Hi Michael,

Yes, we are. You read pretty widely, evidently!

I was fortunate to share the "World Technology Network" prize this year with one of my graduate students and a colleague from the Jefferson Laboratory. The story is here:

http://www.me.utexas.edu/

http://www.me.utexas.edu/news/2011/1111_ruoff_wta.php

Meryl, who is mentioned in that story, has recently built and tested a hybrid cell, where the anode is graphite-based (Li ion batter) and the cathode is ultracapacitor based (our new 'a-MEGO' carbon, reported on in our article in Science, at the link below). We have submitted that work to a journal and we think it holds great promise. Hybrid battery/ultracapacitor are meant to have more cycles then batteries and faster response times, but they cannot typically have as high an energy density as, say, the Li ion battery. However, we estimated that our hybrid cell might out-perform a lead acid battery on energy density (amount of electricity per weight or per volume, depending which metric is considered most important) and if it were getting, say, 20,000 cycles, one could use it in cars and never need to change the battery. It might line up well with electric vehicles.

This is UT Austin research, so translation to technology is a different challenge.

http://bucky-central.me.utexas.edu/RuoffsPDFs/257

257. Zhu, Yanwu; Murali, Shanthi; Stoller, Meryl D.; Ganesh, K. J.; Cai, Weiwei; Ferreira, Paulo J.; Pirkle, Adam; Wallance, Robert M.; Cychosz, Katie A.; Thommes, Matthias; Su, Dong; Stach, Eric A.; Ruoff, Rodney S. Carbon-Based Supercapacitors Produced by Activation of Graphene. Science (2011), 332, 1537-1541.

Thanks for asking. I am fairly new to this area of research, so it has been a real rush since 2008 when we published our first article on ultracapacitors (synonymous with 'supercapacitors'). We have at UT Austin what many consider to be the "Father of the Li Ion Battery", Professor John Goodenough, and other talented researchers whose focus is batteries. I entered into electrical energy storage, in ultracapacitors. Now with the hybrid, we are branching out a bit.

Rod, i believe i saw some major advancements being made in LiIon battery tech at some other universities using graphene. Are you involved with this at all?

Graphene Materials LLC that I founded has won two Small Business Innovation Research Grants (phase 1 efforts) for research and development related to scaling up graphene to ultimately allow for roll to roll processing of the material (and few layer graphene and ultrathin graphite), and then for a novel method of making a new type of graphite...that I can give about this level of detail on.

Phase 1 efforts are ~150K each. If things go well, then phase 2 can be roughly in the 1M range.

Just noting for now. Might need to be hiring down the line in various areas, and also contracting out some specific tasks...now is quite early stage. In short, a head's up to the b-folks in the community.

Good morning, I want to thank all the supporters of Pacos Tacos living in the Mueller development. We have met so many great people. Alan and I have been working hard to make Pacos a fun, relaxing place to hang out. On Saturday, 10/23, we will have free beer. We also installed a television and it is getting hooked up today, so if all goes well we will be watching the UT game tomorrow. Stop by for lunch and a beer. thanks again Margaret and Alan

Hello Mueller.

My name is Ian Carmichael and I am with Envoy Mortgage. While I don't live in Mueller I have been blessed to help many people obtain mortgage financing that began after doing a refinance presentation in July 2010. There is definitely a sense of "community" in Mueller and I count myself lucky to help those people within the community and made me feel like part of the community.

My contact info is 512-306-8502 at the office and icarmichael@envoymtg.com and I would love the opportunity to just help people with my ever changing industry. Please let me know if I can help you!

Thanks Ian Carmichael

A head's up. Probably all of you already know of John Williams. Dusty might further educate us or perhaps any of you could further educate me, as I make no pretenses to understanding high finance.

http://www.sott.net/articles/show/207829-John-Williams-A-Hyper-Inflationary-Great-Depression-Is-Coming

I wonder whether Muellerites (Muellerians?) might benefit by putting their heads together on the issue of 'emergency supplies' so that our community would be reasonably well configured in case the sort of disruption that John Williams is outlining, comes to pass? It would seem (my reading of the above interview) that John Williams is seeing a breakdown as likely to occur relatively soon.

Prior to posting to the whole forum I thought to gather some opinions on this piece, first, from a sub-group of neighbors.

Do you happen to have the ability to turn a catchy phrase? I don't count that as one of my strengths.

I am hoping to find a possible name or set of names for a new company within the next week or so.

The aim of the company is to produce 'endless length', desired width, foils of graphene and also ultrathin graphite, foils that can be rolled/spooled by roll-to-roll processing methods and that will have exceptional properties.

Of principle interest is that if all goes well, the foils will be (by far) the strongest material, with strengths about 50 to 70 times that of high strength steels and, accounting for the lower density of graphite, with specific strengths about 200x that of high strength steels.

So, I am looking for a name that either

(a) captures 'ultrahigh strength', 'ultimate strength', or

(b) 'ultimate' in' properties, because the in-plane thermal conductivity of these foils will be about 7x that of copper at room temperature, and the electrical conductivity will be remarkably high as well.

Such foils when ultimately made could find use in structural applications (infrastructure, architectural engineering, transportation vehicles, etc), in thermal management (HVAC, heat spreaders, heat conduits), as mechanically compliant transparent conductive electrodes (when they are 1 to 2 nanometers thick and thus 80-90% optically transmitting, rather than opaque when thicker), in nanoelectronics, as electrical "wire", and in various devices such as pressure sensors and so on.

About 5 years ago I grabbed a bunch of domain names with the word 'graphene' contained in them, but it isn't always the best idea to have the name of one material (say, the starting point for a company) in the company's name, because things evolve to include other materials and so on.

I'd prefer at this stage to keep this to our group rather than more broadly seeking a name, in these formative stages of this enterprise--thanks.

Sorry for such a long post!

Mike,

Welcome to the neighborhood and to the Business Owners Group.

I co-founded Graphene Energy, Inc, and founded Nanode, Inc. I am in the process of starting another company related to the large scale production of graphene and ultrathin graphite, but my day (and night) job is as a faculty member at UT Austin.

Dear fellow business owners:

We (Akiko, Rod, Christopher(4.5 yrs), Adrian(0.5 yrs)) invite you to a party at our house on Dec. 19. We'll have wine, soda pop, beer, and "finger food." Show up any time you like between 2 and 6 pm, relax, chat, go outside for a bit if you want and (weather permitting) throw a football or frisbee, kick soccerball, fly kites, etc.

(Children of course (!) welcome, with appropriate parental guidance, and given the number of guests with children will probably offer the opportunity for a few parents to rotate in terms of watching a number of kids upstairs in the play room, as adults are downstairs...)

Also some friends from UT, other neighbors from Mueller, as well as others we know in Austin should be wandering over as well. All fun folk!

Best Regards,
Akiko and Rod
