non residents after hours at the pool
posted by connie on June 10th, 2015 6:52 AM
What is interesting to me about all of this IS that something as simple as rules for the pool becomes a political and racial, class issue so quickly. I don't get it and I hope I never do. Most of my grandchildren are African American so go figure. Connie

non residents after hours at the pool

I also live across the street from the pool and understand the concerns people have about how I came to the conclusion about resident vs non resident. For the last week we have been watching in the evenings to see if any of the people that we suspect are non residents leave with a pool pass with them and I have not seen one person that seems to have one. Now, I guess they could all be people that keep theirs hidden well unlike most of the residents I see there with their keys. Also, my housemate has been observing how people are getting in for the last few weeks and sees an increase of the number of people waiting in the park outside the gate for the lifeguards to leave and then one person or two either walks in with a resident or they ask to be let in. It is uncomfortable to say no, feels bad. But, once one person gets in then they let in their freinds and family. As a business owner I am very aware of liability issues and would hate to see the evening swim ruined for all of us because of this. Either we need to pay to have the life guards there until 10 and we would be the ones paying for that or the resident only rule needs to be infourced. I can guarantee there will one really sad 10 year old fish named Lauren as well as her grandparents who will be very upset to lose our evening swim time! Connie
bike left at Ella Wooten Park unlocked

No it is an off road bike not a Schwinn and not as expensive as it looked. I left it out there all afternoon after noticing it when I was walking my dog in the late morning. I only brought it in when it was getting dark and I was worried that it would be stolen. My guess now is that it was stolen. Sorry it was not your Schwinn. Connie

I am starting to worry about that too. It is a very nice bike and I hate to leave it at the park where it will surely be stolen if left over night. I will go put a sign up in the morning where I found it. Any ideas of where else to post it? Connie

First I have no gain from this post but as a Nurse Practitioner that cares for many people who have high deductible plans or no insurance coverage I feel it is important to warn people about this place. It is a FREE STANDING EMERGENCY ROOM! As a free standing emergency room, not a minor ER you will be billed accordingly if you go in for simple things. That can be $1500 just to walk in the door that does not include seeing anyone or having anything done to you. So beware of going there when you just need a tetnus shot or an ear infection or some other concern that a minor ER or your primary care office would be a much better deal. They may say that they take your insurance. But, if you have a high deductible or if you have to pay the first amount of any ER visit that can add up very quickly. Connie Ryan

My 9 year old granddaughter and I need a helper! Our current helper has been with us for two years and is leaving for the summer. The hours needed are 10-15 hours a week and almost always be between 4-8 p.m. . Flexibility on times needed during that window is required. Occasional help on weekends is needed but not required. We need transportation from camps this summer with some early evening care, light housekeeping and dinner preparation. During the school year, transportation from her after-school program and help with homework is also required. A long term commitment is needed. This is the perfect job for a college or graduate student. If you are flexible, responsible, have reliable transportation, and want to be part of our family we would love to meet you. You can contact me by personal message. Connie

Incentives for Local, Women-owned businesses in Mueller?

I am the owner of Central Family Practice an integrative family practice that has been in Central Austin since 1998. Unfortunately I will most likely be relocating my business when my lease is up because they are going to tear down a perfectly good building in Central Austin and put up a new one. It would be so great to be able to walk to work! I am going to contact the people recommended. If other women owned businesses want to contact me maybe we could communicate as a group with the Catelus people to see what the options are and get more of their attention. Let me know if you are interested in that option. Connie Ryan
Chickens at Mueller
posted by connie on April 19th, 2013 8:22 AM
Don't worry I am not wondering about having chickens in my side yard but I am wondering if there is an area in the public areas that we could have a collective chicken hutch to give the kids in the neighborhood the chance to raise some and see the process as well as get some really fresh eggs. Anyone else thought of this? Ideas? Probably a nightmare but could be fun if there were enough people involved. Connie Ryan

