Top 5 Questions to Ask Your Fence or Deck Contractor
posted by Digital Zone on March 5th, 2021 10:19 AM
If you should be considering hiring a professional fence contractor or deck contractor, you will find few questions it is in addition crucial to ask before getting started. Here are the most effective five questions to ask your contractor: 1) Ask in case a deposit is required - Reputable fence builders and deck builders will never ask a person for a deposit to start work. A good contractor must have the financial ability to get materials at the start, and the confidence to provide the last project to be able to receive money for the work when completed. 2) Inquire about insurance and licenses - Hiring a "handyman" to build a fence or deck may cost a little less at the start, but there are several risks involved if they do not have the proper license or insurance. If somebody gets hurt during construction for instance, perhaps you are responsible via your homeowners insurance. austinsdeckcompany.com/">austin deck company Fence builders usually don't need to get building permits, but deck builders often do - so this may often be considered a problem for unlicensed deck contractors. Professional fence and deck contractors will always carry adequate insurance and the proper local business licenses. 3) Inquire about extra charges - Sometimes you'll receive an "estimate" from a fence company or a deck company instead of a "quotation ".Often times a company will add extra charges as you go along which could or may not be confirmed with the homeowner first. When you have already devoted to the project with a certain fence company or deck company, it may be harder to contest any extra charges across the way. Fence and deck projects generally have little or no cost changes as you go along, so be sure that you are getting a price "quotation" in writing that will represent the last bill for the project as described. 4) Ask your deck or fence builder if they choose screws or nails - Although most wood fence contractors and wood deck contractors nowadays are only using screws in their construction, some companies remain using nails! Using nails is faster than screwing, but of course it's pretty common knowledge nowadays that nails will fail much soon than screws in exactly the same applications. Proper fence builders and deck builder will never consider using nails. You'll need to ensure that you are hiring a business that is using only outdoor screws that are approved for use in the material being used (usually pressure treated lumber). 5) Inquire about a warranty - A reputable builder should provide a warranty on the workmanship of the finished project. The material warranty, if applicable must also be passed along to the homeowner and will change in terms and length. The labour warranty should really be at least couple of years allowing for full exposure to any or all four seasons a few times - this may expose any workmanship issues that would need to be addressed. Also consider that the warranty for work performed is just valuable if the company remains in business - a warranty from a tiny company is generally worth much less than a warranty from a respected larger company.
Building a Deck - Tips for Planning a New Custom Pool Deck
posted by Digital Zone on February 26th, 2021 5:37 AM
Have you given much considered to spicing up your backyard living space? Perhaps you are drawing a bare as it pertains to landscaping but when you've got a pool (or plans to put one in) then you have a unique opportunity to complete something really unique along with your outdoor space. A pool deck, whether it's an above ground pool deck or in ground pool deck, could be the perfect addition to your backyard and can act whilst the centerpiece for future plans and landscape designs. While above ground pool decks are often made primarily from wood, the in-ground counterparts could be made from a variety of materials including concrete, stone and specially-crafted pavers which can be designed only for pool decks. Once you choose your material for the pool deck you'll need to weigh in factors such as safety, durability, cost, water-displacement and maintenance. When you hop on a certain design for the pool deck, realize that not absolutely all deck projects are created equal. austinsdeckcompany.com/">professional deck company in austin tx There are always a few things you should look at first: Number 1; think about the overall utilization of space. While a style might look fantastic in that DIY magazine at the doc's office, it would actually take up so much oblong space in your backyard that you lose green area to your deck or patio. Settle on a deck design that makes sense for the pool and your property. Number two; Take into account the look and style of the pool deck that you want. When you have an architecturally retro home (like a classic Victorian) a very modern deck might not be the most effective fit. Do you need a natural stone look, an antiquated wooden style, a deeper wood, a multilevel deck with lighter woods to accent garden pots? Once you think about the style, consider the color, texture and pattern of the wood you decide on and what it will look like once it starts to age. Once you settle on a certain plan or a style, the absolute most challenging decision you're going to face is by using the materials. This is the number one struggle for all homeowners if they make use of a general contractor to build a pool deck system or they fight to build one on the own. Many home owners just aren't subjected to outdoor landscaping materials around indoor remodeling materials. Between the choice of wood and pavers, the questions of maintenance, the longevity, the total amount of materials - it can all ver quickly become overwhelming For homeowners working together with a general contractor, they can simplify the method by helping you matching designs with the layout of one's property and your home. Most of all, they'll help you will find a custom deck system which will increase the worth of your home - something that's difficult to do whenever you build a custom pool deck on your own. A well designed outdoor space or pool deck, whether above or below ground, can return its value to the homeowner once the property comes which makes it a sound investment every time. Whether you want a pool deck merely for the look and aesthetic appeal in your backyard or you would like something that gives more function (entertainment space, gardening across the pool, etc) there's a lot of versatility available, especially if you opt to produce a floating deck that's free from attachment from your home. Pool deck materials rise above just providing a hard surface to walk on. You can find textures, materials and patterns today that didn't exist twenty years ago, providing you a great opportunity to create your home stand right out of the others in your local market.

