I have discovered evidence of mice in my row house. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed these little guys and what you have done about it? I don't have any pets and I generally try to avoid chemicals. I am also not a wealthy man and prefer the most cost effective means. I have an appointment with ABC (I like their ads). Has anyone used them? Any other recommendations?

I'm sorry you have mice! We got the house treated before we moved in and so far (touch wood) haven't had any problems. We used Aztec Organic Pest Control (http://www.aztecpest.com) and are happy with the results. We haven't had any problems with insects/mice. We choose organic because we have a small baby and didn't check with the other companies.

We use Aztec too. At one point we had rats in our attic (house in Wells Branch) and they were able to get rid of them for us pretty quickly.

if you're really strapped (as we often are), you could just set some good ol' fashioned traps (i find a cotton ball smeared with peanut butter, stuck on the tab does the trick), but if you've got the money, let the pest control dudes handle it. i beat a rat to death in my old apartment with a baseball bat after the rat trap didn't do the job, and lemme tell you: such encounters stick with you.

I've used ABC in the past (at our old place in Clarksville) and they did a great job.

The service they did was twofold - basic trapping and disposal (they put giant scary rat traps in places you wouldn't really want to venture, and then come back a couple times to bag 'em up and dispose of 'em), and then prevention (they find all the ways pests can get in and block them off). They offer a guarantee of a year or two, where they'll come back for free if the problem comes back. I'm sure the other companies do this too, but we've only used ABC. They didn't use any poison (the guy said it wasn't very effective against rodents unless you use really really nasty stuff, which you probably don't want in your house. Plus, the big traps they use are actually a lot more humane, as they kill the rat pretty instantly, compared to poison that might make them suffer quite a bit first.)

With a new house, I'm sure that a) they'll have a pretty easy job of it, and b) if they find evidence of shoddy construction that led to the problem, you might even be able to get the builder to pitch in for it.

Before closing, my inspector found some places where rodents could get into my house and had the builder seal them up. One was where the soffit of the covered walkway out to the garage joined the roof of the house. The other was at an exterior corner of my house where the bottom of the vertical boards stick out a couple inches from the foundation and leave a gap going up into the house.

At my last house I had a rat problem and used A-Tex Pest Management, 577-4454. The guy was great and gave a 6 month warranty, longer than ABC. Most of the $500 expense went to prevention- turns out there were big enough holes in the floor of the pier and beam house and the roof that rats could get in.

I am getting an estimate from ABC in the next few days. Ian and OnLittlefield, how much did ABC and Aztec charge? I am sure it varies with structure and problem, but just so I can have some idea of what I am looking at.
