If you have a preschool-aged child, this is a great opportunity to learn about a program being implemented in our neighborhood elementary. We will also discuss how our kids benefit socially and academically from multi-lingualism.

We're interested but didn't see the notice for the meeting until today's forum digest.

We'd appreciate if someone who attended provided a summary, particularly the timeline for implementation.

Notes from Maplewood Dual Language Meeting 04.18.2011.

Celia Glick, AISD Director of Dual Language Programs and Claudia Santamaria Kramer, Supervisor of Parent Programs conducted the meeting.
First they announced that Maplewood will offer a Two-Way Dual Language curriculum beginning School Year 2011-2012.

The Two-Way Dual Language Program will be phased in each year until 2015-2016. The phase-in plan is:

2011-2012 Pre-K through First Grade
2012-2013 Pre-K through Second Grade
2013-2014 Pre-K through Third Grade
2014-2015 Pre-K through Fourth Grade
2015-2016 Pre-K through Fifth Grade
The Dual Language Advisory Committee will explore the possibility of expansion of the Dual Language program into sixth grade and secondary grade levels.

Maplewood's diversity is better suited for Two-Way Dual Language and studies indicate that Two-Way Dual Language is better for students as well.
Two-Way Dual Language supports "two language" groups of students to become bilingual, bicultural , and biliterate. For example, equal number of Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students would learn in both languages.

AISD is implementing the Gomez and Gomez Dual Language Enrichment Model
http://dlti.us/3.html

It is summarized here:
AISD Dual Language Instructional Model
The Dual Language Instructional Model will be implemented in both the One-Way and Two-Way Dual Language classrooms.

Reading and Language Arts
Pre-K, K and grade 1 - In native language only
Grades 2 through 5 - In both languages
Mathematics
Pre-K through grade 5 - In English
Science & Social Studies
Pre-K through grade 5 - in Spanish
The Maplewood school office has application forms and commitment letters.

Maplewood's Two-Way Dual Language program will be a campus only program and my understanding is that transfers into the program will not be accepted.
That may be why application forms are not available online.

Celia Glick and Claudia Santamaria Kramer distributed:
This brochure. http://archive.austinisd.org/academics/curriculum/dl/docs/DL_Brochure_10-11.pdf
This list of FAQ's. http://archive.austinisd.org/academics/curriculum/dl/docs/DL_FAQ.pdf

They presented a bilingual slide show that demonstrated the benefits of dual language instruction for all students and described how AISD is implementing Dual Language Instruction.
I haven't found the slideshow online, but it can be summarized here.
http://archive.austinisd.org/academics/curriculum/dl/

An academic research study can be downloaded from AISD's website, that illustrates many of the concepts Celia Glick discussed.

At the end of the meeting they recommended the documentary "Speaking in Tongues"
http://speakingintonguesfilm.info/
That concluded the meeting.

Now for some personal thoughts.

It is important that we applaud Principal Vickie Jacobson and all Maplewood's teachers for supporting the future Two-Way Dual Language Program.

Maplewood's bilingual teachers will receive specialized training in the Gomez and Gomez Dual Language Enrichment Model.

It is important to thank them for taking on this incredible endeavor of enriching our children's future.

Lastly, this is an excellent opportunity for parents to be involved in the school to make this program a success. Considering the district's budget shortfall, fundraising efforts at Maplewood for Dual Language instructional material is highly likely.

Sincerely,

martin barrera

Martin,

So, if I am reading the implementation timeline accurately, kids who are in 1st grade or older, will not be able to partake in the program, correct? This is really more for those who have a child in Pre-K/K this year or will be starting at Maplewood in the future, right?

Thanks,
Alicia

Alicia,

You read the implementation time line correctly. I've been contacted by several parents of children currently in 1st and 2nd grade that have expressed interest in the program. I'm going to try to keep tabs on who is interested and keep us all in contact with each other with the hopes that together we can create a richer bilingual experience campus wide at Maplewood even if a grade level isn't formally in the dual language program. Look for an e-mail off-line introducing you and other parents to each other.

Thanks,

Martin

Martin,
Do we need to apply for the DL program @ Maplewood even if it is our son's home school? He will be starting this Fall. I noted that transfers into Maplewood for DL will not be accepted. Does this mean, then, that the number of DL spots is limited @ Maplewood and/or will not simply include all incoming Kindergarteners?

Thanks so much for posting all this information.

Yes you will need to apply for the DL program @ Maplewood even though it is your son's home school.

An idea opportunity to apply for the DL program is the upcoming Kindergarten roundup on Tuesday, May 3, though you should feel free to go up to Maplewood and sign up in advance.

http://www.austinisd.org/articles/aisd-2011-2012-kindergarten-roundup-tuesday-may-3

There will be 3 kindergarten classes at Maplewood next year. One of those classes will be the Two-Way Dual Language class. Ideally it will be made up of an equal number of English Language Learners, and Spanish Language Learners, so yes, there are a limited number of spots. If there are more applicants than DL spots, there will be a lottery to select the DL participants.

English Language Learners who qualify by examination for bilingual services from AISD will automatically be placed in the DL program.

Sincerely,

Martin

We are planning to attend the roundup on the May 3rd. We were wondering if it was limited at Maplewood vs. Ridgetop where it is the entire grade-level w/the option for parents to opt-out. Still, we've been excited about Maplewood since we toured last year.
Thanks again for the information!