Should I be writing contract?
posted by Peter Finklea on June 13th, 2018 3:35 PM
Hey Martha, I use to rent a condo here in Austin for several years. Contracts are essential. It covers both parties. From my experience students may not be most respectful of your property, notifying you of repairs, or even letting you know how many people are actually living there. Since the house is out of state, I would recommend hiring a property manager to take care of finding new tenants, background checks, repairs, etc. They would ask a percentage of the rent as payment usually. They would be knowledgeable of current rental rates as well.Good luck.

Well it's EOM August 2017, two and a half years have past since my last related post. I was at the Mueller HEB today and there's a Google kiosk as you enter. Google Fiber 100 is available for $50/month. WHAT HAPPENED TO FREE OR A ONE-TIME FEE? I wasn't able to return to the Mueller area after a year in Spain. I ended up in NW Austin, where my Grande internet 100 mbps service has been at $50/month for almost 2 years. So it looks like even a reduced fee Google Fiber service was A LIE.

Are their any Mueller residents interested in learning about the Ancient Asian game of Go (also known as Weiqi or Baduk)? See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game) for an overview. In short, it is a two person strategy board game (think chess), with rules that are very simple to learn, but a complexity that draws you in for a lifetime of enjoyment. I have been playing this game for over 35 years and am also heavily involved with the Austin Go Club. My wife and I moved to Mueller relatively recently and if there are any players in Mueller or anybody (of any age) that would like to learn to play, I'd be happy to try and organize something. Update on 51st St. Vision plan
posted by Betsy on December 17th, 2014 7:39 PM
I attended a meeting at Catellus yesterday where they provided an update on progress toward the 51st St. vision developed a few years back. I'm including Windsor Park on this post, although WP had a couple of residents at the meeting and I hope they'll add to my notes below. Also, I had to leave a bit early so hopefully they'll fill in the gaps for me!The meeting was attended by representatives from UT Systems and UT Austin, Our Ladys Maronite Church, AISD PAC manager (Mark), Rick K, Cherrywood (Girard), Pam Hefner (City redev services - Mueller PM), CoA Transportation Dept (Dipti), Jim Adams, Janette Swensen (Windsor Park), Christine (City), Jill Fagan (City), Scott Smiley (Atkins - under contract with City to prepare preliminary engineering report), Jim Robertson (head of City’s urban design), Stafford Gunning - Windsor Park transportation committee chair), and Catellus (Dee D & Carl P)Update on where vision plan is heading…. They’ll also have separate meetings with key property owners along 51st (UT, churches, etc.)Jill Fagan is point person at City. Vision Plan highlights (Jim Adams):— Address the ‘seam’ between WP and Mueller— Started with council approval May 2012 (initiate effort)— Work group meetings Sept 2011 - April 2012. Approved in bond package Nov 2012 ($3.5M)— Looked at Manor Rd to I-35 but focus is west of Berkman— Original plan reserved 60’ of ROW on Mueller side for potential future rail— Vision is to create a ‘complete street’ (multimodal) on 51st and good access to cross between Windsor Park and Mueller— Urban character west of Berkman, more parkway feel east of Berkman (across from Barthomelew Park)— Remove urban reserve for rail between Berkman and Lancaster (no longer needed according to responsible agencies)— Focus on lowering speeds on 51st, support local businesses with on-street parking, improve pedestrian crossings— 60’ max building height on Mueller side as step-down to face Windsor Park.— West of Lancaster - maintain frontage road and trail that exist now. Introduce median on 51st.Preliminary Engineering report highlights (Scott Smiley):— Cameron to Lancaster - —— Adding protected bike lane (cycle track) on north side, —— change wide sidewalk on south side to shared sidewalk/bike path for 1-way bike travel eastbound —— 10.5’ lanes (tight for Cap Metro but they’re okay with it). —— TxDOT project at I-35 interchange is getting rid of westbound dedicated right turn lane from 51st onto Cameron to better accommodate bike lane.— Lancaster to Berkman - —— Adding 70 parking spaces (need to add accessible parking)—— Bulbouts at corners—— Eastbound bike path (asphalt) raised but separate from sidewalk—— Design at intersections needs careful attention—— Some rain gardens incorporated—— May need pedestrian crossing between intersections—— Some intersections (51st at Mueller) will be similar to Nick Falbo’s ‘protected intersections’I had to leave early but heard today that the project will significantly overrun the $3.5 million contained in the bond package. Utility adjustments will cost more than anticipated. Other sources of funding are being sought. First phase of renovation might be between Mueller and Berkman.

