Chevy Volt

For any of those Pecan Street Volunteers that are shopping for your Volt now, thought I would share a couple things I learned in case it is helpful.

- Consider looking at dealerships in small towns pretty far from Austin. I worked with a few in Austin, they would come down a bit in price, but not a whole lot, I think there is enough demand for them in Austin that they do not have to budge too much. Then I decided to see if a place in “truck country” would beat the prices and make it worth my drive. They beat all Austin offers by quite a bit – I think they may just want to get the Volts off their lot – ha! I tried to use that offer to negotiate with ones in back town and no one could even come close. I ended up going about two hours away to McGregor, kinda east of Waco. They were super nice, did everything they said they would over email – we negotiated all the details via email before I made the drive. I even negotiated my trade value via email, and they honored the price when I got there, I was worried they might use that as a reason to get me out there, and then try to shortchange me – but they honored it, no problem.

- Maybe this is common knowledge, but I also learned to get your trade-in appraised at CarMax. In my case, Car Max offered quite a bit more than any of the dealers did. But when I would ask the dealerships to match CarMax +$500 after offering their low bids, they all agreed easily (maybe that means I should have asked for even more! ha).

Good luck everyone!

Hey Ashley thanks for the info.

We are looking at getting a Volt through the Pecan deal. We got the invite!

A couple of quick questions:
1. Is the government tax credit still available?
2. Did you have a 220 volt plug installed in your garage (I thought there was a deal for this somewhere)

Thanks,

JOHN

John,

- Definitely talk to a tax professional to confirm, but this is my understanding. Yes, there is an UP TO $7500 federal rebate available, but many people will not see that full amount. Depends on your tax situation.

-We just have it hooked up to a regular plug in our garage. Takes about 9 hours to charge when the battery is completely empty. From my understanding, Austin Energy offers a 50% rebate (up to $1500) for installing charging equipment in your home. I have not looked into what that would cost. For now, I am just going to use my 110.

I signed up to be on the list but haven't heard back from Pecan Street. Does that mean I wasn't selected as a potential buyer?

Me too! I haven't heard anything back from PSP and I missed the Volt party last fall.

Thanks for all of the information, Ashley!

Out of curiosity, does anyone have thoughts on leasing versus buying an electric car? I have always been a car buyer (my current vehicle is 14 years old) but it seems that leasing could have its advantages with new technology.

Kevin/Craig,

PSP is releasing the invitations to purchase or lease at the rate of 20 per month with the goal of having 20 "takers" each month so they might actually issue more monthly invitations.

The final goal is 100 study participants after 5-6 months so, I would not be too concerned about missing the boat. Of the 100, there will be 20 purchase incentives and 80 lease incentives so once the 20 purchase incentives are used, the rest of the participants will only be offered the lease incentive.

I just can't wait to see how crazy the neighborhood streets will look with every other car being a Chevy Volt, with a smattering of new Leafs and old Prii. If we didn't have a 'Green Stepford' image before...

Dusty, where did you get this information? I have not seen this anywhere. Lease vs. buy decision on the part of the household potentially not being an option is concerning to me.

I had the lease vs purchase conversation (argument) with my husband and the jury is out. Given the tax and PSP incentives for both purchase and lease you can't go wrong either way and we are, like you, at our core a purchase family with long term ownership as the goal. So we're buying!

And it's hard for me to fathom 1 in 8 houses owning or leasing a Volt in the next year - I'm guessing anyone who wants the opportunity to participate will be able to. I think PSP is just moving slowly and using the first families as guinea pigs to work out kinks in the program.
