Home Security Options?
by Gil on February 26th, 2008

Hi everyone,

We are moving in to our Meritage house on Lawless later this week, and I was hoping to hear more about home security services from people who have already selected a provider. I have seen signs for several companies in front of houses, including:

Protection One (Have seen this discussed in another thread)
Monitronics
Central Security Group
Ranger American (seems to be a DW deal)

It would be great to hear a little about why people chose a specific provider as we get ready to make that decision. Thanks a bunch!

Hey Gil-

Our homeowner's insurance company has deals worked out with a few providers (I think ADT is one) that offer a discount to policyholders. I think the discount may cut two ways, in that you get some reduced monthly rate for the monitoring, as well as an incentive of some sort on your policy premium. That might be one avenue to help narrow the search. I need to look into it, too, thanks for the reminder.

We went with Central Security Group... contact Jerome Isaac at 512/775-6963. He's great to work with...

I believe our plan is $23/month?? I'm not 100% sure on that, but it's give or take a couple of bucks.

In hindsight i would have taken one of the following routes:
A) $18 plan - same as our $23 plan but doesn't come with a warranty on the system. Not sure why I thought it was a good idea to spring for the $5/month warranty that's already somewhat covered, but oh well. So, if you want a low price on monitoring service, call Isaac.

B) No monitoring service. Monitoring service doesn't activate your alarm... all it does it send the police/fire dept if you fail to respond to their phone call. If your alarm goes off they try to contact you for a couple of minutes. If no response, or if the person who answers gives an invalid response, they call the appropriate people. Having the police come out is rediculous... i accidentally set off my mother-in-law's system a couple of months ago in Oak Hill and the cops didn't show until 45 minutes later (I hope that was an exception to the rule)! And they didn't even check my id! Notifying the fire department would be the primary benefit... but i'm not sure that you or your neighbors wouldn't be able to contact 911 by the time the monitoring service would?
Again, you have an alarm... all you're paying for is the monitoring service. When your alarm goes off it is completely obnoxious!! Our homes are so close together that any decent neighbor would check out your home to make sure everything's ok (and we have tons of those around!). And no way a burgler would stick around your house after the alarm goes off... even if they did i'm sure they'd have plenty of time to bail before the police arrived.

Anyway, just my two cents... If you're looking for a provider, I recommend calling Isaac.