2 EXPERIENCE HENDRIX (Jimi Hendrix) Tickets Tues 9/30 MEZZANINE at Cost!!!
posted by Sandy on September 29th, 2014 11:25 AM
I have 2 tickets to the Experience Hendrix show at the Moody Theater on Tuesday September 30 in Mezzanine 3 Row D that I am selling at Cost. The original price on these was $106.25 per ticket from the box office. This is the Jimi Hendrix tribute show featuring a Supergroup of musicians. Those of you who went 2and a half years ago, know that this wil be one of the best shows to come through Austin this year. See Below for details. The Moody Theater is where Austin City Limits tapes their shows and the Mezzanine is a very special, small area, that sits just above the crowd with a really great view of the Stage. This is where the VIP boxes are. The details of the show are as follows: Experience Hendrix Celebrating the Music and Legacy of Jimi Hendrix The eighth edition of the celebrated Experience Hendrix Tour returns to Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater with special event performances that represent an ongoing tribute to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. The tour brings together a diverse group of musical greats paying homage to the abiding genius of Jimi Hendrix. This year’s line-up ranges from metal legend Zakk Wylde [Ozzy Osbourne/Black Label Society], blues icon Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Texas guitar gods Doyle Bramhall II and Eric Johnson, blues rocker Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, and Mato Nanji [Indigenous]. The rhythm section, as always, includes bassist Billy Cox, the only player, apart from Jimi Hendrix himself, who was part of both the Band of Gypsys and the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Chris Layton, the drummer who, along with the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, was a founder of Double Trouble. In terms of format, the tour offers multiple opportunities for performers and audiences to witness unique collaborations among the participating artists such as Buddy Guy with Jonny Lang, Zakk Wylde with Chris Layton and will highlight these artists and the others performing their favorite Hendrix signature songs including “Little Wing,” “Fire,” “Purple Haze,” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”. As has been the case with previous Experience Hendrix outings, special guests are expected to sit in at many of the dates, making the concerts all that much more memorable for both new and veteran Hendrix fans. Past special guests have included Paul Rodgers, Joe Satriani, Hubert Sumlin, Steve Vai, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph, Carlos Santana, Robby Krieger, and others. Doors: 6:30 PM · Show: 8:00 PM

Goodwill information
posted by Sol Acosta-Houston on September 5th, 2014 5:08 PM
It's good to hear both sides of the story. As a matter of fact, I'd already read online their justification for running their business the way they do (the 'rumors' started years ago and they continue to pop up as late as last week.) http://www.ndrn.org/en/media/ndrn-blog/523-labor-day-subminimum-wage-piece.htmlHowever, I am left with making a decision based on what representatives of the organization accused of wrongdoing say, versus what many other sources say. Based on many articles I've read online which provide different perspectives on the matter (financial, legal, humanitarian) my personal belief is that they are taking advantage of disabled people and therefore I'd rather give to an organization that has a crystal clear record. After all, there are many of those in Austin. Sure, when you just want to empty the garage nothing is as convenient as Goodwill (Any Baby Can and SafePlace might not accept clay pots or old umbrellas) but still, I'd rather take the time to find another means of disposing of my goods. This Forbes article said it best: "Goodwill’s practices may be entirely legal, but I can only imagine how demeaning it would feel to earn $3.99 an hour. Especially an organization like Goodwill, where the mission, as one of its statement says, is “to eliminate barriers to opportunity and help people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work,” should take a hard look at its budget and come up with the funds to pay all of its 117,000 workers at least the minimum wage. That’s part of helping people live up to their potential."

