For Sale: 1996 Schwinn Frontier GS, 17", Emerald Black w/Gripshift shifters and a 7spd drive train The quality of this bike is from an era when Schwinn bikes were sold in real bike shops. It has just been professionally overhauled and runs like new. Has new brake pads, wheel bearings, and saddle.

The rest of the bike is in fantastic condition (a few small scratches aside). This is a perfect bike for riding around with the kids on summer break or a new bike for a growing teen. It's a good size for approx 5'4" to 5'6" person. Asking $195.00, cash.

Again this year, Mueller is hosting a fun breakfast stop Friday morning, May 16 for Bike to Work Day. The station is named for beloved neighbor Michael F. Adams who helped many in the neighborhood get on their bikes for transportation and fun.

I hope you'll all stop by if you're out biking to work or school. Stop by between 7:00 - 9:30 a.m. for breakfast, beverages and to visit with other bike commuters. We'll be on the Lake Park corner of the roundabout. Windmill Bicycles will be there to provide mechanical support if needed.

Tell anyone you know biking through Mueller to swing by as well... should be a lot of fun! Citywide info at http://biketoworkaustin.org.

Hi Harry, Thanks for asking about the route - here's a url to a google map for that route.

https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=213085534304090258499.000461f3606bd7b4c2e92&msa=0

A typical ride would cover the lower "half" the route on the map - head down to Lake Austin Blvd, head over Scenic Dr. and return on Hancock to North Loop / 53rd street, then down to 51st to cross I-35 and make it back to the pool.

Cheers

I just signed on with the Austin High Mountain Bike Team for the 2013-2014 season. Austin High is one of several high schools that make up the Texas Mountain Bike League. Texas is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) which is a nation wide campaign to introduce the sport of mountain biking to high schools.

This time of the school year, each team is working toward recruiting sponsorships/bike parts/ gear for the up coming year. Today, I'm asking if anyone is interested in helping sponsor the Austin High Team or if you have mountain bike parts that you are not using and want to get rid of, drop me a line.

Thanks, Peter

Thanks Doug! Yeah, it's a summer time cold. Just enough of something to take the fun out of a ride...

I was asking because I use Map My Ride for rides for Elizabeth and her friends. Elizabeth has mentioned in the past that non MMR people can't use the maps w/o joining.

I haven't tried to look at a MMR map in a non-mmr member mode, so I was just wondering if that's the case.

I can draw up your maps with google maps. That's very accessible.

Hi Ellie,

You either have to break the chain and remove as many links to make it secure. Then reattach at the "middle link". But if the chain is extremely loose, you should replace it for safety reasons. I like Bicycle Sport Shop's mechanics, and Hill Able, the owner, is someone you should get to know, if you don't know him already.

Hey All,
Unfortunately my schedule will always be chaotic. I have listed a couple of rides that I plan on riding during the week. However, most of my cancer treatment is uncharted waters. I typically don't know how I will feel from week to week. I typically don't post rides anymore because I don't know how I will be feeling from day to day. So until I am NED I will have to post last minute rides. As always anyone is welcome to join my rides.

Regards,
Michael

I am interested in establishing a couple of regularly scheduled group rides during the week, and possibly Saturday. I can't make the Friday ride because I usually have to be in court.

And I often see "loop" rides posted on an ad hoc basis with little or no notice.

I would also like to expand the group by formally inviting Mosaic residents to joining the group.

I see solo road cyclist come out of the Mosaic all of the time, and I get comments from other residents that they would like a regularly scheduled group ride. These comments come from both men and women cyclists I have met here. We could have a meeting at the Mosaic club house to discuss, if that is necessary.

What does everyone think?

Again this year, Mueller is hosting a fun Bike to Work breakfast stop Friday morning. This year we're a HUB station for the City! We'll be there from 7:00 - 9:30 and are setting up on the Lake Park corner of the roundabout. We could probably use a volunteer or two to help us break stuff down at 9:30.

