Language Pack Requests?
by Kevin Ludlow on June 1st, 2009

I know this is a somewhat odd question (seeing as how you're already reading this post in English), but are there any specific alternative languages that people might be interested in having the site translated into?

Our new software version supports language packs and we're planning on having the site available in Spanish, French, and a few others before long (though not upon the initial upcoming release next weekend).

We we're thinking perhaps if someone had family members living with them that don't natively speak English, or something of the sort that we could prioritize a few other language packs.

I haven't looked, but perhaps there are statistics showing the second-language breakdown for the Austin area? That would be useful to know also.

Our only hope is to make the site accessible to as many people as possible (and language is a weak barrier for technology, IMHO).

Kevin,

How about a few test runs to get feedback on how good the translations are? That is, in our community we undoubtedly have folks fluent in, say, Spanish and also English, who could read the translation and see if it closely hues to the original, or is, e.g., a gross distortion of the original.

Before launching...

http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/demographics/tabular.htm http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/demographics/tabular.htm

There is a table with a listing of all languages spoken in Austin with household counts, but unfortunately I don't use Excel or Open Office on this machine, so the link is all I'm good for at the moment.

I think close to 25% speak Spanish at home, of which close to half speak English less than "very well".

Kevin,

I think I might have misunderstood...are you saying that all posts would be translated into n different languages (n being the number supported) or are you saying that the basic "skeleton" of the web site be in n different languages (such as when I am getting ready to post this message, there is "Post Response", "Show Preview", and "Hide Preview", and these would all be, say, on one version in French, in another in Arabic, in yet another in Spanish, etc.? That seems viable, I have seen that with other web sites where it worked well.

I might have leapt to the incorrect conclusion that you were talking about software that automatically translates messages from one language to another. Which could be very interesting as well, but I am then curious about whether the translations are any good.

Daniel, thanks for the link.

Rod, yes, I was referring to just the basic skeleton of the site. There's actually quite a bit more 'skeleton text' than you might think, but it would simply be nice for others to at least be able to navigate the site.

For example, in the new system (as has been demonstrated by some of the test users), people can create their own forums as well as manage them. I think it would be great for someone to create a Spanish-speaking forum, if that was their interest.

In the long haul, and very wishfully, the site would eventually translate all posted material - but you are correct in your mild disbelief; that is definitely tricky to do =] ...accurately anyways.

Kevin,

Thanks for clarifying, I should have realized that.

Sure, I give a big thumbs up. Why not? Could help me with my Spanish, which is pretty rusty, and my German, which is worse. Hoping for some good piropos chistosos, and an opportunity to post the text Mark Twain contributed about the German language.
