Call for Anecdotes: Streetlamp Stories
by sloneycho on August 26th, 2009

I have been actively pursuing Catellus and Austin Energy in an effort to resolve the severe light trespass on my front porch caused by the streetlamp in front of my home. The only solution Austin Energy is offering is to remove the streetlamp entirely, which requires approval from the Mueller New Construction Council (NCC).

In order to get on the September NCC agenda, I need to submit a written report documenting the light trespass issue within a week. I would like to include an appendix of “Streetlamp Stories” from you, my fellow Muellerites, detailing how the current residential street lighting has affected your experience living here. I am looking to include both positive and negative experiences, so that any resulting change to the Design Book will not throw out the baby with the bath water.

Submissions should be in English, no more than 500 words, and will not be edited, although I may include excerpts elsewhere in the report.

Please submit your story along with your full name and street address to streetlampstories@chiquapin.com streetlampstories@chiquapin.com by 11:59pm on Monday, August 31, 2009.

I will not retain any personal information sent to streetlampstories@chiquapin.com after the report has been produced, and your e-mail address will not appear in the report.

For those unfamiliar with our specific issue with the streetlamps, I put together and submitted a problem statement to Catellus back in June. You can view it here https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B9t2axY1f-dmMTk1NjM3NzItN2E3NS00M2ZjLTllOTAtNWI1ZTRlMTAyYzll.

Whats the process for this submission? I would like to submit something about the lack of lights in the parks... which as your submission points out is required in the design book...

thanks
Ezra.

Start with the POA. They'll let you know who is responsible.

I liked my front porch better when the two nearest street lights were out, but I also like that we can walk the entire neighborhood at night. And I still have about 1/2 sq ft of porch that is shaded from all of them!

Shouldn't we also think about what the lighting situation will look like in 6-8 years when many of our street trees will have grown up around these rather short street lights?

I was a little annoyed by the street lights... but we just moved in and I noticed the trees are already starting to block out one of the lights.

In a few short years, I am pretty sure the lights will be blocked by trees for us, so Idon't mind them. In fact, once trees have gotten larger, I think the frequent lights might be necessary.

I really enjoy walking my dogs at night, and I don't have any kids... but I think once the sidewalk becomes more obstructed by trees, it would be safer with the street lights in place.

Mine don't usually pose a problem, but it's also not directly in front of my house. The other night we were trying to sit on the porch and watch it rain. It can be annoying to have them in your direct line of sight. It seems that they could be placed on lot lines so that no one has a light right in front of their house. We could also consider a lower wattage bulb or fewer lights on the less busy side streets (the wiring could remain for additional lights when the trees are mature). Should we really be wasting energy to run lights now that we might need when the trees mature in 10 years ?

It's a little crazy that we are so well lit and yet there are spots on the running path where you can't even see the trail.

I gotta say I love the street lamps. They did shine in our windows when we first moved in, but blinds which we purchased for privacy take care of that. I really appreciate them when I walk before sunrise as they definitely make me feel more comfortable and safe. Plus I can see where my dog did her business so I can scoop responsibly. In the evenings and mornings they sort of have a cohesive neighborhood feel... a sort of a Thomas Kincaid quality.... the kind of feel that this community drew us to in the first place.

sloneycho:

It looks like there's no unanimity on the streetlight issue. I'd hate to see change to all streetlamps because of one resident's specific issue. Your problem should be addressed, but dissatisfaction with the lighting generally may not be the majority view, and I'm sure you'd agree that all present and future streetlights shouldn't be changed unless there's clear consensus.