I hope you'll all stop by if you're out biking to work or school. Tell anyone you know biking through Mueller to swing by as well... should be a lot of fun! Citywide info at http://biketoworkaustin.org.

Monday, Wednesday laps. I haven't done these in a while but was looking to start them up tonight. Typically the way it works is we ride the Mueller little loop. This is a two mile loop. We do all right hand turns to cut down on crossing traffic. If you get to far behind you just take a shortcut and your back in the pack. This allows riders of different skills to ride together. Tonight we will be doing sprints. 6-9 sprints. We ride from 6pm -7pm. Anyway, if your interested meet me at Wooten Pool/park at 5:55pm.

Yes, there were [3] Coffee-teers this morning. Helen & Frosty Walker - and - me.

Dan was correct about the breakfast tacos - they are big and yummy!

Helen helped set the pace and route for our ride - the idea for this morning's ride was all about avoiding hills - which we met - more or less...

Good Times!

Hope you can join us.

A weekday group ride sounds nice, however, my week day schedules can be hard to predict / arrange.

I'd like to join you if I can.

To all you AARPish folk. Here is a ride I'm leading on Sunday the 14th. Come if you can.

Looking for a more seasoned ride when the fairways are booked? Join us on the Mid Century Ride. It's the new golf. This ride is for the AARP crowd, 50 years and over. We promise not to card you. It's a no drop, intermediate, coed ride that will cover 30-35 miles at a 15-18 mile average. The route will vary each week from hill country rollers to in-town hills. There will be regrouping stops so no rider will be left behind. If you looking for more distinguished company at a ride pace that won't redline your heart rate, meet at the shop at 9:15 and the ride will start at 9:30am. Bring a helmet, bike in good working condition, water and nutrition, and flat changing tools. Please no headphones.

The Mid Century Ride will be twice a month. Check our calendar for future dates.

Hope everyone had a nice Rosdale Ride. Here's my report: Hung on with the lead pack for the first 20 miles, then chased for another 10. We kept them in sight for quite a while and then they were gone. Regrouped with a few others at the Coupland store. On the climb up to the New Sweden church there was a crash and our group pretty much disbanded after that. At that point, we started encountering the shorter rides so just rode along in ones or two's the rest of the way in. Toughest ride I've done in a while. Wound up with a 19.7 mph avg., 61 miles.

For you mountain men, I will be leading a ride tomorrow,Saturday the 26th.

Come and ride the trails on the Mellow Mountain Ride. We will be riding the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Meet at the shop at 8:30am. The ride leaves at 9:00am. We will riding approx. 20 miles, lasting for 2.5-3 hours.

This is a coed ride is for intermediate riders. The Barton Creek Greenbelt is fairly technical and not for the novice riders. The trail is made up of creek crossings, hardpack trails, babyheads, and crazy climbs. Bring your mountain bike, helmet, nutritional needs to fuel up, supplies to fix a flat, and plenty of water(2-3 bottles or a 3l Camelbak is recommended). The last watering hole is at Barton Springs pool before entering the Greenbelt.

Any questions, contact peter@mellowjohnnys.com

Wondering if anyone has some extra rear bike lights that they'd like to sell for a few $$. I'm needing 2 more for my daughters' lil bikes. Don't need anything fancy, just some light for morning rides to school.

Tour de Fat is highly recommended for anyone who likes bikes, fun stuff, and beer. If my Bike Traffic Skills 101 course doesn't make this weekend, or even if it does, I will likely head down there. Saxon and I rode the parade last year. We actually caught the parade en route and rode back with hundreds to Fiesta Gardens. No costume required and lots of fun! Don't be shy. Then the festivities in the afternoon are also a blast. And then there's the beer...

BTW - I see New Belgium Brewing's "Tour De Fat" is going on this weekend. Here's a blurb from their event website:

"New Belgium Brewing’s cycling circus, Tour de Fat, is returning to town for one day on Saturday, October 20 at the West End of Fiesta Garden. Tour de Fat rookies and veterans alike are encouraged to grab a bike and join us for a whimsical day of entertainment and two-wheeled revelry, all while raising money for Austin Cycling Association and Austin Ridge Riders.

