Ed,

Sorry about the mice. First question, I think, is the problem 'a' mouse or a couple of mice, as opposed to a larger infestation? If so, I'd try conventional mousetraps before I'd consider shelling out a couple of hundred to an exterminator. Some people prefer 'glue traps', which are at hardware stores (probably Home depot) and are very effective.

And btw, Austin, I once killed a rat in our previous home with a tennis racket. Maybe we should start a club (no pun intended).

Rat-killers of Mueller unite!

One other thing: be sure it's mice and not rats. Growing up in the midwest, I'd only had experience with mice...everything's bigger in Texas.

ABC checked it out and said it was a mouse. Said they would charge me $125 to set some traps, or would do a more extensive process for much more. They recommended the later. May just go borrow a cat for a few days........

I don't have the documents in front of me at the moment, but isn't pest control part of the service provided by Alliance for row houses (paid for in our HOA fees each month)? I seem to remember the builder talking about some sort of bug/critter prevention being included in with the HOA fees, like our insurance and landscaping. Might be worth looking into and pursuing further, especially if ABC thinks the mice are in several homes and not just one - it seems like that would fall under the purview of Alliance.

Thanks Meg, I will check with them. I did call DW Warranty division and they said that pests were not under the warranty. It does seem like a whole row house issue (there are five in my section).

My brother had a rat problem in Houston. He also has a small child and pets. He went with an electric trap and it was very effective. (Yep... it zaps the little guys. It's fast and you don't have to finish anyone off.)

Ed, did you get his resolved? What did you do? Where were the mice? Want to be aware so we can pay attention too! When did you move in? We moved in back in Jan. and have not seen anything, but was sooo surprised to see this being an issue!

Deeann,

I just had an unrelated David Weekly check up on my house and the builder was surprised to hear that there were mice in the house too. I showed him the droppings and he agreed they were indeed mice. We speculated that they may have gotten in during construction before the house was sealed, but also that it is impossible to totally seal a house.

I also called Alliance. As I am in a Row House and own only from the walls in, I figured that since the HOA is responsible for common areas that areas within walls would count as such. Alliance did not agree with that argument and said I was on my own. I just found that out a few days ago. I will probably go with the zappers. I also have a Black Widown living on my front stoop so a trip to Home Depot is in the works which will be followed by mass killings!

We found a live mouse in our pantry Saturday, apparently addicted to goldfish crackers. We relocated him outside. We'd planned on ending his life...but he jumped and ran before we could do it. We went out of town for the night and upon returning last night, we found more droppings, so we think he may have relatives. The week before, our dog found a dead mouse outside and brought her in to show us (on our bed no less!). Possibly that one had been killed and left as an offering by our cats...who are apparently USELESS in the house!

I'm calling our pest control company today...but I thought I'd let y'all know...and also ask if anyone else is having this problem.

We're from up north where the mice are plentiful. I will not use a sticky trap as the mice are so desperate to get off the trap that they will sometimes chew their own legs off. I can't have that on my conscious. We have used live traps with huge success the thing you have to remember is that mice will return and can travel a long way to return to your home so don't just let them out down the street.
Also, you have to be very diligent in finding where they are coming in. They can come in an opening the size of dime. Use steel wool and caulk to seal up any openings. All this we got from an exterminator who said he could set traps, but the mice would just come right back so he didn't want to take our money.
Hope this helps.
