Applying for a Mueller Community Garden plot? Learn more about growing herbs.

Think about herbs if you are taking a plot in the Mueller Community Garden. Many herbs will flourish in our hot, dry summers. Others will be delighted with our not-too-cold winters. A number of Mueller gardeners grow enough sweet basil, parsley, dill, sage and other herbs to supply their own cooking needs, and even to make pesto. Not only can you eat herbs, if you let some of them flower, herbs are attractive to pollinators. Bees and other pollinators are essential to a healthy garden. Visit with two noted herb specialists from the Austin Herb Society on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. AFFORDABLE HOME owners are invited to attend an informational Tax Workshop on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 6:30PM at Wildflower Terrace on Berkman Drive at Tom Miller in Mueller. Catellus is hosting HomeBase, the Mueller Affordable Homes Program manager, and a representative of the Travis Central Appraisal District for a “how to” session for homeowners in the Mueller Affordable Homes Program who want to know how to protest their tax valuation with TCAD. As a reminder, don’t wait for the session to preserve your opportunity to protest. Homeowners with questions about their appraised or taxable value should: • Check their TCAD Notice of Appraised Value for the deadline to file a protest • File a written protest using the form on the back side of the statement by the specified deadline • Contact HomeBase, Ramon Valeriano at 512-476-8788 x115 or rvaleriano@homebasetexas.org to make him aware • Contact TCAD Representative, Paul Snyder at 512-834-9317 or psnyder@tcadcentral.org to work informally on a resolution
Future Bus Plans For Berkman Past Wildflower Terrace?
posted by L K on April 1st, 2015 1:54 PM
Added information --There are senior bus routes operating in Central, North East and South East Austin (Buses 490, 491, and 492) which transport people from senior communities three days a week during the late morning to early afternoon to grocery stores and shopping areas. It would be great to have this bus service for the residents of Wildflower Terrace and Franklin Gardens and perhaps other nearby senior communities. Although, they're directed at seniors, anyone can ride them, and they have been and are free. Also, those using them can easily transfer to a Cap Metro bus or Metro train, because they either share the same stops or are located nearby. There is an Access service available to senior citizens, but it costs $6 round trip. That's expensive for senior citizens on a budget. That's why I'm suggesting the expansion of senior bus services on the east side.

I'm not sure. I'd love to see it done though. You might want to lodge a suggestion over at https://capmetro.granicusideas.com/A proposal that might get through since it'd just be a slight lengthening of the route would be to expand the #37 so it enters/exits Mueller at Zach Scott instead of Aldrich and turns on to Berkman where it goes north to 51st Street.Although I'm sure once more development picks up on the Eastern side of Berkman like the current development in the southeast-central area near Wildflower it'll be more feasible.

Coyote Spotting
posted by Laura Lund on July 27th, 2014 10:55 PM
As was predicted, the coyotes are moving further in to the neighborhood. Tonight a coyote ran from the SW Greenway, West of Berkman, across Tom Miller and through that vacant field. The coyote that snatched a dog from Wildflower Terrace was dark in color, this one was siliver grey. Also, this is much earlier than previous spotting. If this bothers you, please call 311 and request that the coyotes be trapped and relocated. If we get enought requests, there may be some action. Thanks Neighbors

Window washing scratches

I hope this doesn't complicate the thread but birds were crashing into two big windows we have at Wildflower Terrace. That seems to have stopped now that the black sun screen on the inside is in the up position. The birds never scratched the glass but it was heart-breaking to hear them crash into it. Anybody have a good solution for this (other than leave the sun screen up)?