For those who haven’t experienced Tour de Fat, it is a thrilling rite of passage that includes an unparalleled costumed bicycle parade, New Belgium beer, eccentric entertainment, local food, unusual bike contests and much more."

Looks like fun! Elizabeth and I have seen it in years past. I hope to make it this year - prolly not for the costumed bike parade tho. Thoughts? Anyone?

Added this content to the Mueller Wiki Page:

I believe you have to be a http://www.MapMyRide.com subscriber to view the maps.

Little Mueller. Ridden in clockwise direction produces mostly right turns, and no danger of riding next to parked cars on Tom Miller.
http://www.mapmyride.com/workout/181540049

Big Mueller: Also best ridden in clockwise direction. I don't usually ride this route during rush hour due to the heavy traffic on 51st St.:

I like combining the 2 routes and alternate laps of Big and Little Mueller:

Great opportunity for free training!

City Cycling Classes at Local Universities
Free to the public
Register at : http://austincycling.org/classes/citycycling

Thanks to a Community Transformation Grant from the City of Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services department with preventative funds from the Affordable Health Care Act, the Austin Cycling Association will be presenting City Cycling classes at five local universities during the month of September. Registration for these classes is free and open to the public.

City Cycling is a three-hour program developed by League Cycling Instructors to
present basic information about riding in an urban setting. It includes techniques to
avoid crashes and enjoy using a bicycle for transportation. One of the basic tenets
of City Cycling is that cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of
vehicles. This course is compatible with the Texas Transportation Code and City of
Austin ordinances that apply to bicycle use.

Universities taking part in the grant program include Austin Community College, St.
Edwards University, and University of Texas at Austin.
All of the 3-hour classes will be held in September and will accommodate approximately 30 participants each. Participants do not need a bicycle for this class. Additional on-bike training in traffic situations will be provided for up to 60 students, also in September.

Preston Tyree, Education Director for Austin Cycling Association, said, “We are
excited about the opportunity provided by Austin/Travis County Health and Human
Services to reach out to students and explore things that make bicycles so useful.
This will be a fun class with lots of video clips and discussion. Cycling should be fun,
and can be an integral part of our daily lives.”

I just wanted to state once and for all that these rumors about my using performance-enhancing drugs for the Sunday Morning Cafe rides are false and for that matter ridiculous and ludicrous. I do NOT drink coffee prior to the ride but only at the cafe when I arrive there with the other riders, and am entirely innocent of eating sugary donuts for that matter as well (before the ride). I am tired of these rumors and was torn about whether to respond to them, but given that I have young boys who look up their dad, and not the least to mention those following my cycling career who have always believed in me, I felt it best to say my say and be done with it. And there it is.

Tonight's USA Pro Cycling Challenge viewing party at the Draught House is cancelled due to technical difficulties. We hope to do a similar event sometime soon! Sorry everyone!

I checked the tv listings and found that the race highlights are not on until 10 PM tonight so had gone back to the BSS to confirm things. That's when I saw the message above. And continuing my string of last-minute posts...tomorrow, 8:30 AM, Ella Wooten departure.

In this corner we have Joe's Bakery on E 7th, which has achieved a whopping 4.5 out of 5 stars on Yelp
http://www.joesbakery.com/

And in the other corner we have Cisco's on E 6th, which I think someone suggested last week. Although it has not acheived quite as high of a score on Yelp, it "has lines out the door."
http://www.yelp.com/biz/ciscos-restaurant-bakery-and-bar-austin
The people will decide tomorrow morning! The ride will be about 4 miles each way.

I already have something completely different planned for next weekend so I will try to post more than 9 hours before the ride!

