Please join me in support of putting the future elementary school at Mueller on the 2008 Bond Package.
This is our last chance to make an impression on the AISD Board of Trustees. Let them know that it is not acceptable to put the surrounding schools in jeopardy for the sake of sticking to a (terrible) policy of waiting for overcrowding to be at emergency levels. Waiting until the next bond will be too late.

7 p.m. on Monday, February 18 in the Board Auditorium, B-100 of the Carruth Administration Center, located at 1111 West Sixth Street.

Citizens may sign up to speak beginning at 7:45 a.m. in the Superintendent's Office, A-250 of the Carruth Administration Center. Sign-up will continue until 7 p.m.

Last time I didn't get there until 6pm but was still able to speak by 7:30pm.

Thanks,

Hey neighbors,

It has been almost four years since this push ... Does anyone have insight on the designated school site?

It seems to have dissapeared as an immediate priority. Why the loss in passion? I am sure many legit reasons exist.

Well, last I heard, we were at least getting a AISD performing arts center. Groundbreaking this year?

what's the deal with the school? an update
by kim wine on February 1st, 2012

We have a committee, MEAT (Mueller Education Action Team) that has been working in some fashion or another since 2007. Last year was a particularly bad year to ask for a school when AISD was slashing the budget and talking about closing other schools around town. A few of us still meet and talk about what we can do. We also meet with Catellus periodically. We helped get out the vote for Tamela Barksdale after meeting with her and her opponent in the school board race for an at large seat. Now, MEAT will actually be a subcommittee for the MNA. We would love to have new members.

As far as the school situation, it is complicated. AISD doesn't believe the projections Catellus gives them. Other parts of town are facing immediate overcrowding. Budget is tight. Schools are being repurposed to avoid closure. People are going to private schools instead. People are transferring away. (I'm NOT judging, just saying it affects the situation)

MEAT has worked hard to come up with outside the box ideas. Our best, IMO, has been that AISD should build a flex-use school at Mueller. Mueller kids would continue to start Pre K or Kinder at either Maplewood, Blanton or Ridgetop. Then, as those schools fill up, students would attend the school at Mueller starting in whatever grade necessary to relieve crowding at those schools. So maybe 3rd grade one year for Maplewood, maybe 5th for Blanton. The point is that it would flex as needs change. This would be a school that goes through middle school (flex to 8). We have mentioned this idea in community input sessions. But again, times are chaotic right now.

Our next MEAT meeting will be on Monday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 at Contigo. I hope we can reinvigorate this committee. (I personally have gone through some burnout on this topic.)

The best way, besides attending that meeting, to know what is going on is to attend the MNA meetings, as I will be a liason with them on what is going on with MEAT and AISD. Also, watch the AISD Board meetings (http://archive.austinisd.org/inside/board/meetings.phtml http://archive.austinisd.org/inside/board/meetings.phtml) and check out the AISD website. http://www.austinisd.org http://www.austinisd.org There is a wiki page on this site that has some info, and I will attempt to update it soon. I guess the gist of it for me is that the more we can educate ourselves on what is going on outside of the meetings, the more time we can spend on working on solutions. And if you are just an action person, we will post here for help when we need it.