Tired of crowds at Contigo? I recommend Joe's and Connie's
posted by dodger on February 11th, 2012 9:05 AM
I had a delicious meal and delightful dining experience yesterday at Joe's Place and Connie's Beer Garden on the corner of MLK and Comal. Joe and Connie have been in the catering biz for many years--catering to the likes of Jimmy Carter and Gorbachev at the LBJ Library. This is a mom and pop operation with Connie, Joe and their son, Vail, providing all the bar tending, serving, cooking, and cleaning, etc. The family bought the eclectic-looking eastside complex a few years ago for their catering business and have recently expanded it to include a small restaurant and bar. The large outdoor seating area in the beer garden is one of the best kept secrets in town. Beginning next month, the outdoor stage will be used for live music presentations. The small indoor space is decorated with Connie's doll collection, tables covered with colorful fabric, and chairs lined with Mexican blankets. All the signage, indoors and out, is appears to be handwritten, with a bit of a graffiti feel Don't let the shattered glass in the front door scare you, Vail did that when he was moving tables. Connie's going to paint the shattered spot into a chrysanthemum. The menu is fresh and changes with the season. Joe's Place and Connie's Beer Garden have a Facebook Page that Connie keeps current with menu changes. For example, last week, Joe bought some fresh beef and sliced his own steaks to feature chicken fried steak. Last night featured a winter salad with beets and potatoes along with roasted salmon. We tried the fish tacos ( a Friday regular) with lightly breaded and perfectly fried tilapia covered with homemade slaw. I recommend the homemade meatloaf with mashed potatoes and fresh haricots verts. All was served piping hot, perfect portions, fresh, and homemade--better than Hoover's. All their breads are homemade, as are the delicious desserts (try the lemon tart and ginger flan). There is a large selection of beers and a large enough selection of wines. We arrived during Happy Hour at 5:00 p.m. which offered $2.00 off regular wine and beer prices. There is a bar, of sorts, that looks a lot like our own kitchen bar--a mix of bottles on the top shelf behind the cash register. If you let Connie know in advance that you are coming, she will make sure there are fresh limes available for her famous margarita. Joe knows how to make martinis, says Connie, but you get the impression that fancy cocktails are NOT their thing! Check the hours yourself, but I think Joe's Place is open for lunch M-F, 11:00 - 2:00. It is open for dinner Friday and Saturday night, 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. If, like us, you prefer to dine on the east side of the highway, try Joe's. After two visits, it is now on the top of our list. And best of all, at least until the secret it out, there aren't hoards of diners waiting in cue for seats and service.

