In case people have not seen it, just wanted to point out some information about the planning of urban rail in Austin.

At the link below, you will find the recent memo from City Manager Marc Ott to Council regarding urban rail. There are some timeline, funding and phasing details included here. And looks like there might be some decisions made in the near future.

They plan to recommend a funding plan and "first investment" to Council soon.

Ashley,

Thanks a lot for the info. Hopefully the funding will get approved.

Thanks for posting. We are mentioned several times in the document, which is encouraging.

Yes, but the discouraging part is they are estimating potential for new ridership based on 2010 census counts. I doubt that field mice, bunnies, and lizards will be counted. For the amount of money they're spending on this, you'd think they'd have someone who does population projections on the team.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but from what I've seen and heard, urban rail will not be on the upcoming bond election. The big ticket item will be a UT-affiliated teaching hospital sponsored by Kirk Watson. Looks like we'll have another 10 years to discuss urban rail.

Oh! No.......
But urban rail is one of the reasons why I chose to move in here. I really can't figure out with the energy price soaring like today's rate. mass communication like rail is the future. The more time we waste now, the more money we need to pay in the future.

Best,

Jack

There are few things in life for which I can claim genuine insider info, but this is marginally one of them, and I've been told the trend line on likelihood of urban rail being on the ballot in November is downward and under 50%.

Austin is in danger of falling *decades* behind Dallas and Houston on this issue. Sad.

I rode the rail.... it was... interesting.

It didn't really seem like it was configured well for "mass transit".

I only have other major subways to compare it to... but cars once an hour is very long, there were way too many seats that took up to much room. I didn't have overhead railing for support... and it goes very slowly.

I would love to take the rail to work, but having to leave an hour early at the very least and a ride that could take 40 minutes as opposed to a 10 minute drive is not ideal.

It's great that we have a rail system at all... but I was not hugely thrilled about it. Having to cross the tracks to get to the wait station in the middle shocked me. It seemed incredibly dangerous.

Yeah, there was pretty obvious starter route (the #1) and neither the urban rail proposal or the Red Line serve it, thought the urban rail sort of gets the same area.

Not to be melodramatic, but Austin may well be paying the cost of the 2000 light rail defeat for generations.
