City of Austin is hosting a series of free home composting classes
posted by danx111 on March 19th, 2014 7:19 PM
AUSTIN, TEXAS — For the fifth consecutive year, the City of Austin is hosting a series of free home composting classes to help residents reduce waste and create a nutrient-rich, soil-like material to cultivate beautiful lawns and gardens. More than 6,000 Austinites have taken a composting class since the program’s inception in 2010. The classes are part of Austin Resource Recovery’s Home Composting Rebate Program. The program encourages Austinites to attend a free composting class, downsize to a 24- or 32-gallon trash cart, and purchase a composting system for their homes. Austin Resource Recovery curbside customers who accomplish these three goals are eligible for a rebate of 75 percent off the cost of their new home composting system, up to $75. In addition to the rebate, selecting a smaller size trash cart can help residents save money on their utility bills. The smaller the trash cart, the less it costs. Classes take place throughout Austin at neighborhood library branches and farmers’ markets to make it easier for Austinites to attend. Founders Jan Jackson and Wesley Norton performed together in Passing Measures, enjoying a long run at the Texas Renaissance Faire. The new group also features Gerry Priest, Tim Masters, and Jennifer van Gorkhom. Their period instruments include Bass Recorder, Viola da Gamba, Krumhorn and others. Their love of the music and playfulness comes through with an authentic rendering of “Early Music.” Ben Livingston is a south Texas native, National Endowment for the Arts Fellow and alien shapeshifter. His music personifies sheer joy. “He fits right in the row of specific Texas artists as Terry Allen, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely and the Legendary Stardust Cowboy. That means intellectual, opinionated, progressive, looking across borders and at times wacky.” ... John Gjaltema

In fact, it's much closer to H-E-B than us. Imagine all the folks in the parking lot relentlessly clicking on their car remotes. [:surprise:]Wow, that Jammer company. Wow. I suppose it could be something like that. They advertise cheap products that would cause exactly what we experienced. Hope that's not the case here.
Concert tonight at Wildflower

Wildflower House Concert Date: Thursday, August 29th, 2013 Time: 7:00pm to 10:00pm Location: Wildflower Terrace Event Type: This is a Public Event Community: Mueller Community Hosted By: Anne Wright City/Town: Austin, Texas Description: 7 PM Byrd & Street 8 PM Judy Painter & Rose Kimball 9 PM Open Jam! Tommy Byrd and Kathy Street’s pasts includes working with Willie Nelson and Geenzinslaw Brothers, awards and notice from Texas Music Awards, The Kerrville Folk Festival, Folk DJ Chart, Texas Roots Chart, KPFT in Houston and Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul and Mary). For ten years they’ve been sharing the stage all over the southwest. With harmonies compared to the Everly Brothers, Kathy’s sweet pure voice is a perfect contrast to Tommy’s earthy soulful sound. Playing together since 1990, Rose Kimball and Judy Painter are musical storytellers. Through their original songs and a variety of obscure covers, they take their listeners with them through emotions of love, joy, & heartbreak and real life tales of triumph, loss and just plain fun. Rose plays guitar and bass and Judy plays guitar and mandolin. Both contribute vocally and their great harmonizing and vocal trading off is a mainstay to their sound.
Mueller Needs YOU to Speak Up (or Show Up) - 10-1 Redistricting Public Hearing
posted by James Nortey on August 12th, 2013 4:25 PM
The Independent Redistricting Commission (the group charged with drawing the City Council single-member district boundaries) will hold meetings in each County Precinct to solicit input for drawing maps. The first meeting is this Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 6:30 PM at the Millennium Center (1156 Hargrave, Austin, TX ). A number of us are concerned that the Commission may draw Mueller outside of East Austin and lump it in with North Central Austin (just like with the AISD district). This would be counter to Mueller’s goal of East Austin Revitalization. Some members of the MNA Steering Committee will show up to speak, but there is strength in numbers. Please come to represent Mueller's importance to the East Austin (you don't have to speak if you don't want to). You can find additional info here: texas.gov/news/commission-seeks-input-single-member-council-districts" rel="nofollow">http://www.austintexas.gov/news/commission-seeks-input-single-member-council-districts Also, don't forget that the Mueller Social Hour is also on Wednesday from 5 to 7 at @HEB. Our plan is to first go to the Social Hour HEB and then some of us will carpool over to hearing. Feel free to send me any thoughts or concerns. Thanks y'all. James
Electric/Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle Study with TTI - $75 compensation
posted by gregg on August 6th, 2013 4:57 PM
Howdy neighbors (particularly electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid owners), My employer, TTI is conducting an air quality research study that includes speed data measured from GPS devices in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Participants need to drive with a GPS (info is confidential) for 2 weeks, and will be compensated $75. There's no follow-up survey needed for this study. Contact my co-worker Nick Wood to sign up, preferably by Saturday, August 10th: Nick Wood Assistant Transportation Researcher Texas A&M Transportation Institute 505 E. Huntland Drive, Suite 455 Austin, TX 78752 nickwood@tamu.edu 512-467-0946 Here's more info from Nick: The Texas A&M Transportation Institute, a member of the Texas A&M University System, is seeking individuals to participate in a GPS survey to collect data from electric vehicles within the Austin region. This project is to assist the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in gathering information that will be used for their air quality models. We are only asking for participation from drivers of electric-only and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The GPS device will be placed in the vehicle for a period of two weeks, collecting information on position and speed for all trips. The devices are self-powered, small, easily securable, and do not require any interaction from the driver or any connection to the vehicle. Placement inside each vehicle should take less than a minute. Location data are confidential and will not be used to identify, in detail, where specific individuals have been. In other words, we are only looking at vehicle activity on different roadway types (e.g. freeway vs. street) and various zones of the region. Participants who complete our two-week survey will receive $75 for their assistance. An image of the GPS assembly is attached. Thanks, Nick Wood

City of Austin Hosts Spring Composting Classes
posted by danx11 on March 5th, 2013 6:23 PM
AUSTIN, TEXAS — This spring the City of Austin is hosting a series of free home composting classes to help residents reduce the amount of waste in their homes. In addition to waste reduction, composting creates a nutrient-rich soil like material which is great for cultivating beautiful lawns and gardens. The classes are part of Austin Resource Recovery’s Home Composting Rebate program. The program encourages Austinites to attend a free composting class, downsize to a 24 or 32-gallon trash cart and purchase a composting system for their home. To sign up to attend a class, visit the class-specific registration links below or austinrecycles.com.
