Meritage Honeywell Thermostat touch screen failing
by cliffjstx on May 2nd, 2011

I have been having recurring problems with the thermostats that Meritage installed.
Sometimes the touch screen will NOT respond to a touch. When this happens, I have to keep trying until it responds. It is now happening more frequently, and sometime lasts for several minutes before responding to touch commands. Also, when it happens it sometime will respond to a touch on one side, but not the other side of the screen.

I was having problems in the first year, so it was replaced during that year. Now the new one is about 2 years old (3 yrs in the house).

Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any suggestions for how to clear this problem when it happens?

We had the same problem. We called Honeywell and they said the control unit was still under warranty. We set up an appt and if I remember correctly, the part was free but we had to pay labor?? I forget. Good luck!

I started a thread about this a couple weeks ago when the Honeywell thermostat in my Meritage home stopped responding to touch. Just when I was about to call to have it replaced, it started working again....but now it's stopped responding again.

It seems there are lots of people having the same issue.

When I found out the thermostat is still under warranty (5yrs) - I asked them to send me a part and they said they only deal through contractors. So the part may be free but I'll end up paying for the service call.

Well, I had a total failure of my thermostat over the weekend of 5/14. Casa Mechanical came on the Saturday, but could not fix the problem since they did NOT have the model of thermostat that we have on the truck. They returned on Monday and replaced the thermostat. No charge for thermostat since it was covered by warranty, but had to pay for labor charges for the call and minimum service time.

By the way, my thermostat replacement was the 8th or 9th Meritage home with this problem.

One tip the Casa service person said was to always ground yourself before touching the thermostat's touch display panel. Static electricity in the dry weather can cause problems for the panel. Best bet is to always touch the screw on a wall switch (which is often near the panel anyway), before touching the thermostat panel.

Another tip....get another product if possible. The technician from Casa that came to my house said that he comes out to Mueller a few times a month...more often than most neighborhoods to work on/replace these thermostats. He also said that these were used through some deal with the City...and that it's well known that they are poorly made.

All this is second hand - my wife is the one who actually talked to the guy, but it sounds about right.

I wasn't able to get another product but I'm very disappointed in the existing thermostat so far. When I contacted Honeywell, the manufacturer, they were no help and said they only deal with contractors and not individuals like you and me.

$73 later my "warrantied" thermostat screen is replaced and it took all of about 5 minutes.

Does anyone know the exact model # of the failing unit? The David Weekley unit was a VisionPro IAQ (TH9421C1004 in my case). It's printed on the back of the unit, visible if you pop it off the wall plate.

Here is my question: the wall plate says it must be replaced if the thermostat is replaced. Is that true? It seems logical that a new unit with the same specs should pop on that base. Mine was working well until someone broke the touch screen... warranty voided, it's DIY time!

BTW, I have learned that Honeywell has the VisionPro line - 5 yr warranty requiring PRO installation. They also have a DIY line with a 1 year warranty. The 7-day programmable DIY looks like the VisioinPro, maybe with fewer advanced features. There is a DIY hotline & hopefully more support for that one. Amazon has it for $ 91. VisionProIAQ replacement unit is $175. I will attempt to determine if these can be treated as plug & play devices and report back. If someone already knows the answer- please let us know.

It appears the VisionPro IAQ is the unit in question. It does have a 5 year warranty (although it will cost you a serivce call to replace). If it freezes up, call for service before you get mad & break it. There is something odd about it using only 3 wires to control everything. I've been advised that I should be able to pop a new one onto the existing wall plate and be good to go.

It's possible that another model from the Vision Pro line would work (as they all seem to run on a 3 wire system). There is an IAQ "version 2". No real information as to why there's a 2.0. Maybe something about high failure rates.

The DIY model 8500 does not have the same interface with the wall plate The diagrams for installation are set up for 5-6 wires. Not sure how you'd make it work with 3 wires... Not saying it can't be done, but it may be easier to use something from the VisionPro line.

Of course the happens to us on one of the coldest nights of the year and at very close ro the 5 year warrantey end. The right side of our Honeywell touch screen was not responding to touch. At first i thought my 2 year old somehow got into the 0670 setting and changed the screen to be partially locked, but quickly realized the right side wasnt working.
Save money and do this yourself. Pull the face off the wall. Pop off the plastic cover (it may sound like its cracking, but its okay). Pull out the circuit board by pulling the tabs on the 2 sides. You'll see 2 ribbons, one for the LCD connection and one for the touchscreen. Pull up the 2 small tabs on the sides of each ribbon (the will only move up a couple of mms). Be careful with the ribbons, but pull them out from the circuit board. Put the ribbons back, push down the tabs, pop the circuit board back in the casing, and test it out. Mine worked immediately after.
