Zoysia grass?
by jillians on January 14th, 2009

Why do the model homes have zoysia but we are stuck with bermuda grass? The lower water needs of zoysia would seem to make it the "greener" choice (also greener ). I think I've seen a little St. Augustine around as well, maybe the row house models.

I'm having Zoysia envy...

Jill,

My guess is that the Model Homes have a base Bermuda grass over-seeded with an annual Winter Rye grass to keep their unnaturally green lawn year around. Over-seeding with Rye is OK for a few seasons, but usually begins to compete for nutrients with the base warm-season grass and robs "health" from your base turfgrass.

Zoysia is a nice grass, but it is not typically considered "greener" or more drought-tolerant than Bermuda. Bermuda, for all its invasive warts, is the most drought-tolerant, low-water turfgrass this side of Buffalograss, which is really a clumpgrass masquarading as a turfgrass. If we must have turfgrass, TIF Bermuda is not a bad choice.

It does bear a striking resemblence to the medians on Airport Blvd. I'm sure you're right.

Can you tell me why my crazy Copper Canyon Daisy (mexican bush marigold) won't bloom? It's growing like a weed.

Can't tell ya exactly what was happening with the Copper Canyon Daisies, but none or few around Mueller have bloomed. I do know that they like well-drained soil (as do most plants), so Mueller's compacted clay and/or a heavy irrigation schedule may be part of the answer.

I hear that some of the gardening-type neighbors are organizing a spring garden event at Mueller. I also hear that they are going to bring in Master Gardeners to give personalized advice...maybe to point where they will come to your home, tell you you what plants you have and how to care for them...Sounds Interesting, huh?

Dusty, thanks for mentioning the 'gardening neighbors' ... it's true and we hope to bring some expertise to bear on both our private and public landscaping issues. We have an opportunity at Mueller to have really great landscapes (in spite of some of the errors made by the builders). And we have the chance for absolutely stupendous landscaping in the public areas.

Anyone who's interested and wants to be kept informed, please send me a PM and I'll be sure you get on the email list for notices and announcements. You don't have be a 'garderner', just interested in learning more.

Gardeners, landscapers and those interested, there is now an MC Group for you. Go to 'Groups', click on the gardening group and join. Note the announcements already posted, most of all about the Mueller Plant Festival on March 14. This will be a great event for meeting one another, learning and getting involved. There will be tours, presenttions, habitat stuff, good things for the kids, and even the possibility of planting some native grasses in teh greenbelt.

Keep abreast of the good stuff - go to Groups and sign up.

So once, I was looking at this platform that has fake grass for sale advertisement and it got me very interested. So, I have researched it and decided to buy it at the same time. It was so worth it and I was very glad I came across this product.