Good turnout at the Rosedale Ride! I saw Doug (and son), Bobby, Bill did 65 miles with someone I don't know in celebration of his 63rd birthday (happy birthday!), and Mark and I braved the 1/10 mile visibility on Springdale Road for ~44 miles total.

Anyone interested in doing a coffee ride on Sunday? It looks like the weather is going to be perfect and I propose that we go to Hot Mamma's Cafe at 2401 E 6th St - 4 miles each way. I will be bringing the kiddo in the trailer. 8:00 departure from Ella Wooten unless I hear an overriding preference for a different time.

Friday Sun Ride Rise...

Can't believe it's Thursday night already!

Anyhow let's have a 6:30-35 am meet-up in front of Wooten Pool on Pinckney Street for a 90 minute in-town ride.

As it's dark till 7:00 am or so, Lights, blinkies, reflective vests, and etc are needed.

Ridiing to the Rosedale ride sounds great! Must admit that the chances for the Mrs and Me to make it out are fair to partly cloudy...

Hope to meet up and ride out with you Saturday morning - Michael!

We'll ride in a clockwise direction on the neighborhood perimeter streets so if you arrive late, just ride counterclockwise to find us. Hope to see old and new neighbors.

Re: Riding - last saturday, did some slow roading on the mtb up 360, courtyard, jester, and adirondack while on Sunday it was more mtb on the trails around and around Bluff Creek ranch in Warda.

Would've put an invite out there, but didn't think anyone would be interested in the schedule or the pace of the riding.

Tomorrow? Am planning to do [at least part of] the Thursday Night Austin Social Ride that meets at the train stop on E 5th - 7:30 pm.

Any and all are welcome to join me. As I understand it, there's either a pub or a keg involved for those interested.

I saw two weeks back in a posting by Betsy, http://www.citicite.com/index.php?module=Forums&op=posts&ForumID=191&TopicID=4214&page=19#Post27675 , that citizen input for 51st included a request for cycle tracks. I am wondering what people know regarding the possibility of cycle tracks on Berkman Rd. the entire width of the neighborhood. Since when it opens it will most likely shift some of the traffic currently using Mueller Blvd to it and it was originally mapped out to potentially have rail, it will be quite a busy corridor. Regardless of what ultimately happens with the rail, I don't want to see it turn into a major car-commuter cut-through that feels unsafe for biking, which I believe definitely could happen without proper planning. Having tracks on Berkman would make it much safer and encourage much more bicycle use to/from our future grocery and other stores that will be built in 2012-2013. I currenlty do 90% of my grocery shopping with my bike and trailer and I would love to see other families be able to explore this option and feel safe while doing it. I really want to avoid another Mueller Blvd where they say they are going to put in bike facilities at some point but then it takes years for it to actually happen. Mueller Blvd. is one of my least favorite roads to ride on in Austin. I think that it is very important that space is made for bikes and and these facilities are put in from the start. Even something as simple as putting a double row of hard plastic road reflectors between the car lane and bike space would go miles in my book for helping people safer. They have done this downtown at the train station and it cannot be that expensive. So, does anyone know what I can do to try to make tracks happen on Berkman?

FYI - update on Loop 360 proposed improvements and additional opportunities to communicate bicyclist needs in this corridor:

An Open House meeting for proposed improvements on Loop 360 (Capital of Texas Highway) was conducted the evening of November 1. During and after the meeting, Texas Department of Transportation ( TxDOT )received numerous comments and questions regarding the mechanics and the effectiveness of the proposals, the potential effects to neighborhoods and schools that are adjacent to Loop 360, and concerns for pedestrian and bicycle accommodations. In response to the concerns, TxDOT is planning to conduct additional public meetings.

For the sake of this project and the next set of meetings, the Loop 360 corridor has been subdivided into four sections. The first meeting will focus on the section of Loop 360 from south of Old Spicewood Springs Road to US 183 and is tentatively scheduled for January. Successive public meetings will be conducted for the remaining 3 sections as follows;

- From Westlake Drive to south of Old Spicewood Springs Road,

- From south of Scottish Woods Trail/Westbank Drive to Westlake Drive,

- From Loop 1 to south of Scottish Woods Trail.

