Incentives for Local, Women-owned businesses in Mueller?
by Romy Parzick on June 18th, 2013

Dear Neighbors: Can anyone share with me how I can get more information about what types of incentives/supports are being offered in Mueller to encourage locally- and minority/women-owned businesses to open in our neighborhood? I have hit several dead-ends as I seek this information for my business. I keep hearing that Mueller "wants" to support these types of businesses, but so far have no evidence of how it is being done.

Incentives for Local, Women-owned businesses in Mueller?

Hi Romy,

At every meeting that Catellus has had (Town Center town hall, POA Let's Talk, etc.), they have outlined what they are trying to do. They are also working with the City Small Business Office. The contact there is Pam Hefner, who has worked on Mueller for many years. They really are trying. The last time I talked to Dee at Catellus about this last week at the RMMA PIAC meeting (they give a developer's update just about every meeting), she said the rents were below market rate. I don't know what that means, but they want local/women/minority-owned businesses as much as we do. It looks good for them, and they have an obligation to make a best effort to get to 30% locally-owned businesses.

As for your business, who have you tried to reach out to? I would suggest Pam Hefner (pam.hefner@austintexas.gov) and Dee Desjardin (ddesjardin@catellus.com). If there is anything the Neighborhood Enhancement subcommittee can do to help, please let me know - the neighborhood association is trying to do their part as residents as well.

Kathy

I ran into the same dead end back in 2008 when I made calls to Catellus and Weitzman Group. I specifically asked them what unique type of incentives were offered to women and minority owned businesses. I was told that someone will get back to me and no one ever returned with an answer. I decided not to pursue opening a business here for other reasons. I probably tried for at least a month back in 2008 with countless calls without any answers.

That is very sad to hear. I think 2008 was a different time. There are more places that are being built and that are suited for more businesses. Again - I refer you guys to Pam and Dee. They should be able to help! AND, please let us (neighbors) know how we can help.

I am the owner of Central Family Practice an integrative family practice that has been in Central Austin since 1998. Unfortunately I will most likely be relocating my business when my lease is up because they are going to tear down a perfectly good building in Central Austin and put up a new one.
It would be so great to be able to walk to work!
I am going to contact the people recommended. If other women owned businesses want to contact me maybe we could communicate as a group with the Catelus people to see what the options are and get more of their attention. Let me know if you are interested in that option. Connie Ryan
