CSA pick-up opportunity for Mueller
by lilyrose on January 23rd, 2009

Hands of the Earth, a local organic CSA (community-supported agriculture) farm, is willing to make Mueller one of its food drop-off/pick-up locations, if there are enough people to have at least 10 whole shares at this point. (half shares are available.)

If you are interested, please PM me (or post questions/discussion here) as soon as possible, as they would like to complete signups for their non-farmers market locations by the end of January, at which point they open up to new members (I am a returning member.)

Their first proposal was to bring food to Mueller on Mondays during the day - that will not work for me (although maybe it would be convenient for someone else) so they have also offered to let one or two people get the food directly from their farm on Saturdays and distribute here. (that could work for me, the farm is only a few miles away.) If this doesn't work out for us as a group then hopefully anyone who wants to sign up with them could do so anyway, and get food from one of their standard farmers market locations (downtown and Triangle).

Below is a condensed version of the farm spring season info:

What will I receive in exchange for my CSA investment?
You will receive a weekly or biweekly bountiful share of the freshest in-season produce from our sweet little farm. In your weekly share you will find an ever evolving assortment of: radishes, tomatoes, squash, okra, peppers, garlic, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, brussels sprouts, beets, carrots, many varieties of greens including mustards, swiss chard, arugula, lettuces and salad mixes, and kale. Also expect onions, leeks, scallions, and fresh herbs such as parsley, dill, basil and cilantro. We like to grow some showy and exotic varieties while providing a consistent supply of traditional favorites and staple veggies. The timing and yield of all these crops will of course be subject to the weather and other factors.

At present we are not pursuing organic certification, yet we always adhere to the organic standards and strive to go even further towards honoring all life on our farm, and on this beautiful planet. If you would like to see our methods for yourself, we invite you to schedule a visit to Hands of the Earth.

When is the Spring/Summer season?
The season will run 20 weeks approximately from March 21st to August 1st. We are offering two options for this season - a Full Share of produce to be picked up every week, or a Half Share which will include the same size share on an every other week basis. Because all veggies will be fresh-picked and delivered immediately, they often keep up to 2 weeks, much longer than those from the store.

What is the cost of membership?
The Full Share option cost is $600 for the season while the Half Share is $300 ($30 per week). We prefer to receive full payment in advance to help fund the new season's plantings and startup costs. If you can afford this, we are sincerely grateful for your investment. We also believe everyone should have access to healthy fresh produce and offer payment plans which allow you to pay for your share in 2 to 4 payments over the season. We require a minimum investment of $150 to reserve your membership.

yay local fresh veggies! lilyrose :)

Lilyrose,

I'd think our neighborhood is ready, as many are currently interested finding an open CSA, many use delivery services like Greenling, and many more visit the Farmer's Market.

We are definitely in for a half-share, and I bet we could fill in the rest of the demand easily with other neighbors in Mueller and surrounding neighborhoods, particularly if we could organize an meet-and-greet with Marysol, either here or at her farm. Is this something you would be willing to try and organize? Next Saturday maybe if she needs a quick answer.

I am very excited about finding an open CSA with a dedicated farmer. I feel knowing the farmer and putting in a little sweat equity in a CSA is an enriching experience.

Here is a blog entry that mentions Marysol and Hands of the Earth.

Update: As suggested, I have contacted the farmers at Hands of the Earth and asked if they can come to meet people and talk about the farm (or what hours we could visit them at the farm). They also have a regular stand at the downtown farmers market on Saturdays, and at the Triangle on Wednesdays. (in fact those are their regular food pickup points if Mueller doesn't work out as a satellite for this season.)

As of this time we only have 2.5 full shares so we'll just see what happens and maybe get a larger group by the fall/winter season.

By the way, the previous farmers, when the CSA was Oasis Gardens, did have a sweat equity option which was a lot of fun and cut down on the price. Hands of the Earth does not have that option, but they teach others about farming through internships and working with Urban Roots - a program where high-school age youth spend time working and learning at the farm.

I'll keep you posted. lilyrose :)

We are interested. Hearing a presentation would be helpful, and we routinely visit the Saturday Farmer's Market, so should we miss the presentation we could talk with folks there.