Those in attendance: Jennifer Harvey, Hon Chan, John Guest, Connie Ryan and Diane Gierisch. I. Jennifer’s Report a. Gate is malfunctioning and will be re-programmed on Friday, 9/2/11. b. Swipe card reader was shortened per resident request. c. We reviewed the pool rules and decided to leave them as they are. d. We discussed the umbrella/canopy issue. The committee recommended that we purchase 4 umbrellas to go into the seat wall supports rather than install more permanent shade options that primarily shade the walkway or limestone bench. e. Labor Day will be the last day for public swim. The pool will remain open for resident swim – no lifeguards on duty – through October. f. A survey will be posted at muelleraustinonline.com for residents to express their opinions about the pool and related issues. We discussed the questions to include. II. Maintenance logs: the time of maintenance workers visit was added to the log. The committee is satisfied with the maintenance work currently being performed at the pool. III. Lights in the south wall of the pool are still never on. The west pole lamp is off & on at sporadic times. IV. Next year we will request the lifeguards do hourly counts of pool attendance. V. It was requested that at the next meeting we discuss next season’s lifeguard & swim lesson contracts. We will also try to have the pool as an agenda item at a POA Let’s Talk meeting and an MNA meeting. VI. Mueller Pool Committee meeting minutes – July 14, 2011 Those in attendance: Jennifer Harvey, John Guest, Chris Stewart, Terese Plutko, Connie Ryan and Diane Gierisch. I. Jennifer’s report a. We are using a new electric company to supplement the one that makes night calls. b. The canopy installation is on hold & we’re back to trying to use the current umbrella supports – modified for new umbrellas. c. The pool key card reader is not easily moved or re-oriented so we discussed making color and/or housing modifications to make it more visible. II. We discussed lowering the unsupervised swimming age which currently is 15. (The city pools allow unsupervised swimmers as young as 10 after they’ve passed a swim test.) Chris is going to research how the city administers and enforces this policy and how we might adjust our age limit and put something similar in place. We discussed creating a pool survey for residents. Look for it at muelleraustinonline.com after the current movie survey. III. We reviewed the new locker policy. Approximately 15 lockers are reserved: a. Lockers are for registered resident use only. If you'd like to use a locker for longer than a single day, please contact Tammy Chappell with Alliance at MuellerCentral@Catellus.com. All requests should be sent via email with your name and address. Lockers can be used from April 1 – October 31, 2011. Twenty-four lockers are available first come - first served, you must provide your own lock, and the locker may be opened by a lifeguard or Mueller Community Associations’ representative at any time IV. We discussed assessing how much the pool is being used. We can count the times a resident pool key is swiped and we can add up the names from the sign-in sheets but that doesn’t give us a “number of people in the pool at any given time.” Jennifer will ask the lifeguards to begin recording that hourly data. V. There is not a good location to store the lifeguard chairs when they are not being used. Putting them in the entrance to the men’s locker/restroom prohibits easy access. They may begin leaving them in place but they are for lifeguard use only. VI. Next Meeting… August 11, 2011, 5 pm, Mueller Central Notes: · Maintenance/emergency contacts - § Message Board at Muelleraustinonline.com (http://muelleraustinonline.com/messageboard/index.php?) § phone Alliance Customer Service at 512-347-2888

