Constant noise in Standard Pacific Condo

My wife and I are in a condo on Simond Avenue and have noticed a heap load of noise coming from our neighbors. Especially when in our bedroom. I have spoken to them several times, but some of the noise is crazy that carries between the 'sound proof' walls - like a ping pong ball dropping on the floor.

Anyone else having noise issues like this?

What can we do about it?

I've already contacted Stan. Pac. and they said 'that they've put an extra sheet of drywall in and that's all they can do, and that there is a certain amount of carry through in multiple family home dwellings.'. But where I come from there should be a cinder-block firewall between the apartments (1 for noise, and 2 for safety).

So all in all. We're not too pleased with this aspect of the building.

Did they use normal drywall or soundproofing drywall? I'm no expert, but there are specialty products out there.

I think that second sheet of gypsum board is primarily to create a fire-rated partition between the units, not soundproofing. There ought to be some acoustic insulation within the wall as well.

We have a Stan Pac single family home and noise travels quite loudly from room to room and upstairs to downstairs. We've considered spray in insulation as a sound deadening measure, but haven't gone that far yet. When someone takes a shower in the hall bath, it sounds like they are tearing through the walls with their bare hands. Downstairs, it sounds like a tidal wave.
With both her door and our door closed, I can still hear my daughter cough and whimper in her room at night. I'm a light sleeper, unfortunately.

Sean, I'm curious to know which of the Mueller House condos you live in. The sound issues between units was a a major problem in the first few that were built on the South side of Simond, so much so that Stan Pac came back in and did some retro-fitting for all of the units. (In a nutshell, they applied some acoustical sound board to some adjoining walls and to the ceilings of the downstairs living spaces.) Most homeowners believe that it didn't really make a difference, but opinions about how bad the remaining sound issues are varies pretty wildly. Our understanding, however, was that Stan Pac made adjustments to their construction methods for the subsequent Mueller House buildings and that these buildings experience "normal" sound bleed for a multi-family dwelling. There's a lot of history here. If would like some more detail, feel free to send me a private message and we can sort out a time for conversation.

We live in a David Weekley row home, we're one of the middle units with neighbors on both sides of us, and we NEVER hear anything come through the walls. We've been here 4 years - not a sound.

Hopefully, they don't hear us either, but neither neighbor has kids, so there's that ...

I will echo that experience for the David Weekley row homes. I was prepared to accept some noise when I decided to move into a row home, but I'm been very impressed with sound isolation. I can hear an occasional sound from another room in my house, but very rare is the occasion where I can hear something from my neighbor.