New Mueller Neighborhood Association Web Site
posted by Kevin Ludlow on July 7th, 2014 5:49 PM
Hi Henning. No, Mueller Community is not going to be discontinued. MuellerCommunity.com is alive and well and there is still development under way on it.While I am certainly all for change and progress, I am disappointed that there is an ongoing effort to eradicate one system while using that very system to promote something different.Additionally, I was told the other day by a member of the Neighborhood Association that there is no intention to replace MuellerCommunity.com. However, having visited the proposed site, it's confusing as to why a link to every mechanism of communication would be provided on there except for citiCite. So I do want to make a few official comments about this service. As many of you know, this website started in 2007 as a mechanism to share information about the Mueller Pioneer process. That process was confusing to many people and a number of issues had arisen with certain builders. I was under contract myself (on Sahm), but after seeing how David Weekly pulled a bait-and-switch on the property price and after seeing how a better Meritage home was $70,000 cheaper, I pulled out of that deal. The site however grew and I spent a great deal of time working with new residents.Since that genesis it grew to about 6,000 users and over 40,000 user-submitted posts. The server infrastructure costs about $5,200 per year and I've personally taken on that cost. The small advertisements on the side have paid back some of it, but far from all of it.Between 2008 and 2011 I participated in most MNA meetings, many steering committee meetings, and even served on the RMMA PIAC (Mueller Commission) as a city commissioner (often going door to door with flyers to get new residents into the conversation). And at present time am running a campaign for Texas State House in east Austin (of which Mueller falls into). So while I am all for new ideas coming into play, new competition, and an entirely open market, I find it disappointing that there is a current effort to discredit the last 7 years of this effort by simply pretending that this site does not exist. Furthermore, I would ask that those of you who have helped grow this online discussion and otherwise support these effort to reach out to the MNA and encourage them to at least provide a link to this forum on their new system.I am absolutely all for the residents of Mueller freely determining which system best suits them, but it seems rather surprising to undermine the efforts of a local entrepreneur and public servant in favor of 2 or 3 of the largest data-mining corporations in the world (Facebook being one of those operations).Thank you very much.Kevin Ludlow512-773-3968

Hosting Folks from Kazakhstan!
posted by Mark Barnett on May 20th, 2014 10:09 PM
The Center for Safe Energy of the Earth Island Institute in Berkeley, CA, is seeking host families in Austin for a delegation of visiting from Kazakhstan June 13-21, 2014, as part of the U.S. Congress's Open World Program (http://www.openworld.gov). The focus of the group's trip will be to learn about alternative energy and green businesses, as well as about American culture. Four Open World delegations have been home hosted in Mueller in the past few years – from Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Russia. – two environmental groups were hosted by the Center for Safe Energy, and two groups- 1 educational and 1 on media - by UT Austin's Slavic Studies department (both coordinated by the same program coordinator). Several of the past host families are again volunteering for this group, but we need a few more beds. We hope to have them all housed together in Mueller again, not only so they can be near each other, but also so they can get to know the warm and open community there that made the last delegations so special. The delegates have not been to the US before and are required to stay with host families in order to get a better sense of American life. Please note that several of the guests are allergic to dog and cat dander. The group of five delegates, their facilitator from Kazakhstan, and their interpreter will meet with local environmental groups and government representatives to learn how both work on environmental policy. We can work with host families' schedules and they can be involved as much or as little as they like. The delegates will be at meetings and cultural events throughout the day, returning to the homes often after dinner and/or evening events. We do like to plan a few dinners at each host's home to get hosts and delegates acquainted (interpretation provided as needed). There is also a final banquet on one of the last nights for all hosts and delegates. If you are interested in hosting or being involved, please email Tamara Kowalski at for more information. Hope to hear from you soon!

Window scratches
posted by Joseph Newman on May 6th, 2014 6:35 PM
Hi Lorrie,The rags I use are machine washed and dried before they touch any glass. Thus, there is no dirt on the rags when they are used. Furthermore glass is essentially the same hardness as sand, therefore it would take something harder than sand to scratch glass. Lastly, I raised this issue with another window cleaning company here in Austin which has been in business for 30 years. The owner told me that the stripwasher removes any dirt on the glass, so that when the rag is applied, the dirt has been washed off.I am perplexed about this because this is the first time I have heard of scratches on glass like that and I have personally serviced over 100 homes in Mueller alone. That all being said, I am sorry that you are having to replace your windows and go through all of this.Joseph

I, too, am so sorry to read of the horrible happening to your beautiful King Charles Spaniel, Shauna.Perhaps it would be good to remind everyone that Austin, and I believe Travis County as well, have a strict leash law. The only exception is in a designated Dog Park.I lived in Arizona for years. Have even taken daily jogs accompanied by a coyote or two. The danger there was from javelinas. Hungry javelinas. I'm sure that human expansion has so diminished wild animal territory that they are having to come in much closer to people and animals than they'd ever had to do before.
