Another thing is not making ourselves an easy target by leaving valuables outside (planters are probably okay along with other various landscaping can probably stay outside) or our garage doors open. Let your neighbors know that their garage doors are open (I've done it).

I still contend that unless you live in that particular alley or are working on/in a house there, people have no business being in the alleys. Driving through alleys serves what purpose? We followed some fellas who were obviously not working/living here driving through 3 different alleys before they got the idea we were watching them and split. We called the police anyways and told them the make model and license plate of the vehicle... It seemed like such a small thing to report but the dispatcher assured us it was cool and also the APD unit assigned the call gave us a call to let us know he looked through the area but didn't find anything and that he would add to the frequency of patrols for the neighborhood...

When in doubt... call 911. Crime prevention is as much a part of public safety as is crime solving.

So apparently no active patrols right now, we just need to call the police anytime we see suspicious activity and take down license plates. We may need to get together and form a neighborhood watch of some sort. I am guessing that this sort of problem will be an issue until the economy turns around in a year or two...

If we as neighbors are diligent in reporting and catching these petty thiefs the word will get out that Mueller is not an easy target for porch theft crimes or worse.

Look in the pawn shops around here...I believe that one is down airport. I am not sure if the fools would actually try to pawn these items but we already know they are ignorant so I would definately check. If you find your stolen goods you may contact the police and they may have actually used their licenses to pawn their stolen wares. You never know...

Someone could have easily been killed with the speed/ way they were driving out of the neighborhood...lets get tough on crime around here.

In the mean time.. stay alert!

The shattered glass on Tom Miller near Hargis also reminds me to hide anything of value when parking on the street.

.Some of the homes right across airport are pretty nice, older obviously, but nice.

Growing up here in Austin and remembering when this was an airport and the current airport was still an Air Force Base, this part of town was not that nice. Obviously times have changed since then and this area is becoming better by the day, but there is still some remnants of this being a VERY tough part of town that are not too far away.

I do agree though, that we all need to keep an eye out for suspicious people/behavior/activity/etc. I saw not too long ago, like maybe a month or two, a police car shining his spotlight on a home being built over by the lakes. He drove around front and back, not sure if he was really looking for anyone in particular, but he was spotlighting.

I was under the impression off-duty APD officers were patrolling and were paid thru POA? No more? If they are, its baffling that they aren't more of a presence such that residents (and APD apparently) would know whether or not this is the case. Patrol is useful when they are present and visible and known throughout the community.

Those neighborhood watch signs are expensive, but I know where we can get some "free" ones.

When we go out to walk the dog, I always take my phone with me so I have a camera available too.

Speaking of cameras, Kevin had some idea of adding live streaming for residence who have exterior cameras on their homes. I might entertain that idea. Adding a camera to my garage eave would give a nice view of the alley entrance and street.

NO! No, no, no, no. Just relocating them to a neighborhood that has a watch program.

We do have off-duty APD officers patrolling, but it's not 24/7. They have a random schedule to keep the bad guys guessing.

Neighborhood watch signs are the minimum we should do. As a former felony prosecutor, I can tell you that reporting license plates of vehicles that "seem suspicious" give the police no probable cause to do anything. Its only when they do something that the police can actually stop them. But usually the police don't get there in time.

We need stronger deterants. Cameras, speed bumps, neighborhood watch signs -these are things that work to some extent. I know we don't want to look like a fortress but facts are facts and if you check the police blotter, the area around us is in fact what is considered a high crime area and we are an attractive target. I normally wouldn't be an alarmist but now that I have a child I don't want a place where I have to worry about a speeding getaway car mowing him down.