Mueller Pool Committee meeting notes – May 23, 2011, 5 pm, Mueller Central Those in attendance: Jennifer Harvey, Terese Plutko, Hon Chan, Chris Stewart and Diane Gierisch. Absent: John Guest, Connie Ryan, Ben Kramer and Ezra Simeloff. Agenda Items RVi presented 4 shade canopy ideas. The committee wants to consider three of the ideas. Two of them are canopy structures of different designs (rectangular vs triangular) and 1 is a cafe umbrella idea (more sturdy & permanent than current umbrellas). More research must be done to know what is inside the seat wall (the dividing wall between the wading pool and the lap pool) because installation most likely will involve using that wall. Pool maintenance. • A leak in the pool pump was discovered and repaired. • A request had been made to provide online access to the chlorine levels, air & water temperatures online. It has been determined that, at this time, there is not an affordable way to do this. • The pool maintenance company is leaving a copy of the maintenance log after each visit at the front desk in Mueller Central. Anyone can stop by and take a look. Lifeguards begin duty at 1 pm on Saturday, May 28. This is the first day of public swim. The pool will be open on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. Signup for swim team and lessons at Ella Wooten Pool or Mueller Swim Team is at http://www.lifeguard4hire.com/swim-lessons/ and click on "Swim Lesson Registration" or "Mueller Development Swim Team Camp." *******We discussed improving communication with residents regarding pool events. Ella Wooten Pool Committee Notes - April 2011
posted by dianeg on April 19th, 2011 8:03 AM
Those in attendance: Jennifer Harvey, Terese Plutko, Connie Ryan, Hon Chan, Chris Stewart and Diane Gierisch. Absent: John Guest, Ben Kramer and Ezra Simeloff. Agenda Items 1. Pool maintenance. a. The pool maintenance company installed 2 new filters on Thursday, May 7. Since then the look of the water has improved. Wind blows pollen, dust and dirt from the surrounding park area, as well as from nearby construction sites into the pool. These particulates may make the water appear cloudy. The cloudiness of the water, however, is not an indication of unsafe swimming water. The chemical levels are in the proper ranges. We are striving to achieve a crystal clear pool in appearance but it’s proving to be a challenge. b. Small stones breaking off from the limestone deck are finding their way into the pool. We have instructed the pool maintenance company to be especially vigilant about removing them. c. The pool maintenance company will leave a copy of the maintenance log after each visit at the front desk in Mueller Central. Anyone can stop by and take a look. 2. Pool lights are still being worked on even though most are working properly. 3. Discussion followed on patching the pool sign to reflect new transition times. It was decided to table this idea for now, to spare the expense and time of going to the board. ***Reminder: 2011 Pool Hours & Schedule (Tuesday – Sunday): April 1 - May 27: Resident Swim: 5 am - 10 pm. May 28 - Sept 5: Resident Swim: 5 am - 12:30 pm; 7:15 pm - 10:00 pm. Open Swim: 1 pm - 7 pm. Sept 6 - October 31: Resident Swim: 5 am - 10 pm. 4. Solar power to heat the pool: Hon will investigate this possibility and report his findings. 5. Swim team will be coached by Lifeguard4Hire instructors. They are asked to open the team to young people up to age 18. 6. Request was made to make the water and air temperatures available online. Jennifer is looking into this. 7. The committee urged Jennifer to report to the board that we are concerned about the number of people using the pool already this season and to encourage them to seriously consider providing another pool or water feature for the community. 8. A plastic bin will be at the pool for lost and found items. This will be self-governed – supervised by Connie - until lifeguards begin. Announcements: • Next Meeting… May 12, 2011, 5 pm, Mueller Central. Pool Committee meeting notes – Feb 10, 2011
posted by dianeg on February 16th, 2011 1:22 PM
Reminder: Pool opens for resident swim April 1, 2011, at 5 am. Hours will be Tuesday through Sunday, 5 am – 10 pm. Those in attendance: Jennifer Harvey, John Guest, Terese Plutko, Chris Stewart, Connie Ryan and Diane Gierisch. Absent: Hon Chan, Ben Kramer and Ezra Simeloff. Thanks go to 3 residents who joined the advisory committee, Terese Plutko, Chris Stewart and Connie Ryan. Jennifer’s Report: • Picnic tables & benches are ordered and we expect delivery at the end of February. • Pool maintenance contract with Lifeguard4hire has been terminated. Contract with Easy Pool will begin March 1. EP is performing a full equipment check and pool cleaning this month. • G&R Electric is still working on the lights in the pool area. The pool underwater lights will be replaced when the water warms up. The lights in the walkway are still awaiting ballasts. Most (maybe all) of the deck lights should be on as should be the pole lights. The committee is checking on them in the evening. • Several of the committee members met with a shade canopy installer. This particular company was not working from a design perspective but strictly from an easy installation perspective. We decided that we would like to meet with RVi, a company that has been working in Mueller since the beginning and has an eye towards design. We will try to meet with them this month. New business: • A pre-opening walk-through of the pool area is scheduled for March 1 at 10 am. • We will continue our lifeguard contract with Lifeguard4hire for the current year. The committee is not aware of resident unhappiness with the lifeguard service and it is rather late to go out for bids for this season. We will re-visit the lifeguard service in the fall. • The committee discussed the 2011 pool schedule and transition times. We discussed changing the transition times from 12 noon – 1 pm to 12:30 pm -1 pm and from 7 – 7:30 pm to 7 – 7:15 pm. We are going to “sleep on it” and make a final decision next month. Troublemaker Studios Problem

