My 5 month old puppy got ahold of a screw (I think one of the ones that the construction workers left behind in my back yard when they built my house). He vomited blood and the screw, and we took him to his vet at Banfield. They checked him out and said he looked okay and since he hadn't vomited anymore blood, they said he should be okay. Well, he started again about 30 minutes after we got home, so I called them back to see what we should do. They said they couldn't do anything since they were closing soon and I should take him to an emergency vet clinic. Does anyone know of an after hours clinic or a veterinarian to I can get something for to help him quit vomiting, and an injection of fluids under his skin for fairly inexpensive? I can't afford an expensive emergency vet clinic right now and I'm scared for my puppy. I lost my last puppy (Choco) to a similar situation, except it was rocks he ate. I've tried getting the Banfied to help me figure out of its behavioral or a deficiency and so far theyve only had me switch his food. I don't feel like I've gotten much help from them and now I'm starting to panic. Any suggestions or referrals would be helpful and appreciated! Thank you.

For a regular vet, I highly recommend Austin Vet Hospital.

Dr. Palvino is awesome & lives here in the neighborhood. If you call their phone number after hours, I think they refer you to an after-hours clinic on their recording. I know there is one across from Central Market on Lamar but forget the name.

Hope your puppy will be okay!

Oh my gosh! I hope the puppy is ok!!!! Please let us know!!!

There is an emergency vet in Austin and they have two branches. Up north, down south. I've been to the north one, and can not speak highly enough on how they treated my cat. Very amazing staff.

Unfortunately, I will never go back to Banfield, especially not in Mueller. I'm with Lorrie on Austin Vet Hospital and Dr. Palvino. I give him (and his staff, and the other vets there) top marks. The only comment I have for them is that I wish they were IN Mueller. :)

I third Dr. Palvino as a regular vet...he takes great care of our dogs and there are plenty of other threads about vets in general on this site. I hope your puppy is okay and he got seen yesterday.

Thank y'all! I had met Dr. Palvino once in the park, but had forgotten his name. Thanks for reminding me. Hershey pulled through and seems like he's going to be okay. He's back acting like his normal self. I agree...after the puppy plan I prepaid for a year expires, I will never go back to Banfield.

Thanks again!

Glad to hear he's ok... I would add Banfield is terrible across the board. On the off chance you find a vet you like, odds are they'll be gone by your next visit.

I have to throw in a rec for Lake Austin Blvd. Animal Hospital & Drs Spitz & Herndon. They flat out saved my cat's life (he had severe pancreatitis) while doing what they could to keep my costs down. They aren't cheap, but they also won't push you to buy things you don't need. They are also open until 9 PM on weekdays, saturdays 9-3.

I would also add Dr. Cotnam at Austin Vet Care (across from Central Market on Lamar) to the list of friendly, accommodating and convenient vets. I have been taking our pup to him for 6 months and have always received great care and service. Plus, they are a 24-hour emergency care facility, so if we ever needed to go in for something unexpected, they already know our history/information, etc.
Glad to hear that Hershey is doing better!

Hey all, my first post as a new neighbor ;)

Guess this topic really caught my eye.

First, I'm probably way late to the game, but hopefully puppy is ok.

Second, I've been in the pet business forevuh... and have a lot of friends that are vets and vet techs.

Third, I'd stay away from Banfield, and I've heard nothing good about the emergency care facility across from Central Market.

The highest recommended vet from my friends is constantly Rob Spitz at Lake Austin Boulevard Animal Hospital. As far as prices, I too thought they weren't cheap, but when a few of my friends looked at my invoices, they said that they were actually fairly priced. In 10 years, I've only questioned them once, and it was clearly a misunderstanding on my part.

And in case this happens again -or puppy eats something else he's not supposed to - hydrogen peroxide down the throat!

Hydrogen peroxide works to induce vomiting, but that might be a bad idea if you know he ate something sharp. I guess I should clarify my earlier statement - I work with a lot of college age kids whose primary focus with most things is cost. If I send them to my vet, I want them to go in knowing that it won't be $25 and you're out the door. I think LABAH is fairly priced and really, really good at what they do. http://labah.com/

If you need emergency care, Emergency Animal Hospital of Northwest Austin has two locations. They also do the overnight care for Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital. The Specialty hospital is amazing, hope that you never need their services but be glad they're there. If they trust someone to handle their overnight, I'd trust those people to be the best 24-hour vet available. http://www.eahnwa.com/

Yeah, I did know about the hydrogen peroxide, but like it was just noted, I wasn't sure if he ate anything else sharp. I kind of doubted it, but didn't want to chance it. I know costs aren't cheap at vets offices, but they wanted almost $170 for X-rays to see if anything else was in there. I guess X-rays aren't a part of my puppy plan. When I asked if they could reduce the costs a little, they said no. That's what upset me. I know they have to make a living, but they could've given me some kind of break I think. They just said good luck and call them Monday (today) to let them know how Hershey was doing. They said all this after they told me the situation didn't sound good and they implied Hershey would die. Thank god they were wrong! I do appreciate all the recommendations! That's one of the reasons I love living here...everyone's always so helpful and friendly. Thank you all again!