COYOTES
posted by Shauna Armstrong on April 21st, 2014 12:14 AM
Thank you for your kind words. There is a pack that has been living in the outer reaches of what was left of the old Mueller Airport parking lots and runway. That block of undeveloped land bordered by Manor Road and Berkman Drive. If sirens sound in the neighborhood or head east on Manor Road it will set the pack off and they will howl at the sirens just like the neighborhood dogs. The last time I heard the pack it was over at the golf course. I have come face to face with these coyotes three (3) times now. All three times in the same area, Vaughan Lane and Tom McCurdy Street, what we at the Wildflower Terrace call "Smoker's Corner". One evening I was playing Laser Tag with Brody, my male Cavalier Spaniel out on Vaughan Lane. After a few moments I looked over my shoulder and there was a full grown, dark colored coyote. Judging by his size I'm assuming this one was male. He was sitting up right, not down in a stalking, stealthy position but upright, just watching us from the corner of Vaughan and McCurdy, not more than ten feet back from the fence. Another night I was sitting on the corner with another tenant and Brody when I looked up and saw a larger coyote and two smaller ones. From this scenario I'm assuming a female and two pups. The pups were Brody's size. The female and one pup sat back about twenty feet but the other pup approached the fence and began running the fence with Brody! And this last time Quincy, Brody and I were walking along the grass median between Vaughan Street and the construction site. We were being stalked the whole time and I had no idea. It was a large dark colored coyote and he jumped the fence to grab Quincy. With all of the daily construction with heavy, earth moving equipment I foolishly thought the pack had moved on, as the last time I heard them they were over at the golf course. My advise is to avoid the area altogether. With the taking of Quincy they will be back.
Transportation Committee meeting notes 26 Feb 2014

Transportation Committee Meeting notes26 February 2014 (Jill)2012 Mobility bond project - money allocated and public/private partnership1st step - preliminary engineering report (how does plan fit with existing utilities, etc., construction cost estimates). Atkins has been hired to do this work over the next 6 months. Looking at I-35 to Berkman. There will be opportunities for public engagement... nothing specific yet. (Rick K - Windsor Park)Berkman intersection function - WB traffic on 51st is so heavy after road diet that the left turn from EB 51st onto Berkman has a hard time finding a gap for a permissive left turn.Pedestrian signal crossing 51st at Vaughn & Bartholomew Pool - Windsor Park would like active when pool opens. City developing criteria for pedestrian hybrid beacons. City recommended calling 311 which will trigger the start of the study process. (Catellus/City)-- Route recently published as recommended to City Council (maps, etc. online). More definition on northern route (Airport or I-35) is expected this Spring, along with mode (urban rail vs BRT) and funding options.-- More public outreach likely-- Route west of I-35 increases the need for good biking/walking connections across I-35. How is this planning being coordinated with Mobility35 and City’s support for that? Parties commenting on either project may want to note. If Mobility35 makes access to the northern route more difficult, that will negatively impact ridership. (Dee) - TxDOT’s long-range plan through Austin under development-- Cherrywood NA getting engaged quickly-- Mueller NA engaged-- TxDOT will present at RMMA PIAC March 11 meeting at Carver Library-- HDR hasn’t looked at the impacts to Mueller TIA yet. They’re waiting for TxDOT to evaluate prior comments and make possible adjustments. The risk of TxDOT getting too set on a design before the impacts to Mueller are known was debated. (Carl)-- Berkman full section from 51st to Philomena within 30 days-- Section 7 (southern part behind Wildflower Terrace) is under construction along with the 1st phase of the last detention pond. -- Catellus expects to finish southern lots by summer & turn over to builders-- Then Catellus will proceed northward up to Zach Scott, starting this summer. As part of that, they’ll complete the full section of Berkman from Manor to Zach Scott near the end of 2014.-- They’ll start on the next neighborhood park in Sept. with a goal of opening the 2nd pool in summer 2015-- Roundabout - Catellus is responding to final comments by City. City will construct but no information yet on their schedule.--Signal at Airport and Zach Scott:----- Flashing Yellow indication replaces old green ball to indicate the permissive turn phase (proceed with caution). Nationally, drivers often misinterpret the green ball and think they have the right of way when they don’t, so the standards have changed to use a flashing yellow turn arrow instead.----- When turning left into Mueller from southbound Airport, most drivers will travel past the crosswalk to see down Airport and determine if it’s safe to proceed. That will result in drivers getting caught in front of the crosswalk (or possibly on the crosswalk) when the light turns red. We discussed moving the crosswalk to the South side of intersection to avoid this conflict. I was told to call 311 so if anyone else thinks this would be an improvement, please also call them. It was pointed out that the City’s Complete Streets policy requires crosswalks on both sides of each street, not just one.-- Making the Mattie/McBee intersection a 4-way stop due to limited visibility for eastbound drivers on McBee to see southbound traffic on Mattie approach the intersection. Catellus says the problem is due to temporary grading that will be cut down when the NW corner is developed. The City said they would look into it but they seem reluctant to install a 4-way stop, even a temporary one. Call 311 to pursue.-- Sight distance at Zach Scott at Berkman - I mentioned this as well but we only had time for a brief discussion. It was pointed out that if we want wide-open sight distance at all intersections, you won’t have buildings near the corners and you would have to eliminate a lot of parking. Both are counter to our sort of development. It was also pointed out that the parked cars are a buffer, so stop prior to the crosswalk, if no pedestrians are coming, pull up to even with the parked cars and then look for traffic on Berkman. I’m just repeating what I heard so don’t shoot the messenger! If that doesn’t work, call 311.-- Berkman Dr. Traffic Study completed and will review with City and scope out options. Catellus says they will set up meeting with Berkman residents soon. Good turnout of residents will be important.-- Discussed whether the opening of the Thinkery necessitates the opening of the additional left turn lane from southbound Airport onto Aldrich. Over the holidays traffic backed up into the through lanes on Airport, but perhaps that was just due to the holidays. Catellus says they’ll monitor the intersection for backups. If you feel this is a problem, call 311. -- The City will be installing a new traffic signal on 51st at Mueller Blvd. in the next few weeks.

