Google Earth overlay
by bullcreek on June 16th, 2008

Don't know where this belongs, so I'll just put it here. I *think* this will work, but someone try it out and let me know.

The attached file is a Google Earth .kmz file (in a .zip archive). If it behaves as I hope it will you should be able to start Google Earth, select "Open" from the "File" menu, open this file (the attachment), and have an overlay of the Mueller master plan on the appropriate virtual real estate.

If it doesn't work, someone let me know and I'll try to get it sorted. The original version of this had a local file dependency, but I think this version incorporates the .jpg image, so it should work from wherever you open it.

Hint: if you right click on the name of the overlay in the "Places" list on the left (in Google Earth), and select "Get Info" from the menu, you should see a slider that will let you adjust the transparency of the overlay. I set it at a little less than 50% opaque, but your preferences may vary.

Info on Google Earth:

Google Earth streams the world over wired and wireless networks enabling users to virtually go anywhere on the planet and see places in photographic detail. This is not like any map you have ever seen. This is a 3D model of the real world, based on real satellite images combined with maps, guides to restaurants, hotels, entertainment, businesses and more. You can zoom from space to street level instantly and then pan or jump from place to place, city to city, even country to country.

Get Google Earth. Put the world in perspective.

Mark,

Thanks...That works like a charm.

It cool to see exactly where your lot fit in the airport's design. It will be equally cool to take a still of this overlay and compare it to future development and its resulting satellite images.

I created the file on a Mac, so yeah. How's it not working out?

Teehee....I've been telling everyone that I live at the end of a runway according to Google Maps. Nice to see I wasn't completely lying.

I've attached a Google Earth kmz of 2008 aerial photography which the Capital Area Council of Governments just posted. It shows most of Phase 1 on the ground, and the scars of the remaining runways.

I also included the Capital MetroRail stations and line, so we can see how close (or not) the stations will be to our homes and destinations. I'm not sure whether they're working on a 'circulator' to get us to the MLK station, which is the closest. It's definitely accessible by bike, though.

Have fun!

Does anyone still have the .kmz file? There's a discussion going on via Facebook from a resident looking to find it.

Thanks!
