CCTV Support - Stop Mueller Crime?

I'm a little hesitant to even openly suggest this, but I have been noticing a number of recent posts talking about random petty theft, vandalism, strangers soliciting, loitering, and etc. I thought that if the community wanted to take an active response to this, the site may be of some service.

Though I have mixed personal feelings on public CCTVs (closed circuit cameras), I thoroughly enjoy using the technology for personal home security.

Wireless (and wired) IP cameras have been getting cheaper by the month and if people were interested in setting them up at their house, the website could be used to provide the live feeds (accessible either privately or publicly) throughout the day. Better still is that it would be trivial for us to store all of the images on the server. If something were to happen again, the videos could be turned over to authorities (and of course vigilantes with pitch forks).

The cameras are very simple and work just like any other wireless device. They can be mounted inside or outside but they do require protection from the elements and power. Once the camera is setup, the images can be directed to any computer in your house usually via some proprietary software. At that point we'd simply allow the photos to be sent to a special service on our end (with passwords and such) where the images (videos) would then be stored and rebroadcast. My guess is the total delay would only be a few seconds.

It would be trivial for us to have literally hundreds of feeds running at once with frame rates probably up to 3-5 FPS depending on the camera, computer, and internet connection (typical video is 30 FPS).

Anyway, there is no plan to implement something like this without someone first taking the initiative to setup their own camera. But, at that point we'd be more than happy to write some custom software extensions that would allow the images to broadcast on the site and to be turned on and off at the person's discretion.

I think it would be pretty cool to watch your front porch from your iPhone, but that's just me.

So what is the deal with the sign at the Zach Scott entry at Airport that says something like "This area is monitored"?

The model homes have security cameras. Perhaps the overly vague wording of the sign is intended to deter potential criminals elsewhere in the development as well, but clearly they've figured out that most areas are not monitored...

Kevin - that sounds like a good idea. Where do you buy the cameras? And would it be good to have a sign saying that the house is monitored or would they just steal the cameras?

Hey Lorrie,

The cameras I'm referring to are pretty widely available. I saw Fry's had a sale on them just a few weeks ago - can't remember how much but in the vicinity of $120-$150 maybe?

The ones designed to withstand the elements are actually pretty expensive (from $600-many $1000) and generally have stronger lenses and such.

Here's a bunch of different ones on Froogle http://www.google.com/products?q=IP camera&btnG=Search Products[/url.

In the interest of saving money, a regular indoor one would probably work just fine if it were mounted on the ceiling of your front porch. I could be wrong, but I think it would be difficult to steal. The ceilings are pretty high. The only caveat is that they require power - so you'd have to be clever. Done properly they can actually be very inconspicuous.

Alternatively it's just as easy to leave it inside facing out of a window. You'll get some glare from time to time, but not much in my experience.

If it's something that people really became more interested in I'd be happy to purchase one or two just to play around with them a bit more. Perhaps we could even find a local retailer willing to work a deal.

If you happen to pick one up and want to be the guinea pig in this experiment, just let me know and I'd be happy to stop by sometime and help you out.

Thanks for the info, Kevin! I will look into it and let you know.

In the meantime, does anyone have recommendations for home security companies? I have heard of ADT, ASG and Brinks but don't know if they're good or not.

Thanks for your help!

I have a type of CCTV camera recording to a network drive on the perimeter of my home. I can access it via and even do playbacks while I am away.

The nice thing is I can check and see if I left the garage door open, leave on the tv and see if guest are coming, or just do work upstairs on my laptop and leave the screen open to see who is at the front door.

When I am away I can look to see if there are any packages at the door or the camera has caught any movement where there shouldn't be.

Some have called me "crazy, but much like a home security alarm system it gives my family and I a sense of secuirty. There are also single wireless cameras that can be viewed from the internet by Panasonic that work well. It watches the from the inside and emails me when there is movement at my chosen location.

It is good for the family to know who has been by the house prior to coming home.

On a side note:
I have heard great reviews on http://www.NextAlarm.com
no contracts, pay month to month, and you can get text messages when different users arm and unarm house.

Well ... it happens that Fry's just put the "Airlink 101 SkyIPCam250W", or AIC-250W, on sale for $64.95.

These are wireless, for indoor use, and don't have any lighting, so they won't allow identifying a burglar's face at night.

Thanks for that little tidbit Henning.

Just for curiosity sake I purchased a Linksys WVC54GCA IP Camera from Fry's the other day for about $110.00.

I've got it mounted in my front window looking out the front. It's not bad. If you jack the frame rate up all of the way it will definitely consume some bandwidth on the local wireless network, but at the moment I have it set to just 1 FPS (which is actually plenty ample for basic home security).

The setup was a little tricky, but once I got it going it's run pretty smoothly. I'm likely going to setup a method so that it posts to the website just so that the proof of concept can be had.

Great minds think alike ...

I bought the Airlink camera today. I've got it mounted in my front window looking out the front. At the moment, I have it set to 1 FPS.

The airlink can upload its images via ftp or email, by the way.