MNA Steering Committee Nominations are being accepted NOW
posted by dianeg on January 8th, 2014 3:33 PM
The Mueller Neighborhood Association (MNA) is accepting nominations for residents to serve on the 2014 Steering Committee. The steering committee has 13 members and helps to build neighborhood relations. Members are elected for one-year terms and may be re-elected, but they may serve no more than three consecutive terms. They must be Mueller residents and MNA members in good standing to serve. Residents may nominate themselves or someone else. To nominate someone for election to the Steering Committee, please email Diane Gierisch (diane.gierisch@gmail.com) or Dennis Mick (dennismick@gmail.com) by January 10 for your nominee’s name to be on the printed ballot. Nominees will be asked to submit a short ‘statement of interest’ that will be published on CitiCite and other neighborhood media. Nominations may also be made from the floor during the meeting, but those nominees will not have the benefit of advance publicity, including their statement of interest. This year’s election will take place at the MNA annual meeting Saturday, January 18th at 10am in the Wildflower Terrace Community Room. In order to vote you must be a resident and MNA member for at least two weeks prior to the election (by January 4). However, residents who paid MNA 2013 dues are eligible to vote upon paying 2014 dues at the meeting. Membership is available to any resident 18 years of age or older, and the fee is $5 per year. You may mail in the attached form, give it to a current Steering Committee member or bring it to the meeting on the 18th. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the roles of Steering Committee members or the MNA.

Wildflower House Concert "7:00 PM The Worthy Waites of Wimsey 8:00 PM Ben Livingston 9 PM Open Jam!" Date: Thursday, December 19th, 2013 Time: 7:00pm to 9:00pm Location: Wildflower Terrace Event Type: This is a Public Event Community: Mueller Community Hosted By: Anne Wright City/Town: Austin, Texas 78723 Description: The Worthy Waites of Whimsey brings the wonderful, rich, and varied ensemble repertoire of the Medieval and Renaissance periods to life before your very ears. Founders Jan Jackson and Wesley Norton performed together in Passing Measures, enjoying a long run at the Texas Renaissance Faire. The new group also features Gerry Priest, Tim Masters, and Jennifer van Gorkhom. Their period instruments include Bass Recorder, Viola da Gamba, Krumhorn and others. Their love of the music and playfulness comes through with an authentic rendering of “Early Music.” Ben Livingston is a south Texas native, National Endowment for the Arts Fellow and alien shapeshifter. His music personifies sheer joy. “He fits right in the row of specific Texas artists as Terry Allen, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely and the Legendary Stardust Cowboy. That means intellectual, opinionated, progressive, looking across borders and at times wacky.” ... John Gjaltema

