East Austin Post Office Needs A Stamp Machine

Neighbors,

Is anyone else disturbed by the fact that our closest post office, located at 900 Blackson Ave, does not have a stamp machine? I do not like waiting in line, especially when you don’t have this issue at other offices. Most of the other post offices within the urban core/central city have automated machine that will allow you weigh whatever your mailing and buy exact dollar amount of postage you need for the item your mailing. You can also buy books of stamps through the postage machines.

My friends in Windsor Park say that there was a issue of folks stealing these machines and so they removed. I have not confirmed whether these rumors are true.

I called up the Post Office @ 900 Blackson and I was told that this area of town was not dense enough to get an automated stamp machine. I disagree—especially with all of the projected growth coming to our area.

Neighbors what are your thoughts on this? This might be a simply matter of lobbying Congressmen Lloyd Doggett and Michael McCaul with letters and phone calls. It could also be a great opportunity to work in tandem with other East Austin neighborhoods for a united cause. Thoughts?

My relative works for the post office (not here) and she says that the most likely explanation is that they don't have the parts to fix the machines and they are just telling you anything to get you off the phone.

If you are not a very high volume shipper, she recommends that you can go to the office and pick up some of the priority boxes (they are free) and then whenever you need to ship something you can just login to the website and pay/print a label. Then you can avoid having to drive back to the office a lot as you can just drop these in any blue box. There is one over between the Dell hospital and Chair King. Any extra money you're paying in shipping you'll save in mileage and gas savings.

We used to live closer to the 78723 PO and were never able to get a machine installed - lots of reasons/excuses, but no machine. Now that we live in Mueller the PO on Speedway is closer and they have a machine. It's a short bike ride away.

Do you think there is an equity issue here? You can cross I-35 to access a stamp machine, but can find one East of I-35 in an area that is arguably denser than the Speedway location?

I was told it was due to threat of vandalism.

I go to the one at 43rd/Speedway since it's on my way to work/school.

I'd ask the Austin Main Postmaster that question

...now that I think about it I did ask. At the time the answer was "vandalism after hours". That was several years ago.....

James, I do think there is an equity issue concerning post offices east of IH-35 vs west of IH-35. The main post office on Cross Park Dr. is actually far north east and is located in a commercial vs residential area. There really are only two post offices east of IH 35. One of them, the post office @ 1914 E. 6 th Street, has been targeted for closing.

The post office on E 6th Street is very run down, and there is no slot to deposit packages unlike most post offices. I was told that this was because of theft issues. I didn't check to see if this post office had a stamp machine, but it would not surprise me if it did not.

For those who live in the communities surrounding these post offices without access to the internet, it must be very trying to ship a package or buy stamps. I used to buy stamps at my credit union, but it stopped selling them. I think HEB and other grocery stores sell postage stamps. Despite, the ease and cheapness of email, I still write and send greeting cards.

Please tell us on what street the mailbox near Dell is located. Also, at what cross street is the Post Office on Speedway?
