Anyone else get contacted by Fox 7 for a solar panels not being allowed piece? I was tempted to do it, but I am not certain the restrictions are finalized yet.

please be careful when dealing with news outlets. make sure you know what the direction is of the story. negative press is our last effort when all else has failed I would think.

What a great opportunity for a win both for the Mueller homeowners and Catellus. The homeowners want the ability to put solar panels on their home and Catellus wants good press.

Can we find a way to work with Catellus on this media contact?

I'm probably going to turn them down just based on the "production value" these news companies tend to do.

I've also got some more knowledge on the solar restrictions so I'm more informed now.

Karen has a great point. What if you spoke with Catellus and informed them of the story and tried to figure out a way for it to be positive? They are likely to run the story anyway with or without your comment. We do want the press on Mueller now to remain positive.

I've talked to both my builder and Catellus. I really think this piece is intended to be negative and I really don't want to be a part of that. Sure we can't have solar panels on our house during the initial building, but we are allowed to later on provided we pass some sort of governance council. I really suggest we try to get some homeowners on this board. I had a pretty good conversation with Catellus today. The best thing about this experience is I totally now know what's going on with the solar panels.

It was completely hard to turn down the tv interview as I should be on television every night, but I'm not going to be manipulated.

Why aren't solar panels allowed during the initial building? I would think that if a developer offered solar systems as part of the initial construction, the whole process of "solarizing" houses would be less expensive and therefore more attractive to the purchasers.

I would think that the solar company would be able to plan for several houses, purchase supplies based on a larger order, and pass that savings on to the final purchaser. Additionally, I would think that installing these systems during initial constuction would require less tear-apart-and-fix, therefore the labor expense would be decreased if the systems are installed during constuction.

Am I wrong?

Solar rebates?
by GarrethWilcock on January 12th, 2009

I'm wondering if this is because you can only get the huge Austin Energy rebates if you're the owner / occupier of a home, rather than the builder.

I think that it is the builders not wanting to do it. They have to get the training/certification. At least that's what our builder implied.
