Interested to see that you discussed alternative names for the Town Center vs Aldrich Street. As some of you may recall, at the last Town Meeting one man suggested using various things to decorate etc that come from the old airport.

Possibly a name related to an airport could make a good alternative name. So far we have the Tower District, the Hanger as places. To get the ideas started: Landing Strip, Gates. Runway. I imagine someone can do better than these. And if Catellus is set on the Aldrich Street name, maybe some of the areas within the Town Center could have "airport-like" names.

I've been gratified that so many people were interested in the suggestion to tie our neighborhood's aviation heritage into the development of Town Center through the use of reclaimed materials from the old airport. I hope they kept enough of that stuff to use. For example, I know they kept the old red bench shelters from the parking lot bus stops and it would be great to make use of those somewhere.

I think they are pretty well down the path with the Aldrich Street brand, but the aviation names for spaces within would be cool. "The Runway" for example, would be a fun thing to call the paseo.

I'm a fan of using reclaimed material from the airport as well as other items from around town (maybe there is a moonlight tower in storage somewhere?). I'm somewhat concerned that Aldrich St. may not have a sold sense of place. I want to make sure it feels like Austin and not Anywhere USA.

Great ideas! I like "The Runway" and an old Moonlight Tower would be incredible!

How about "The Terminal" or "The Terminus"

According to this link posted in our forum, http://www.notevenpast.org/texas/city-lights-austins-historic-moonlight-towers, there should be 2 moon towers looking for new homes right now! Who do we talk to about getting one here?

I'm glad to see there is some positive feedback on this idea - when I threw it out I wasn't sure whether anyone would agree this could be a great icon for our little community.

Austin has 17 of the 31 original towers. Three are currently down for various reasons. The one at 22nd and Nueces was taken down after damaged in an accident (you can see the tower base there). There is another at Cesar Chavez and Trinity and one at West Fourth and Nueces that were dismantled for new construction. Supposedly they are all to go back up after restoration

But if for some reason it they don't or can't go back into the original locations I think one would be a fantastic addition to Mueller and really a great landmark for town center.

BTW - it isn't unprecedented for the Tower's to be moved. The one originally put up in Emma Long Park was moved to Zilker Park

One complicating factor now is they're listed on that National Register of Historic Places - so that could possibly impact where they need to be restored to.

Below is a good little story on the three towers currently down.

Anyway, if we had a moonlight power at Town Center it could solve the issue with the name - "Party at the Moontower!"

Love, Love, Love this idea!!

What can we do to move this idea along? :) I won't be able to make the MNA meeting tomorrow - can someone bring this topic up then?

I cannot tell you how happy this moon tower business would make me. I'd be "over the moon"!! But for real. Who's a council person who could help facilitate?
