Getting Solar Panels (/Winter 2014)

Our builder (one of the new, smaller, local builders - hasn't built in Mueller before now) says they'll cooperate with anyone we choose for installation post-closing, which I assume means getting them whatever information they need about the roof and dimensions, but they say that they don't want anyone in their way while construction is going on and risk a delay in the final inspection. Is this normal? How much advantage is there to an installer getting in during construction rather than after?

Just to be clear, it wasn't me that got cooperation from the developer. At any rate, I'm not aware of special bike facilities planned for the east side of Berkman other than a continuation of the hike/bike trail through the extended perimeter green spaces.

Betsy, that's great that you have gotten cooperation from the developer for protected bike lanes on Berkman. Do you know if the developer is including protected bike lanes and bike roads for the newer development east of Berkman? It would be easier to plan for bike traffic in parallel with vehicle traffic rather than after the fact.Linda

Any interest in a Mueller community pre-school?
posted by Gwen Daverth on February 12th, 2014 10:50 AM
Hi, I'm a local mom of three little ones and have spent the last year wondering why such an active community doesn't have a community based preschool yet? Any one know the answer. Seems that the few childcare options in the area run at capacity and nothing is within walking. I would love to see a small development Montessori type school set up- run as a cooperative, non-profit. Would be great to set it up near the wildflower center and engage the community who lives there. Has anyone looked into this already or interested in discussing? Gwen

Hello, My name is Braden Pellowski. I am a 17 year old Mueller resident and an Eagle Scout. My friend, Marcus Cole (son of city councilwoman and pro-tem mayor Sheryl Cole) and I are starting a non-profit organization called 'Purify Our Planet'. We aim to combat the damage caused by improper disposal of household waste that contains chemicals that are hazardous to our environment. On Saturday October 12th from 11:30am to 1:00pm we will be collecting any of the following items at Ella Wooten Park: Cleaning Products Fertilizers Solvents Fluorescent bulbs Batteries (car and household) Cell phones Automotive fluids Oil filters Paint and thinners Pesticides and herbicides Photographic chemicals Mercury Aerosol cans Pool chemicals Cooking oil Outdoor grill propane cylinders Afterwards we will transport them via U-Haul to the City of Austin Household Hazardous Waste Facility. As a boy scout, an environmentalist, and a proud member of the community, I would greatly appreciate the community's cooperation in making this project a success. I would be thrilled to help Mueller maintain its reputation as one of the most eco-friendly and efficient neighborhoods in our country. Thank you for your consideration, Braden Pellowski and Marcus Cole
Security Awareness from APD
posted by Kimberly Chassay on August 12th, 2013 9:53 AM
Do you mind sharing what efforts APD and the community are engaging in to decrease crime within our community? Do we have anyone regularly patrolling our community or is it a reactive response after the crimes have been committed? We have been reminded repeatedly of what the homeowners should be doing. My family has taken great precaution not to tempt a theft to come steal from us, yet we have had one car stolen, another vandalized twice, Someone attempted to break into our home via our patio French doors at 2:00am while we were sleeping... and items have been stolen off of our front porch. I am disappointed that APD did not make it by my home on Tom Miller Street. I have lived in communities with larger crime rates and have never felt so preyed upon. There has to be some reasonable actions that we can do in cooperation with APD that serves as a greater deterrent.

Wanted to Rent: A band saw with miter
posted by bpkramer on July 21st, 2013 4:20 PM
For my "fun" summer project, I ordered a bunch of materials to make my own solar screens. I've been scouting around for a band saw with a miter to make my many cuts but before purchasing one and adding yet another item to an already jam-packed garage, I'm wondering if anyone has one they'd be willing to rent to me for a month or so. I think I saw something a while back about a Mueller Tool Cooperative. Did anything ever come of that?
Plea to Mueller neighbors for clear sidewalks
posted by JFunk Ster on June 18th, 2013 9:17 AM
I totally agree!! These vines are a nuance. No different than if someone jumped out from behind the bushes and started harassing me or my family while we were walking past their house. It's just common courtsy. Also, stopping by people's houses is a ridiculous suggestion. I don't know about everyne else but I go on walks to relax and spend some time thinking about my day. The idea of stopping at every other house and having a possible awkward conversation does not sound very fun at all.
Plea to Mueller neighbors for clear sidewalks
posted by L K on June 18th, 2013 7:46 AM
I have a friend, a former runner, now in a wheelchair from an accident, who likes to roll through the Mueller parks and surrounding neighborhoods. It would be difficult for him to knock on doors to encourage neighbors to trim their vegetation so he could roll his wheelchair down the sidewalk. Also, I wouldn't expect people wheeling babies or toddlers in strollers to stop and speak to every neighbor about the need to trim the vegetation overgrowing onto the sidewalk.I don't even know why I'm replying to this thread. If someone is breaking the law, then it should be reported and those who are uncooperative should be fined.

