Maplewood Tree Planting - This Friday and Saturday
by langhugh on March 23rd, 2011

For Maplewood families and anyone interested in providing natural shade at a school playground for generations to come...

http://www.citicite.com/mueller/index.php?module=Events&op=view&EventID=844

This is the weekend Maplewood has waiting for almost three years to come!

On Friday and Saturday, the Maplewood School Community will restore what the Great Hailstorm of 2008 took away from us…OUR TREES. As we enjoy the trees planted by our grandparents, let us plant the same trees for our grandchildren.

With a generous grant from City of Austin Urban Forest Grant funded by the Austin Community Foundation, we will be planting 5-6 Live Oaks, 4-5 Cedar Elms, and 2-3 Mountain Laurel around the play equipment and other western areas of the campus.

We are looking for able-bodied (and/or minded) volunteers to help us dig, plant, and celebrate this tremendous accomplishment. Here are your opportunities:

1. Digging - Friday, March 25th – 4:00pm to 7:00pm – Join us for some serious digging. We’ll have the holes marked and, under the leadership of Whitney Rasco, we’ll all be trained on digging only the finest holes to nurture our trees. We need plenty of “All Guts, No Glory” types for this effort.

2. Planting – Saturday, March 26th – 8:00am to 1:00pm – On Saturday morning, we’ll deliver the trees, carefully seat them in their new homes, back-fill the soil while we’re watering the roots. Then, we’ll pause, say a few words of hope and begin the caring for them.

3. Celebrating – Saturday, March 26th – Noon – Come out for a little work and a little Maplewood Community cookout as folks from Servant Church and Asbury UMC will reward our efforts with some grilled food and refreshments. The cookout should begin around noon. While there are a variety of events on Saturday morning, please join us when you can, even if it’s just to celebrate at the cookout.

I can dig.

By the way, has someone called the Texas one call number (811), so they mark the utility lines?

Daniel,

Thank you, sir!

We have, and OneCall suggested all the utilities would be marked by tomorrow night. We also have our own utility map of the campus, but it appears to be dated.

Currently we have about 12 for Friday and only 5 for Saturday with the broad variety of kids activities that go on Saturday mornings. We could definitely use folks on Saturday morning.

I encourage everyone to come out, even if its just for the cookout....even if your Maplewood Mustang has already graduated college...even if your future Maplewood Mustang is in diapers or maybe just a gleam in you eye.

Dusty

It was a stunningly beautiful evening digging holes with the Maplewood Family. It had the feeling of a barn-raising (not that we'd ever actually felt the actual barn-raising feeling). See you tomorrow at Maplewood for our tree-raising from 8:00am to noon, and the big cookout/picnic at Noon.
