Petanque games at Paggi Square
by Jim Schwobel on July 28th, 2013

Howdy Teddy,

Thanks for your question about the differences between bocce ball and petanque (also called "boules").

There are numerous web sites that address this question and here is a quote from one of them:

---------------------------------------------------------------
A question often asked is "What is the difference between bocce, the Italian bowling game and pétanque?"
The difference is this: traditional bocce is more of a bowling game, whereas pétanque is more of a tossing game, like horseshoes.
Bocce players take steps before throwing, pétanque players stand still (with both feet within a 50 cm circle).
Bocce balls are usually rolled palm up, pétanque balls tossed palm down, so they get backspin upon release.
Pétanque balls are the size of an orange, hollow, and always made of metal.
Bocce balls are larger and solid, about the size of a grapefruit, colored (green & red are popular), and generally made of resin or wood.
Bocce has different variations as to court size and layout. The court should be smooth and flat; some rules call for wooden sideboards to make it an enclosed area.
Pétanque can be played on almost any terrain; most players actually prefer an uneven terrain to make it more challenging.
The counting of points and game tactics are very similar between the two games.
Overall pétanque is more flexible (no need to find a court), and the equipment is easier to carry around. For the record, there is a variation of bocce ("bocce volo") where balls are delivered palm down and metal balls are used. The players run-up in this one is spectacular, similar to "boule Provençale", the forefather of pétanque.

--------------------------------------------------

...so Teddy, I can tell you that there are bocce ball games played here in Austin and you can easily find them by searching the Internet.

The Heart of Texas Petanque Club (the folks who conduct those free petanque lessons on Saturday mornings, 10 am to noon, at Paggi Square) plays at least three times a week at several venues.

We also sponsor several tournaments every year, with many international players in attendance. Some of those tournaments are at the Browning Hangar, located in the Mueller Community. Since Paggi Square was designed with petanque in mind, we will be holding future tournaments there.

For Mueller residents who attend our free petanque lessons at Paggi Square, they will have that all-important "home court advantage" if they choose to play in tournaments held there!

Regards,
Heart of Texas Petanque Club

by Jim Schwobel on August 30th, 2013

...and the Petanque lessons continue - Saturday, August 31, 10:00 am to noon at Paggi Square - 2100 Robert Browning St.

These FREE lessons are conducted by the The Heart of Texas Petanque Club. Come experience this easy-to-learn sport that is played all over the world. All equipment will be provided.

We also want all previous students to know that while the classes are going on, members of the Heart of Texas Petanque Club will be playing games - and anyone who has attended a class is invited to come play. This is a great way to get some more hands-on experience.

There is a group of Muller folks who took the class and were so inspired that they now play on Friday evenings - starting around 6-7 pm. Come by and see them "in action".

If you want to learn more about this sport, please visit our blog site where you will see links to lots of information: Petanque rules, where to buy equipment, etc..

Paggi Square Petanque
by Mateo Barnstone on September 12th, 2013

There is a weekly Friday evening petanque game at Paggi Square. Feel free to drop by and play or just take in the action.

For this Friday the thirteenth be sure to bring your A-game because lady luck will surely not be on your side. We divvy up teams promptly at 7 PM - latecomers will be added as space allows. As always, for those wanting a bit more time on the terrain, some us show up between 6 and 6:30 for practice, feel free to join in.

Also -

Heart of Texas Petanque Club is continuing their FREE lessons on Saturday, September 14. Lessons begin at 10 AM and run to about noon. They provide all the equipment so all that is needed is the ability to fog a mirror and a healthy appetite for competition.

A very big MERCI to Jim Schwobel, Michael Hillis and Christophe Chambers
by Mateo Barnstone on November 21st, 2013

Jim, Michael and Christophe have been kind enough to donate their time and efforts every week at Paggi Square towards teaching Mueller residents the rules, tactics and strategy of the game of petanque for free. Along the way they helped to create a vibrant community that is growing in popularity each week and quickly becoming one of the hottest games in town.

All Mueller petanquers, and anyone else interested in the game, is invited to bundle up and join us for hot coffee, pastries and boules this Saturday, November 23rd at 10;00AM. The tentative location is Paggi Square, however, in the event of inclement weather we will move it to Browning Hangar.

If you've been curious about this game, Saturday will be a great time to swing by, meet some neighbors, enjoy some coffee and pastry on a crisp fall morning and get introduced to the game of petanque.

Please send me PM if you are thinking of coming - that way we can be sure to have plenty of coffee.

Signed,

The Friends of Paggi Square

Coffee, Pastries and Boules postponed
by Mateo Barnstone on November 22nd, 2013

Saner heads have prevailed - due to the unusual cold snap, we are postponing to a date with better weather in the near future.

Hardy souls are welcome to join us for the regular weekly Petanque games at Browning Hangar - 6PM. I'm bringing hot tea for any poor soul willing to brave it.

However, there will not be lessons in Paggi on Saturday :(

See anyone soon.
