California, for example -- the three bedroom ranch I grew up in is now priced at (is it even possible?) $1.3 million. One of the reasons that we're moving back to Austin is that in our fairly run-down, working-class neighborhood here in CT, a 2000 square foot home starts at $750K. And believe me, this isn't really a neighborhood you'd want to settle into. Sure, we could find a really cute house for $750K, that size, but in a much nice environment, another 15 miles north, but then my husband's train commute would be an hour and fifteen minutes each way -- not too great. And believe me, salaries here are *not* commensurate with cost of living. Not just housing -- EVERYTHING costs double (outside of food and gas, which I think are only about a 25% hike). It sucks -- all over the country, housing prices have continued to rise but salaries are just inching along. But no one is being "unfair", it's just the market.
