We've been told by AT&T that Austin's growth rate has resulted in cell carriers being unable to keep up with demand for bandwidth, and that towers are overloaded much of the time. Our cell service at home is almost unusable without a MicroCell, even outdoors. Are others experiencing the problem? Which carriers have good service here (and decent coverage nationwide / worldwide)?
Interesting; so your Verizon works fine? Consumer Reports rates them highly, and our contract is almost up with AT&T. Our biggest concern is with coverage...and it seems to be variable across our neighborhood, with the best signal near Airport Blvd based on opensignal.com's coverage maps. If you're near there, that might explain why your service is OK... I'll try to remember to check coverage next time I'm over that way.
Verizon is one of the better I've ever had. I used to travel to really dinky places, and it always worked, if only enough to make a call. And I don't have any trouble in the house, which is awesome.
I also recommend Verizon. We switched to them several years ago and I consistently get great coverage all over the country, at three different homes, at two different work locations. I used to work in a basement office where almost no one got coverage but I could talk on my phone at my desk. We live on McBee and have no problems.

Sprint will not work reliably in our house on Upper camacho. Have to go outside. They say "tower upgrades" this Summer will fix it. I don't believe them. When our contract expires I'm dumping them
Has anyone had experience with T-Mobile and their wi-fi calling feature? We had AT&T, but it was pricey and we did not get coverage in the house. We switched to Virgin Mobile, which is much cheaper, but we still have coverage problems(going on 2 yrs). We live on Zach Scott. Unless we are outside we get 0 or 1 bars. My wife works near 29th and Lamar and also gets no service unless she is outside her office.
After initially refusing to provide a MicroCell, AT&T finally gave us one. Reception quality is great now...but we still aren't sure we'll continue with them when our contract runs out. We've stayed because we're grandfathered with unlimited data. Depending on rates, we may switch to Verizon.
I have T-Mobile and have never had a problem ... never less than 4 bars. My daughter has T-Mobile w/wi-fi and has no problems, though she does not live in Mueller, but lives far North and works far South. No problems for her there or when she's at my home.
As discussed in previous threads: http://www.citicite.com/mueller/index.php?module=Forums&op=posts&ForumID=5&TopicID=9063 I found the micro cell to be worthless. Among other issues, the cell would consistently drop my phone inside the house, and coming and going meant that I would have to reboot the silly thing, and then my phone. Drove me insane. I told them that I would keep my kids on their plan, they don't spend enough time inside the house to make a difference. I was allowed to leave the contract with no penalty and join my husband on Verizon. Be aware that you will have to get a new phone. ATT is high frequency and travels further, Verizon is low frequency, and can go through walls, like the boom boom boom you hear from cars with the bass cranked.