Although there are no major intersections with the mainlanes of Loop 360 from Las Cimas Parkway to Westlake Drive, the area is included to have full coverage for the corridor.

The meetings will include presentations dealing with current and projected levels of congestion, a discussion of various alternatives considered to address congestion, explanations and illustrations of innovative-type intersections in operation, model animations for the improvements as currently proposed and plans for additional public involvement.

Both state and local elected officials will be invited to participate in these meetings.

We encourage you to submit any alternative concepts that you believe merit consideration to terry.mccoy@txdot.gov.

Thank you for your participation in the first public meeting and your interest in this project. We look forward to these additional opportunities to expand the dialogue on proposed enhancements for Loop 360.

Thought this group would be interested in this. I note that TxDOT is proposing 'innovative intersection improvements' to LP 360. Suggest the cycling community turn out to see what's proposed. I've seen some 'innovative' designs that work well for cars but not other modes. I can't attend due to a MNA Steering Committee meeting that same night.

Betsy

NOTICE OF OPEN HOUSE
On Tuesday, November 1, 2011, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will conduct an open house to present options for proposed intersection improvements along State Loop (SL) 360 from United States (US) 183 to US 290 in Travis County, Texas and to solicit public comment. The proposed project would include the consideration of innovative intersection improvements at the majority of the existing intersections along SL 360. It is anticipated that the proposed project would not require the acquisition of new right-of-way or easements, and therefore, no residences or businesses would be displaced. However, the improvements are still in the conceptual phase.

The purpose of the proposed project is to improve operational efficiency and relieve congestion and delays at the majority of the existing intersections and along the corridor. The open house will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Westlake High School, 4100 Westbank Drive, Austin, Texas. During the open house, displays, including proposed intersection improvement design options and other project information, will be available for viewing. A presentation will not be given during the open house; however, members of the project team will be available to answer questions. All interested citizens are invited to attend this open house and to provide input. Verbal and written comments may be presented at the open house or written comments may be submitted via regular postal mail. To be included in the official record of the open house, written comments not submitted at the open house must be received by Monday, November 14, 2011. Written comments should be mailed to: Environmental Coordinator, Texas Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 15426, Austin, TX 78761-5426. Displays that will be shown at the open house are available for viewing prior to the open house at the Georgetown Area Office at 2727 S. Austin Ave., Georgetown, TX 78626 and at the South Travis Area Office at 9725 S. IH 35, Austin, TX 78744.

Persons who plan to attend the open house but have special communication or accommodation needs (such as language interpretation) may contact Monica Swenson by telephone at 512-832- 7181 at least two business days prior to the open house so that arrangements can be made to accommodate these needs.

Mark - somewhere in the Triangle, Flying Saucer or Kick Butt Coffee does booze i think. Or first stop could be at English pub a block or two west of Central Market - cant remember name off the top of my head. Another stop could be Spiderhouse Cafe just north of UT. Another stop could be Dive Bar (Mueller owned), which is on the north edge of downtown. Then of course there is the obligatory stop at a local joint - Cherrywood Coffee, Contigo, Paco's Taco's, or Nomad.

Any interest out there?

The idea is to meet up at the pool at Mueller this Friday after work and ride to 3 or 4 or more pubs to sample their wares. Then ride back to Mueller.

Lights, helmets and reflective clothing are a must.

Secondary meet up points along the route are welcome to help with logistics and timing.

Beer/Pub Aficionados please speak up so we can settle the route.

Obviously this is still in a formative stage.

That being said, if another date worthy of celebration is calling, we can work towards that.

Thoughts?

