Update:

The farmers are coming! Hands of the Earth will come to Mueller at about 11am on Sat., Feb. 14, to give a presentation immediately following the MNA meeting at the Ronald McDonald House. They will give a short (10-15min) presentation and answer questions.

Hands of the Earth now has a new website up and running:

http://sites.google.com/site/handsoftheearth http://sites.google.com/site/handsoftheearth

Now, we are up to at least 5.5 shares, so it is still yet to be determined if Hands of the Earth will be bringing food directly to Mueller. You may remember that Monday is a potential drop off day for Mueller, Saturday is possible if food is picked up at the farm (don't know how much food fits in my car/how many people this would require), and farmers markets Saturday (downtown) and Wednesday (Triangle) are standard pickup points.

So, you who have expressed interest: if you are flexible and would like to join regardless of pickup day/location, please bring payment to the presentation, or send it with me if you can't make it. Likewise, anyone else, if you come to the presentation and can make a decision at that time, it would be great if you are able to pay to confirm your share with the farm. I have kept them posted on number of shares we are interested in, and there should be space, but obviously they are trying to sell as many shares as they have room for before the season starts.

Payment info repeated: full share - $600; half share - $300; payment plans available, with $150 minimum down. Checks can be made out to Hands of the Earth.

Lilyrose,

Thank you so much for arranging their vist to our neighborhood meeting. As you know, I am very excited about Hand's of The Earth's interest in having a drop-off/pick-up location in our neighborhood. As far as I can tell, it would be the only CSA pick-up location east of I-35. I am willing to publicize their presence at the MNA meeting with the other neighborhoods through their various listserves. Would you like me to give it a try?

The Harris's would also be interested in half a share.

Having a CSA drop-off point at Mueller would go a long way towards having a Farmer's Market site here.

Lilyrose -

Do you know if the farm includes fruits in their deliveries?

Also, we would offer our front porch as a drop-off site if there are enough shares for the drop-off.

Ling,

Not to speak for Lilyrose, but I was referencing the Local Harvest page for Hands of the Earth http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M26976, and they show some fruit delivery (canteloupes, figs, melons, and watermelons). As you probably know, the exact produce is farm and weather-dependent.

I would encourage anyone interested in meeting the HotE folks to attend our MNA meeting this Saturday at 10:00am and stay for the HotE presentation at 11:00am. 4th Floor of the Ronald McDonald House. http://www.muellercommunity.com/index.php?module=Events&op=view&EventID=66

Bring your questions and ask the farmer. :)

I know we are sitting at ~7 shares right now with the requirement of 10 for a drop-off.

I have a friend who lives about a mile from here who is already a member of this CSA and drives to one of the more far away drop-off locations to get her food each week.

Hands of the Earth should have information regarding the addresses of its CSA members; I would put money on the probability that quite a few live closer to us than the current drop-off locations. Although we may not reach 10 within Mueller, I think an argument could still be made when considering these additional CSA members.

I am doubtful HoTE will share the address info with me, but if they will I would be happy to chart them out and give them a headcount for a drop-off they could make in our neighborhood for all those who would be better served by our location. That way they could just do our drop-off while driving to or from their other one(s), essentially no marginal cost to them and definitely a lot more earth friendly than 20 or 30 cars all driving further to the other location(s).

Do you think this is a possibility?

Yep, it is a possiblility and we should inquire about that with them on Saturday.

At this time, we are also putting out the listserve call to Cherrywood, Wilshire Woods, Delwood II, Windsor Park, University Hills and the Maplewood Elementary School with the same line of thinking. We will either drum up new support or discover current HotE customers where Mueller would be a more convenient pick-up location.

I think we've shown we have the demand here, and that our neighborhood will be a good partner for Hands of the Earth.
