Downtown Austin Plan
by Betsy on November 11th, 2010

I received the following that I wanted to share. I also created a forum for issues related to the greater Austin community but not specific to Mueller. Perhaps we can group similar items together here.

Dear Downtown Austin Plan Stakeholder:

After three years of work -- made possible by your help and input -- the Downtown Austin Plan is nearing completion. On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, we will present the proposed final Downtown Austin Plan (DAP) to the City Council at a special-called "work session." The work session will take place from 9:30 to noon in Room 1001 – Boards and Commissions Room at Austin City Hall, and will kick off the process for final review and approval of the DAP.

The Council work session will provide the City Council the opportunity to become more familiar with the Plan and to ask questions about it. This session will be an open meeting, but there will not be the opportunity for public input on this occasion nor will Council take action on the DAP. The work session will be broadcast live on Channel 6, and will be available for viewing on demand subsequent to the 17th. We will make the Downtown Austin Plan document available on the project website after the Council work session.

Several weeks after the Council work session, we will hold the final "Town Hall" meeting for the Downtown Plan, and we welcome your participation in that event. The purpose of the Town Hall meeting will be to summarize the major recommendations of the Plan and transition our collective efforts from "plan creation" to "plan implementation." We will contact you shortly with a date and information about the Town Hall.

Following the Town Hall -- beginning after the New Year -- we will conduct a series of briefings for various City boards and commissions. The board and commission briefings will culminate in a briefing and action by the Planning Commission. Following Planning Commission action, the Downtown Austin Plan will be taken to the City Council for a final briefing and then Plan adoption.

Stay tuned for further updates on the next steps. As always, you can stay informed about the Plan via the project website: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/downtown/downtownaustinplan.htm.

Imagine Austin - Deadline for survey responses extended through Dec. 10th
by Betsy on November 22nd, 2010

Fill out the survey at http://www.imagineaustin.net/ to provide your input on the future of Austin!

The Comprehensive Plan provides broad-level guidance on how Austin will grow and develop into the future. According to the City Charter, the Comprehensive Plan contains "the council's policies for growth, development and beautification of the land within the corporate limits and the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the city."

A Comprehensive Plan is:

A guide for the management of change
A reflection of community values and aspirations
The foundation for policies, strategies, and actions
The community's to-do list
A catalyst for community consensus

Please click-through to take this survey (20 minutes). This is an opportunity to emphasize to fellow Austinites that the Mueller model is working.

http://www.cityofaustin.org/compplan/survey.cfm

In the capital investment section, I went so far as to allocate 10% of the budget (among the options provided) to public-private development projects in the "Other" category.

Here were my supporting coments...
"The Mueller model works. Continue to develop projects like Mueller as Public-Private Partnerships with high community involvement. The cost and tedium on the front end produce better outcomes, present and future. Austin needs 5 more Muellers in the next 30 years."

If 20 or 30 of us submit something similar to that, it will become a bullet point for discussion on the Imagine Austin Task Force and City Council.