Space available in local nanny share
posted by Detra Price-Dennis on August 13th, 2012 5:35 PM
I belong to an amazing cooperative nanny share and we are currently in the final process of recruiting for our fall semester, beginning August 27th. Quick description: 2 wonderfully loving nannies care for no more than 5 children at a time. Children in the share range from newborn to 3 years old and families are able to take as many or as few days of the week as will meet their needs. The share is hosted at families' homes, and those locations are set at the beginning of the semester. This fall, our houses are all in central Austin - Mueller, Clarksville, Windsor Park. We started participating in the share last February and I can honestly say it's one of the best things that has happened to our lives as parents. Our kiddo LOVES going to see the nannies, giving us the confidence and freedom to do what we need to do, knowing she is so well taken care of. If you are interested, or know a family that may be, please PM off list and I can provide more information and/or arrange a visit.

Deeply concerned ...

As one of the people who advocated calling the police, I would like to explain why I said that. The posting said that children with no parents visible were throwing rocks at other children and tearing up landscaping. I was not there, so I did not see this. However, if anyone is threatening physical harm or destroying property (which we pay for, by the way), then I still hope that the police will be called, if the parents are not readily available or cooperative. I realize that Austin has a bad history of police vs minorities, going way back. I am hopeful that the current chief is changing things; however, prejudices and attitudes change slowly. This does not mean that we should not all take care of each other and each others' children by being vigilant and stopping negative behavior.