MikeThank you for your response. I am sorry for my delayed response. I foolishly put this on the web site and then left for a vacation. In the future my recommendation to the coordinators of this is to have money on the premises to pay the person and not expect them to follow you to an ATM machine to be paid. It also seems prudent to ask for an ID from young women, who may be younger than 18. This situation had all the signs of a dangerous situation for a young, inexperienced, vulnerable, woman. I am glad that it is a legitimate artistic venture. I am sorry for any trouble my post caused but am not sorry I asked the question. Connie
Troublemaker Studios Problem

Below is an email I got from a friend who I trust not to be a "trouble maker". It is very concerning. Does anyone have connections over there to help check this out? If this is true, then we may have some things going on in our backyard that could be dangerous for young vulnerable women. Thanks to anyone who has more information than she has been able to get. Connie Hi Connie, I think there might be something illegitimate going on at Troublemaker Studios and wondered if you know any contact people over there since it is in your neck of the woods. An 18 year old friend of my niece is staying with me and she responded to an ad placed on Craig's list April 5th, under "Gigs" then "Talent" that said the following: Life Drawing Model needed for local film studio. male or female - all shapes and sizes. 2 hour evening sessions. email for more info. Location: central Austin it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests Compensation: 25-35 per hour PostingID: 1677508102 Here is what happened: She was told to show up at 4900 Old Manor Road on Wed night at 8 pm and ask for Chris Olivia at the gate. She did that and was let into a building by two men in their late 20's or 30's who told her that this was an "Art Class" they then asked her what she would be comfortable with in the way of modeling for them (just these two men) while they drew her - including asking her if she would be interested in disrobing altogether. She went down to her underwear!!! She struck different poses for 1 - 5 min while this Chris guy and one other guy did charcoal drawings. There were no other people in this "class." They did NOT ask her how old she was, to show them ID NOR to sign any type of disclaimer. At the end of the session they told her that they would have to go to an ATM machine to get money to pay her. THANKFULLY at this point, I was out in the parking lot and she DID NOT get in a car with them and drive off. The guy took off fast in his car, but I followed him and he pulled into a gas station and did pull out money to pay her - giving her $60 for 1 1/2 hours!!! I have since done some investigation on my own - that is NOT the going rate for legitimate art class modeling ($12 - $15/hour is), and this is the location of Troublemaker studios, and this guy, Chris Olivia actually works there. I asked the young lady I'm talking about why she thought this seemed safe to her and she said "because it was a business location!!!!" Connie, It was dark, it was remote, there was no one else out there- she was completely vulnerable. After this happened, I responded to that same craig's list ad as an interested young girl and got this follow up email from Chris Olivia: Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2010 11:14:54 -0700 From: maximusolivia@me.com To: prima0816@hotmail.com Subject: Re: Life Drawing Model needed hi julie! here is some more info... we are a local film studio (off 51st street) with a team of artists that do concept art and visual effects. the life drawing sessions are usually wednesday and friday from 8pm to 10pm and consist of anywhere from 3-8 artists attending with really cool lighting and a small stage. poses are anywhere from 30 sec. to 5 min. We try to vary the subject matter every week. sometimes costumes, sometimes nude, sometimes with props... so whatever you are comfortable with. you would just have to sign a non-disclosure agreement once you arrive at the studio. i can pay you $20 per hour for a total of $40 the first time and if you return for a second time then it can go up from there. If u are interested please send current pic. Thaanks! Chris I'm worried that this guy is using his work place to create an air of legitimacy that will fool young girls. I did call the police to tell them. They didn't seem very excited about it all since the young lady involved was actually 18. Have you heard any rumors about this kind of thing going on over there? Paul and Micheal Pickrell are great rheumatologists. Dr Loukas is a good hematologist. Theresa Pugh MD at Jefferson St. Family Practice is a good primary. These are people we regularly refer to at Central Family Practice. We would love to have you but we are a fee for service family practice, more set up for people with HSA's and high deductible insurance or no insurance. Good luck finding your new team and welcome to the neighborhood. Connie Ryan
New Cameron Road UT Shuttle stop?

I spoke to Connie at Cap Metro about the detoured CR bus running around the Dell center. She confirmed that the bus is rerouted southbound, but apparently it's not rerouted northbound (it doesn't visit the Mueller stops northbound). I'm going to try that Southbound bus tomorrow morning. I expect it'll be wonderful getting to UT, but I may have a bit of a walk coming back home, if Connie is right. I'll update you guys later on my findings. It's important that we voice our support for this new bus route, if we do in fact support it. To this end, Connie gave me the phone number for Robert Gonzales, who is apparently the route planning coordinator, so that I can let him know my thoughts and opinions. I'll be calling him tomorrow afternoon, after said thoughts and opinions are formulated. In the meantime -- Hey, I bet some other folks in Mueller might have thoughts and opinions, as well! Here you go! [:smirk:]Robert Gonzales 369-6039

I noticed them when walking the other night with some neighbors down the street from you. I vote yes, with the modifications you noted. The existing ones are really too much if they are close to your house. Connie

I live directly across from the pool. Even on the busiest days I cannot hear the pool noise. Even sitting out on my porch it is not very loud. The 9-10 crowd is not the noisy bunch anyway. The basketball players are more of a problem. Connie
