Have you been missing your green Ford Explorer? If so, it might be the one that's been parked in front of my house for the past couple of weeks, just south of the McCloskey and Threadgill intersection.

In the bi-laws (or covenants or whatever you call them) for the 'hood that we all signed when we purchased our homes there is a parking limitation...I believe either 36-48 maybe 72 hours, but the POA never enforced it and I think that a non-binding/informal vote was taken a year or so ago and the majority of voters didn't want the parking limitation enforced. I am careful to say majority of voters because I don't know if it was or is currently the majority opinion of residents. So, we end up with situations like these where someone may leave a car for perpetuity. It's a public street so there's really nothing to be done unless the car is parked illegally. If it is parked illegally you can report it here (http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/city_survey/survey.cfm?id=F83D37B4-0BCF-034D-9966DCD63DA0539C) although of course if you tow a neighbor's car that probably isn't going to put you at the top of their gift list. And, just because someone doesn't respond to you here doesn't indicate the car is abandoned, not everyone uses this site.

I don't mean to state an opinion on the issue or start a flame war between the two camps (some people really want on-street parking while some want the covenant enforced) as we've already had several contentous threads on this issue. My intent is just to give you a little background on the history of the issue.

Non-binding vote or not - I believe you still have the option of reporting it to the POA - i.e. Jennifer Harvey (jharvey@allianceonline.net or 512-347-2888).

Or, call 311. The POA will likely be much more responsive, but the City/APD will probably look to see if the vehicle is currently registered, and if so, may call back (ask for a return call) to say nothing can be done. They use to place big yellow stickers on the car window to notify that the car would be towed within a short time frame, but I haven't seen one of those in awhile.

You might try taping a big (preferably brightly colored) and anonymous note on the window that you'll be pursuing having it towed if it's not moved within a few days. Hope this gets resolved for you soon.

Good luck getting this resolved. We had a black VW Passat parked in front of our house for MONTHS. Never moved. We, and other neighbors, complained to everyone we could think of, to no avail. Finally it got a flat tire (wasn't me) right before the Mueller Parade of Homes and they came and towed it away.

A week later, cars on our block were vandalized with white shoe polish. I'm not saying there was a connection, but...

People who leave cars unattended in front of other people's homes for long periods of time don't tend to have much respect for fairness or their neighbors' feelings. The POA and City of Austin don't really care about stuff like this, either, so you're on your own. Please let us know what happens.

When I lived in the South Bronx we had a gold 82 Chevy Nova parked out in front of our apartment block. Everyday more and more parts would go missing until someone set it on fire. That got the city's attention and they finally towed (dragged?) it away. So, maybe, cut to the chase?

All is well. As it turns out, the car belongs to a guest of a neighbor, who happily moved it to a more convenient out-of-the-way place. My real concern was that someone from outside the neighborhood had left the car to decay on our neighborhood street, so I'm glad to know that's not the case.

I did really enjoy the stories about the Passat and the Nova, though.

I'm glad I checked the site first I was just about to go over there and "repurpose" the rims for a backyard sculpture.

I love this version of Ford Explorer a lot better than the old versions. There's just something about this version that helps me do my ford dealership work properly. The old versions never allowed me to do that, and I was sad about that.
