My sister in Dallas has some friends -- a married couple, no kids, no pets -- wanting to live in Austin for 3 months. Does anyone have a furnished apt/condo/house that they would like to rent? Please contact me at RonGarza@hotmail.com">RonGarza@hotmail.com. (I've already told them about Craigslist sublets, Airbnb, and Executive Inns. Any other suggestions would be welcomed too). -- Ron

Request by a business for a waiver for alcohol sales near Reagan HS
posted by bpkramer on August 9th, 2012 9:48 AM
This comes from Oralia Garza de Cortes, a Windsor Park resident and longtime advocate for kids in Austin: There is an item on the Austin City Council Agenda that affects the safety, well-being and learning of the students of Reagan H.S. and the middle and elementary school students from that feeder pattern. The actual text of Item # 93 as listed on the City Council Draft agenda for August 16,2012 reads as follows: Conduct a public hearing and consider a resolution regarding a request by Speedy Shop Food Store #409, located at 6707 Cameron Rd., for a waiver from the distance requirement of City Code Section 4-9-4 which requires a minimum of 300 feet between a business that sells alcoholic beverages and a public school. It can be found on the City of Austin Web site under Council Meetings. Be sure to click on the item to get the supporting documents on the right hand side of the double screen. Items include a map of the proposed site to sell liquor, the letter from AISD, City Staff Recommendation ( they have recommended against the resolution) and a draft resolution ready to be signed. Yikess. Don't be intimidated by these documents, I know I was, at first glance. The web site address is: http://austin.siretechnologies.com/sirepub/mtgviewer.aspx?meetid=265&doctype=agenda ( Please note that the formal agenda for the council meeting will be released on Monday, so the item # is subject to change). Additionally, there is a website where you can write in to council members and all of them will receive the email at once. Please urge your constituents to write in as well. It is urgent that this be done ASAP. Time is of the essence. That web site is: http://www.austintexas.gov/government Sign-ups to speak at the City Council Meeting must be made in person and may be made as early as Monday August 13,2012 at 1:00 p.m. I urge you to sign in early, otherwise, we run the risk of being last. Also, please call Austin city council members and let them know that you explicity oppose any action taken by them that would make possible the selling of alcohol to minors within 300 ft. of a public school. If you can get the council person on the phone that would be great. But in all likelihood you may be speaking to a Council aide who will convey the mesage. Nonetheless, your phone call counts. If you need a sample script, I can provide one. If you have any additional suggestions, please feel free to email: garzacortes@gmail.com">oraliagarzacortes@gmail.com or by phone ( numbers are listed below). Community leaders representing the various NE organizations will gather at 6:30 p.m. at the Windsor Park Branch Library on Monday to further strategize on the issue. Please send a representative ( no more than 5 people) to this meeting so we can meet each other and work together on a plan for Thursday August 16th that includes prior phone calling, and getting commitments from folks to go to city hall for the hearing and council vote. City Council Hearing and Vote is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Thursday August 16,2012 at City Hall, located at 301 West 2nd Street. Again, subject to change- we will know official time on Monday. Parking is underneath City Hall-entrance on Cesar Chavez and Lavaca St. It is free on Thursdays, but parking must be validaded inside city hall. Thank you all for your concern and all your efforts. We can beat this if we work together for the good of our community and particularly the most vulnerable-our children.

posted by Cynthia on January 20th, 2010 7:15 AM
Get Growing & Keep Going (GGKG), a symposium that will provide teachers, administrators and parents with the tools to integrate gardens and nature areas into the school environment, will take place February 6th, 2010 from 8am-4pm at Gonzalo Garza Independence High School (located at 1600 Chicon St., Austin Texas, 78702). The symposium is themed "Greening Our Schools", and features keynote speaker Kevin Coyle, National Wildlife Federation Vice President of Education. Field experts will lead a variety of sectionals on topics including rainwater harvesting, vermiculture, double digging, schoolyard habitats, entomology, environmental stewardship, fundraising, and building a garden community. Teachers will receive seven continuing education credits (through Texas AgriLife Extension Service) for participating in this event. The GGKG symposium is organized by the Austin School Garden Network (ASGN), a partnership between organizations including Sustainable Food Center, Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Keep Austin Beautiful, National Wildlife Federation, and Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and Girls Inc of Greater Austin. ASGN's mission is "connecting Central Texas community resources to promote the social, nutritional, environmental, and academic benefits of school and youth gardening programs". ASGN also includes teachers, parents, community members and volunteers who participate in and support youth gardens. Registration costs $25 before January 15th and $30 until January 29th. Austin Open House - Comprehensive Strategic Mobility Plan

Austin residents to help chart city's future: City to launch Comprehensive; Strategic Mobility Plan The City of Austin will host residents of all ages Monday, Oct. 12, for an open house that launches two simultaneous efforts aimed at preparing for Austin’s future. Festivities including informational booths, interactive games and local music will serve as the kickoff for the City of Austin Comprehensive Plan -- a guide for the city’s growth and development over the next 10-, 20-, 25-years and beyond -- and the City’s Strategic Mobility Plan in which the public is asked to identify today’s greatest transportation challenges. The free events will be from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez St., Ballroom B, Level 1, near the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Trinity streets. Austin-based musicians Drew Smith; Suzanna Choffel; Sara Hickman; David Garza; and Ryan Harkrider, winner of the Austin Song Contest sponsored by the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, will perform beginning at 5 p.m. Younger children can draw maps of “their Austin” -- spots where they spend their time and identify with the city -- while teens can compete in a game of Austin trivia. Adults and their children can visit several booths to learn more about the city’s current demographics, projected growth patterns, how to participate in the comprehensive planning process, and current transportation plans and challenges. The Comprehensive Plan will eventually include elements addressing land use, traffic circulation and mass transit, solid waste, water, wastewater, environmental resources, open space, recreation, housing, public service and facilities, public buildings, health and human services, and commercial and industrial development and redevelopment, as well as others identified by the community. It would integrate regional planning efforts and existing city policies into a framework for shaping and managing growth. The Strategic Mobility Plan effort will include a mapping exercise to capture the traffic bottlenecks and mobility gaps in Austin. The public will be asked to identify gaps in the transportation system such as missing highway interchanges, left-hand turn lanes, trails or bicycle lanes, sidewalks, transit stops, car/vanpooling options and rail transit. The Comprehensive Planning and Transportation processes will include multiple ways of engaging the public, including the open house. The Comprehensive Plan will go beyond mere participation to encourage the general public and civic leaders to take ownership of the plans and help shape it. The Austin Tomorrow Comprehensive Plan, under which the City operates, was developed during the 1970s and adopted in 1979. It was updated with recent City policies in 2008. Developing the new comprehensive plan is expected to take two years. The next major step is the Community Forum Series of six meetings across the city, scheduled for the week of Nov. 9. The Strategic Mobility Plan will dovetail with these meetings. That plan is expected to be complete in a year.