I have called 911 when I have seen inappropriate activity at the park (any park). When a parent is present, I have spoken to the parent. If the parent is not obvious or not cooperative, I call 911. Destruction of property and dangerous behavior is absolutely a 911 call, regardless of who the kids or parents are.
Chevy Volt
posted by Brewster McCracken on February 11th, 2012 2:05 PM
Hi everyone, Want to provide you with the latest info and clear up a few questions I saw in the posts.REBATE PROCESS STATUSPecan St is now in the 2nd month of the electric vehicle rebate process. We are doing 20 a month (we only did 5 the first month) because we want this to go smoothly, and we wanted to understand internally how the process with GM would work. There is actually a lot of staff work on our part for each transaction both in terms of the transaction itself as well as in setting up charge data management in the home and in our database on UT's supercomputers at TACC.VOLTS AND LEAFSWe unfortunately struck out in getting cooperation from Nissan. GM, on the other hand, holds biweekly technical calls with our team, their dealers are working with us actively, and in every respect Chevrolet has been incredibly helpful. Here is one example of why it's critical to have the engaged support of the car manufacturer: Through OnStar, we will be able to capture not only at-home grid consumption, but also pump consumption. We are also working with Austin Energy and their EV charging program to capture charging station consumption. We have a team of nearly a dozen researchers (the largest contingent being from UT) meeting every two weeks on this research trial. We won't get everything perfect, we know, but it won't be due to lack of work or lack of attention. Here is a second example: We are working with SunEdison, GM and the home energy management providers on approaches that will make it possible to charge your car through your rooftop solar panels. Here is a third: We anticipate being able to make at least one other exciting announcement in the coming months that is a direct result of the incredible cooperation and support we have been receiving from Chevrolet. One quick note on the amount of gas Volt owners use – virtually none. For my Volt, I did not use a single drop of gasoline all week. Last week, on three of five work days, I was on gasoline power for a total of seven miles. (Needless to say, I was pretty happy to have a gasoline back-up for those 7 miles.)240 V CHARGERSPecan St will be providing 240 V chargers at no cost to the resident for every resident who participates in this vehicle program. We are working with a few of the charger companies to find out who is willing to work with our research team.LEASE AND PURCHASE OPTIONS: Based on the strong interest we received from everyone, we are able to provide a $7,500 cash rebate (that matches the federal tax credit) for up to 20 purchasers, and we are able to provide a $3,000 rebate for 80 people who lease a Volt. Whether one buys or leases is clearly a matter of personal preference. I decided to lease my Volt (on my own dime – I am not receiving any Pecan St funds). I have always been someone who bought rather than leasing, but for the Volt I decided to lease because (1) lower monthly payment and (2) I figured there would be significant technology advances over the next three years in EV technology. I could be wrong; this was purely a guess with no inside information.SMART APPLIANCESWe are working with Whirlpool on their smart appliance roll-out. They have some pretty specific criteria, and they are also going through UL certification prior to beginning their deployments. We will know some time in the next few months the schedule when the smart appliance suites will become available. Once we do, we will come to the Mueller executive committee team and work with you.I'll be watching the posts in case you have any questions I missed. Also, we were planning to send everyone who signed up an update by email tomorrow evening, so be on the lookout for an email from Cate Smithson, our Research Programs Director. Finally, how do I like my Volt? I love it. It blows away my expectations, which were probably unrealistically high to begin with. Even my dad, who was pretty skeptical about the Volt (and who is a total car guy), loves it.You, the Mueller community, are emerging as the focus of international interest because of your level of electric vehicle and rooftop solar PV installations. The electric vehicle adoption you are part of will result in the greatest residential electric vehicle concentration in the United States - by far. Later this month, I am traveling to Fukushima at the request of the Japanese government to present to an international audience on what is happening at Mueller. They contacted us out of the blue with this request. You have also been the subject of profiles recently by BBC International and Time. This is your everyday life, but the eyes of the world are increasingly on you. What you are doing is a tremendous service to advance public interests much bigger than you may be aware of. Thank you for being part of this.Brewster
Imagine Austin extends priorities survey - Austin's Future
posted by danx111 on November 22nd, 2011 12:11 PM
Imagine Austin extends priorities survey The Imagine Austin Citizens Advisory Task Force has extended the Imagine Austin priorities survey to Dec. 15 for added community input. “We are calling this survey ‘Your Priorities. Your Voice,’” said Judge Margaret Cooper, who chairs the Imagine Austin Citizens Advisory Task Force. “We want to give all of Austin an opportunity to participate and give us feedback as we prepare the plan that will guide our great city for many years to come.” The Imagine Austin Prioritization Tool at http://www.ImagineAustin.net/lpriority summarizes the big-picture priorities laid out in the draft comprehensive plan for Austin’s future. Residents can designate which of these they consider top investment priorities. “We encourage citizens to learn about Imagine Austin in a way they are comfortable with,” Cooper said. “Residents can read the full draft plan if they wish, and we hope they will. However, if they don’t have time to read every page, we encourage taking the survey because it’s a very quick way to view the plan’s priorities, and the survey is interactive, so everyone can go deeper to read more details.” In addition to ranking programs, Austinites can suggest different priorities and join the discussion on SpeakUp Austin. Find the survey, full draft plan and other ways to get involved at http://www.ImagineAustin.net.

lasik? need some advice.

Hi Todd,I had LASIK on my eyes 10 years ago and appreciate it every day! No more contact or glasses or fumbling around or squinting (my eyes were pretty bad). Most recently I had cataract surgery out here (unrelated to the LASIK).I had an excellent experience with the doctors at Texan Eye on Balcones. They were friendly, extremely professional and their facilities were very modern (in that they had all the right gadgets and it was very well maintained).I say, go for it. Please give my best to Hannah and Cooper.Daniel

Weekly Paint Subcontractor-new garden court?
posted by dubaydavid on April 25th, 2011 6:55 PM
Does anyone know the company who Weekly used to paint the new garden court homes? Name, contact number? Anything you got with your warranty info? Here's the story: A friend of mine was over when they were painting and parked in front of the houses while they were painting. She was down the block a bit so didn't figure it would be a big problem--she was wrong. The problem is that Weekly is not being very cooperative about working with her or her insurance company. They've claimed that since she didn't have a license plate number or company that she can't prove it so they aren't going to pay. This is despite the fact that the painters covered her car with a drop cloth to 'protect it'. (Though I wonder if they didn't do that afterward it already got paint on it. While I get a company trying to protect itself from specious claims, her claim is legitimate and she has enough proof of that. Anything you can post or send me in a PM is appreciated-- Ann ps I'm doubly disappointed because when I had a similar issue with one of the lawn companies the builders were using (weed wacker knocked out the back window), they were great.