Transportation Committee Meeting notes17 December 2013 (Dee) - TxDOT’s long-range plan through Austin under development-- Public outreach underway - get on their mailing list. Can sign up by section of interest and get e-blast updates-- Major work at intersections (51st, Airport) and ramp revisions-- Some proposals have major impacts to access to Mueller-- Access road changes (superstreet concept) -- Catellus and their engineers (HDR) met with TxDOT engineers to convey concerns-- Mueller residents also have a meeting set up with TxDOT to discuss their concerns (barrier to crossing I-35, loss of ramps to/from Airport, etc)-- Project Connect team - Council adopted Highland Mall corridor as recommended by the team. Alignment doesn’t come to Mueller but is at least on the East side. Exact route for 1st investment will be determined between now and May. Many public involvement meetings will be held - encourage everyone to get involved in routing conversations.-- City will continue to do planning work on other corridors so they’ll be prepared to take advantage of any funding opportunities that may materialize-- City also looking (with some encouragement from Mueller) at circulator service that would connect to urban rail-- Catellus can hold off on making any final decisions on the property earmarked for the maintenance facility for a while until routing decisions are made.-- Route west of I-35 increases the need for good biking/walking connections across I-35 (Carl)-- Finished northern 60 lots on west side of Berkman. Builders start in next 2 months-- Under construction Section 7, Phase 1 East of Wildflower Terrace. Phase 2 starts in a year and includes the full buildout of Berkman up to Zach Scott.-- In design on Section 9 (Zach Scott to Philomena) which will include full buildout of Berkman last stretch (late 2015 delivery)-- In design on SE greenway-- Next pool anticipated opening summer 2015 but could slip to 2016-- Residence Inn opening next couple of weeks-- Regional retail and market district finishing up (City of Austin)-- Signal at Airport/Zach Scott - soon but no firm date given by the City-- Signal warrants met at 51st and Mueller - no date for installation... will likely be some months-- Turns (no left out of driveway and no through from Wells Fargo to Home Depot) will be restricted at Barbara Jordan and Home Depot. Signal (privately funded) will go in later and then all movements will be restored.-- Roundabout - Plans at City for review. Comments to engineers by mid-January. No date set for construction. (Tom Wald)Cycle Track brochure - hand out at MNA and link online. Very nice production!Catellus will set up separate meeting with Berkman owners in mid-late January. Interim and ultimate solutions need to be discussed. Catellus recently collected speed/volume data which needs to be processed by their engineers. Possible short-term solution includes installing signs that show the actual speed above/below the speed limit. Berkman won’t be completed (both sides) until late 2015.

Is there a Mueller Community Center?

The one thing (one thing??) we are severely lacking in Mueller is meeting space! There are a few places the neighborhood association has been able to access (Ronald McDonald House, Wildflower Terrace), but I think they are only allowing us in for neighborhood-related events. You could look into the Hangar, but that's logistically kind of a nightmare. If you find any hidden gems, I'd love to hear! Good luck!
Any info on Bikram yoga place?

I used to take who I took my yoga from very seriously. But been a bit out of practice and hoping to be a bit more open-minded. Curious if anyone knows anything about the Bikram Yoga place opening at Wildflower Terrace? The site is sparse on info. Where is this studio from? Who is running it? Teaching it? Local folk? Any philosophy other than for sport?
