Monarch Migration Arrives in Mueller! Come See!
posted by Janelle Dozier on October 27th, 2016 8:26 AM
Monarch butterflies, as well as Queens, Gulf Fritillaries, Giant Swallowtails, and other butterflies and pollinators are thick in the Mueller Demonstration Garden (near Sahm and Tom Miller....look for the pollen grain sculpture). Bring your camera, as this is an amazing display. See Nancy Webber's photo taken this week attached to this post. The beds of Henry Duelberg salvia (spikes of purple flowers) and blue mistflower (powderpuff-looking pale blue flowers) are especially popular with the butterflies and pollinators. But, red Turk's cap is also attracting lots of attention. All of these plants are easy to grow in your own yard. There is also a bed of tropical milkweed in the Demonstration Garden. Although the Monarchs love tropical milkweed, it is not native to Central Texas. It will be cut back in early November, to encourage the Monarchs to continue their migration down to the Mexican highlands. Mueller will be planting native milkweed plants throughout the community as they become available from volunteer growers. The Mueller P.O.A. Landscape Committee selected the salvia, mistflower and milkweed to attract and help preserve butterflies and pollinators.

Volunteers Needed!

The Destination Imagination regional tournament will be Saturday, March 1 at Rouse High School in Leander. I am coordinating volunteers for the event. If you have a high school student who is in need of service hours for school clubs please send them my way! If you are 18 years or over we can also use folks willing to work as appraisers (judges) for the day. Appraiser training is provided. We feed our appraisers breakfast, lunch and snacks, fantastic t-shirts. Destination Imagination is a 21 century critical thinking program that supports STEM beautifully! We teach kids how to budget time and funds, team work and problem solve. Each year teams of grade level students choose one of seven different challenges that are based on technology, science, fine arts, improvisation, structure or service and create a solution that is presented at the regional level. Teams who rank first in their level and challenge advance to the state level. This year the Capital region as over 300 teams! Harvey Mudd University is currently offering full ride scholarships to kids who participate in DI! We have three teams of students in elementary and high school that are based here in Mueller! We hope to grow the program here. Volunteering this year is a great way to get introduced to the program. Let me know if you or someone you know can help!

Hi neighbors! The local non-profit SafePlace has approached me about being on a planning board for a walk that will be held in Mueller on February 22nd. I can't add anything more to my plate, but really wanted to get a Muellerite to help out. The heavy planning is done - they are just hoping to get some help with outreach to the neighborhood (get some walkers, raise awareness, etc.). If someone has some time to help out, please let me know. SafePlace is a fantastic organization, and I know we'll enjoy having their event here in Mueller! Thanks! http://www.safeplace.org

Doug tuned up my Townie bike a couple of weeks ago. He did a great job, and was even able to get to it the same day I asked. Doug helped me decide whether to keep it or sell it, and then advised me about how to market it. A friend tried the bike out for a few days, and took it to Doug to have it adjusted for her. She ended up buying the bike. Now, Doug is advising me on buying a second-hand bike that suits my needs.I really enjoyed working with Doug. I especially appreciated it that he was happy to work with someone who is not a fanatic cyclist, just someone who wants to roll over to HEB and the market. How cool is it to have a bike-smith here in Mueller! Thanks, Doug!Janelle

Plea to Mueller neighbors for clear sidewalks

I love Mueller!! With apologies to all, I enjoy the give and take. (Remember, the 10% are always with us - they keep things lively!) Being a responsible person (sometimes) and being the original poster for this thread, I offer the following: I have big garden shears, little and big loppers, and a small cordless pruning thing as well as time this summer. If you wish, send me a Private Message with your address; and I'll come clear your sidewalk (without touching any trees...)

Transportation Committee meeting notes

I've always been surprised that there weren't even more speeding problems on Berkman in Windsor Park. Hopefully it won't get worse when Berkman opens through Mueller. But the new HEB will attract more traffic. Ultimately, the situation will end up being reactive, rather than proactive as Rick described, if when traffic gets worse. I'd bet money that, sooner or later, there will be some kind of speed mitigation on Berkman in Mueller. There was a proposal a year or so ago, but the city will likely say it is premature until Berkman is built out on both sides.FULL DISCLOSURE: I live on Berkman Dr in Mueller!! I don't want Mueller to be cut off from surrounding neighborhoods -- if I wanted that, I could live in Round Rock (*shudder*). Austin drivers have proved themselves very adept at exploiting every available route to get where they need to go, and it often ends up disrupting neighborhoods.

I am a Mueller resident and a professional opera singer. I have years of teaching experience and a Bachelors and Masters degree in vocal performance. I teach privately at my home and would love to introduce singing technique to young budding musicians or even hone the skills of more mature voices. Please contact me for more information. I look forward to working with new music lovers!

Sorry for the confusion, Zhiqi! We use geolocation to determine whether a home is within our service area and, because parts of Mueller are so new, our mapping program is having trouble recognizing some of the addresses. We are doing our best to get to the bottom of it! For now, anyone who is being told that they are outside of our service area should email us at eastsidecompostpedallers@gmail.com and let us know! Thanks
