Mueller Tower Lighting Celebration - Nov. 30
by lkunz on November 20th, 2007

Join Catellus Development Group to celebrate the holiday season with the relighting of the historic NOEL sign atop the former airport control tower at Mueller. The annual event will take place at Mueller Central on Friday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

In addition to relighting the NOEL sign, the event will also feature live holiday entertainment, refreshments and ornament making to decorate holiday trees that will be donated to Dell Children’s Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House and Austin Children’s Shelter. Catellus is also asking attendees to bring their own family photographs of the control tower throughout the years and share their memories of the historic structure.

WHAT: Tower Lighting holiday celebration at Mueller

WHEN: Friday, Nov. 30, 2007 beginning at 6:30 p.m.; lighting to take place at 8 p.m.

WHERE: Mueller Central, located off Airport Blvd. between Manor Rd. and I-35; parking will be available at the retail center and along the streets near Mueller Central

Y'all come.

I think Catellus is pulling out the all the stops again, and this should be another fine event for us to get together.

I think with the young kids, we'll be doing the party before 8 pm, but we'll be there!

Heres a Statesman story on the tower lighting:

I'm still trying to figure out how anybody ever worked there when the door was three stories off the ground (3rd picture).

Particularly interesting are some of the comments beneath the article that reflect some Austinites view of our neighborhood.

I was curious how the current community design integrates with the tower, so I Googled up the old airport and tried to find the tower. I indicated on the map the towers current location (you can tell by the shadows):

Using my powers of guestimation, I determined that the tower fit in either at 1) or 2) on the above map:

I'm thinking that the current plan has the tower located in the park at #2. This seems like a reasonable approach (no one is going to want to live directly across the street from it), and maybe they can stick a beer garden or an ice cream place there in the park with it. Of course, they're gonna have to doll up the building a little bit, and maybe slap a clock and observation deck on it as well.

If you go into Mueller Central, they now have this really cool model up of what Mueller is going to look like. Here's a close up of our house. Apparently, we are going to have to live under a billboard that says "Homes now selling". I wonder when that's going to go up.
