Coworking places
posted by Rahm McDaniel on September 3rd, 2013 2:57 PM
Hi Sameer, I've been a member and full-time coworker at Conjunctured and Capital Factory, and I've worked at Link a few times, too. Each of the places are well curated, dynamic communities with their own culture and personality. Conjunctured was the first real coworking place in Austin and is a thought leader in the space, with a very eclectic, creative community of people at its core. Capital Factory is very tech focused, has an incredible place downtown, and is rapidly becoming the center of Austin's early stage startup community. If I was still running a tiny startup and wanted to make connections and be exposed to innovative ideas and opportunities on a daily basis, it's where I would want to be, hands down. Link seems to attract professionals and sales people and does a great job of offering a flexible and professional work environment in the population center of the Austin MSA.

How to Eliminate Wasp Nest / who to call
posted by Sameer V on August 14th, 2012 12:04 PM
Hi Ranjana,Were you happy with the company you used for the wasp nest? If so, can you share their information? I have a couple: one in the front and one in the back. There's also a packed-mud-like nest in the front...I don't quite know what that is. Needless to say, all of that needs to be removed. Sameer

Anyone have an ethernet switch?
posted by Sameer V on February 29th, 2012 5:56 PM
Hi neighbors, how goes it? So I have a situation: my wireless router died (unexpectedly) and I've shipped it back to Cisco to get a new one. So, for now, I'm using a wired connection. But, I have a close friend visiting from Thailand and we can't both get online at the same time because we don't have a ethernet switch for more than one person to plug in their connection. Does anyone have one I can borrow/buy? We simply need just 2 ports, so it doesn't need to be anything fancy. Regards, Sameer

Mueller Fall CSA from Green Gate Farms
posted by schroed on January 13th, 2012 8:17 AM
Sameer,I highly recommend green gate farms. Not only are the veggies delicious and grown just east of here, but farmers Erin and Skip are awesome people and they do a lot for the community. Also, as a bonus, the pick up site here in Mueller is probably less than 200ft from your door. We typically do pick-ups on Saturday afternoons and distribute them from Dusty's porch.Daniel
Mueller Fall CSA from Green Gate Farms
posted by Sameer V on January 12th, 2012 12:42 PM
Hi Dusty (and others),I'm resurrecting this old thread. I'm interesting in joining a CSA for this year/season. Is Green Gate the recommended farm? How about Tecolote? Any others to consider? My needs are quite simple: I just want some fresh, naturally-grown veggies. It would be nice to have delivery but I'm not opposed to picking them up at a nearby location or a farm. I used Greenling a few years ago but they've sort of...declined in quality and quantity, if you will. And then I never signed up for anything else. Would love some input.Sameer
Door-to-door magazine sales
posted by Sameer V on November 8th, 2011 6:34 PM
Gang, So a young lady knocked on my door this evening. She said she was with a company called Entrepreneurs Sales and was doing door-to-door sales to work on her communication, professional skills, etc. She told me about her rough upbringing, health condition and 3-year old son. She used the term "inner city" a lot. I told her I'd do some research on them before I decide to give her any money. She said she will probably be back in the neighborhood tomorrow and will knock on my door again. So I did some research: 1. http://www.bbb.org/northernindiana/business-reviews/magazines-sold-door-to-door/entrepreneurs-sales-in-michigan-city-in-90058572 2. http://listofscams.blogspot.com/2010/01/door-to-door-magazine-sales-scams-tips.html Bottom line is that it's probably a scam. And the poor sales agent may be oblivious to it...or not. Please check facts before you part with your money. Sameer

Crossfit gym recommendations?
posted by Sameer V on October 25th, 2011 12:25 AM
Hi gang, I'm seriously considering joining a Crossfit gym. And I'd love some recommendations. Here's what's important to me: 1. Culture: a place where the coaches/owners are genuinely interested in providing value to clients. As opposed to simply increasing membership numbers so they can make more money (at the cost of quality/value). I've heard a story or two... 2. Good coaches: solid, qualified coaches. People that know and insist on good form. Basically, someone that thinks as opposed to just...doing. If you are a Crossfitter, please do share. Thanks. Sameer