I have an idea for a fun happy hour adventure on Friday, 10/14, to Black Star Co-op (http://www.blackstar.coop).  Where the adventure comes in is a challenge to everyone to join me in not using a car.  My hope is that we can go to/from using only our bikes, feet, and the train.  The MLK train stop is 0.7 miles away with sidewalks the entire distance and the destination is conveniently located just steps from the Crestview MetroRail stop.  Train fare will be $2 roundtrip.  I am planning on leaving work a little early that day to catch the 3:55 northbound train (10-minute train trip to bar).  There is also a 4:30 train if you can't make the 3:55 one.  Then, we can all catch the 6:04 southbound train and be home well before dark.

If anyone wants to try out the hill route I've been perfecting for the last month, here's the main details. I usually ride it Mondays and Wednesdays, but I'm flexible.

38.5 miles round trip from Wooten
Includes these hills major and minor
Highland Hills Dr./Sierra
Lost Horizon
Bluegrass
Fire Oak
Yaupon
Rain Creek
Mt Bonnel from the north going up
Mt Bonnel from the south going up
Edgemont

It takes me about 3.5 hours so it's a long one, but it's a ton of fun.

Also I'm a big pussy about the cars thing so I've been refining the connecting pieces for weeks to eliminate as much traffic as possible.

Big thanks to Michael, Billy, and Lauren for showing me where all these hills were.

If I can score a kitchen pass I'll be down there for that. IIRC - there's a "free" breakfast involved somewhere during the event...

I'm sure a donation of some kind would be welcome.

BTW - Thanks for going out w/ us this morning.

Great fun!

I carried a letter for about a year in my bag from the toll road authority. Pretty much he said it is not illegal to ride on the toll road and their was no cost for bikes on the toll road. However, he would not recommend riding on the toll road. So I have riding on I-30 for four years now. I-45 sucks to ride on so I don't touch it.

smittyhoo et al - I've heard that a significant number of those contacted prefer to keep parking on both sides rather than including bike lanes with one side of parking. If other comments are not received, the road may be resurfaced as it exists today. The planners are seeking input beyond the immediate street; its users obviously include Mueller and other neighborhoods.

After the ride, contact your City transportation planners:

Cherrywood Rd (Manor Rd to 38 ½ St) is under consideration for adding bike lanes and restricting open parking on either side to one side.
Click here for the City's Cherrywood notification letter http://lobv.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/2011-06-14-Cherrywood-_Manor-to-38half_-Notification.pdf

Though the open house is past, Cherrywood Rd users should call or e-mail Neil Kopper with your thoughts: 974-7166, neil.kopper@ci.austin.tx.us.

Just checking on the Saturday ride. Would anyone like to join me for the Violet Crown Ride? What I typically do is split from the group at 973. The ride ends up being about 45 miles. I leave the pool at 7:15am. Back by 10:30am.

Michael, I signed up for your team on MapMyRide.com Like Pat says, kind of hard to figure out what's going on there. Something about logging your rides? Oh yeah, I signed on to Mapmyride several years ago anonomously as "Joe" (sorry to all the Joe's out there) so when you see Joe, its either me or a real Joe.

Michael, neighbors:

Missing the regular and leisurely Sunday morning rides. (I'll refrain from boring y'all with details about why this stress-relieving weekly event is so great for me personnally).

Hoping to have a nice turn out tomorrow. Not sure what to recommend...Mark and I did not make it to Hot Mama's Cafe last week, rather went to Cherrywood after talking with Dan and Tina about Veskimo cooling vests for the summer rider in Austin and such interesting things prior to disembarking from Mueller.

So, Hot Mama's could be a destination. I hope to have someone step forward and lead, and I will mindlessly follow and for good conversation at the cafe.

Back to manuscripts and proposals...

Best, Rod

FS: Yakima hitch rack
I've got a circa 2002 Yakima 3-bike rear rack with a type-2 hitch connection. It's missing the top rubber cushions over the plastic bike holder, but works fine. Selling 'cause our newer car lacks a hitch. E-mail (I don't check the DMs) to stop by to look at it or make an offer: gregpgriffin@gmail.com
