Questionable Bills From HOA
by gregg on November 26th, 2008

I worked with TimeWarner to be excluded from the 'special' deal, because we just need internet service. (Bought DTV - rabbit ears converter, and love it) It's scheduled to be set up ~December 3, so we'll see how it works, then I'll be waiting for that first POA bill to make sure we're not double-billed. Anyway, it's possible to get out of it.

We appreciate the blogs, they provide a variety of useful information. The HOA bill was confusing for us. The email flow helps see how to straighten out the confusion. There have also been great suggestions on lowering phone and other bills--we are currently getting hammered on cell phone use, and the toptions discussed by neighbors are highly intriguing--as one example.

Elizabeth- We had U-Verse installed when we moved in this past December. It was never a question since we had it at our previous residence and loved every bit of it.

The question I have is all this questionable HOA utility reimbursement/timewarner billing I've been reading about here and actually had another neighbor ask me what it was about. It seems like my neighbor is being charged double...but that is a separate issue.

Since I'm rather new to Mueller...I don't have a statement yet. I know I pre-paid some months and fees at closing. However...I'm hoping I'm not getting charged $50 a month for this bulk cable deal with Timewarner when I'm not using their service. This can't be possible...can it?

The funny thing...I never heard or saw any documentation of any Timewarner deal from Meritage before or after we signed our contract.

If you're not using any TW services (Internet or cable TV) then you certainly shouldn't be charged for anything except the POA assessment. Typically, people pay two months POA assessment in advance at closing. When this is exhausted, you should be billed for $40 per month. There's nothing obligatory about the TW services.

If you have any questions, contact Jennifer Harvey, the POA administrator. She's usually very responsive - jharvey@allianceonline.net.

Welcome to the 'hood.

No, you shouldn't be charged the extra charge for Time Warner unless you are a TW subscriber. I have lived here for a little more than a year, never had TW and have never been charged for their service on my HOA bill.

TW has a deal for Mueller residents. If you participate in it, they bill you part of your bill through the HOA. Not sure on the details why, but that is how it is set up.

I don't believe the double billing was a prevalent phenomenon, and I'd like to think that Alliance has gotten some of the initial kinks worked out for our neighborhood. I've also not heard of anyone using U-Verse also being billed for TW through the HOA. The problem described previously may have started with TW, since most of their representatives were not aware of the special deal through our HOA.

It may take awhile for you to receive your first bill, but if you do have concerns, Jennifer Harvey should be able to provide you with contact info for the billing department of Alliance (sorry - I don't have a bill in front of me!) They were very helpful when I had some initial questions upon receiving our first bill.

Alliance did add the TW charge into our monthly fees even though we have at&t for internet and do not have a TV. An email to Jennifer Harvey corrected the situation and we haven't had any problems since then. Just keep an eye on the first bill for questionable charges.