Where to find
posted by Rahm McDaniel on September 26th, 2011 8:19 AM
This has been my experience as well Joe.Sameer, do you know what kind of borer insect problem you have? In my experience fungal and borer insect tree problems are a symptom of unhealthy, stressed trees and we have a lot of those right now. While chemical control may be required right now if the infestation is really severe, the best approach over the long haul to limit these issues is to strengthen the health of the tree with compost, mulch, limited competition, and the right amount of water. Here's a good blog post on the topic from a local arboristhttp://www.centraltexastreecare.com/2009/11/managing-wood-boring-insects.html
Where to find "fertilizer stakes with insecticide for borer insects"?
posted by Sameer V on September 24th, 2011 1:17 PM
Hi everyone. The sycamore tree in front of my house isn't very healthy at all, so I enlisted the help of a company called Real Green (http://www.realgreenlawns.com/). They sent a horticulturist who suggested I get fertilizer stakes with insecticide to control borer insects. The tree has been infested by these insects. He said the best way to address the borer insects problem would be to use something that the tree could absorb via the roots (as opposed to a topical/spray-on solution). The alternative to the stakes would be an insecticide that you mix with water and simply pour onto the soil. I've called about 6 nurseries in Austin but no one seems to carry a product I can use. Does anyone have suggestions on where I may be able to find something? Or have suggestions in general? Gracias! Sameer

Electrical equipment upgrade | costs, recommendations?
posted by Sameer V on September 12th, 2011 4:59 PM
Hey Joey, that's a very good question you're asking me there. Hmmm. I don't know the threshold at which I could do away with an upgrade. Or how the calculation on that works. Something I should ask Jeff Wolfe at Solar Community. By the way, the proposed system is a 6.48kW system. Also, you said you used a different PA. Does PA = panels? Are you saying you used different panels? And, if you don't mind me asking, what's the capacity of your electrical panel?Sameer
Electrical equipment upgrade | costs, recommendations?
posted by Sameer V on September 12th, 2011 10:55 AM
Hi neighbors. How goes it? Has anyone done any electrical equipment upgrades to their house? I'm referring to increasing the capacity of the electrical panel/box outside the house. I'm in talks with Solar Community for a solar system and they recommended I upgrade the electrical equipment from the existing "125 amp max with no main disconnect" to a "200 amp max with 150 amp disconnect." If you've done something like this I'd love to get some input on costs, and recommendations on electricians/companies that did the upgrade. Thanks. Sameer

Now entering month 20 of the Alliance/Time-Warner cable/internet billing nightmare
posted by schroed on August 16th, 2011 2:21 PM
Wow, I knew there were others in a similar position, but I had no idea it was this bad. Here's an update on my situation: Coincidentally or not, about 12 hours after I posted the rant that started this thread, I received an email from Jennifer Harvey saying that it had been resolved and that my balance would be zeroed-out. Then yesterday I received a message from their accounting department with a revised statement showing zero balance. Now, you might think this means my problem is resolved. I'd like to think it is. However, before I jump for joy, I must recall that (as my wife mentioned several posts back) our balance was zeroed-out about a year ago, only to come back in full a few months later. So it's kind of tough to know how long to wait before allowing ourselves to celebrate. Thanks to all of you who posted thoughtful comments and suggestions. I wish you luck in trying to get your situations resolved. The most successful strategy I've used was to make the whole situation as public as possible (the first time I did this was at a community update meeting, but the fix did not stick), and to CC people's bosses (as Sameer mentioned). I really tried not to go the lawyer route, but it sounds like there are enough of you remaining that it might be worth the trouble.I honestly can't say whether Alliance or Time Warner is more at fault. It is clear to me that "what we've got here is.. failure to communicate." But I stand by my original solution.

Unfortunately, we had tickets for this show at 8 pm, so we were gone for that. I look forward to other meetings/events/etc. And yes, I did find a fridge.Sameer

Hi there! I closed on a house on Scales last week and I'm moving in this weekend. I've been "tracking" Mueller since 2007 and I'm really excited about living in the neighborhood. And experiencing everything it has to offer. I'm also looking for a fridge. I've been combing through craigslist posts, but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on brands that tend to fare better than others. Also, does anyone have one for sale? I'm interested in a bottom-freezer. Sameer PS. Am I posting this in the right forum?
