Are your meters on the inside of your fenceline? Our water, gas, and electric are on the outside.

I actually saw security patrolling during the neighborhood during the day and early evening after the incident. I'm not sure if that was a response from the HOA to my e-mail, but it was comforting to see.

Between the cost of new glass for the door and my hail damage, this has not been a good month. This may be tacky to ask, but does anyone need a massage besides me? I could use the extra work - http://www.handsonyou.com

I didnt call the gas company as my meter is on the outside of the gate. However, my utility meter is on the inside of the gate.

The City of Austin said that you can either provide them with the combination to the lock if you put a combination lock on the gate, or they can put you on the self-read program. With the self-read program, the homeowner reads the meter once a month and puts a card with the data on the gate the day the meter is read. Then the City only needs access once a year to read the meter. The gas company may have a similar program or way to accomodate you.

Holy crap! That picture looks more like an attempted home invasion than a burglary!

If the alarm hadn't scared them away and they had encountered someone in the house, this could have turned ugly in a hurry. Have the Austin police been out to take a report?

Sorry to hear about your attempted break in. Several of the surrounding neighborhood have had a rash of what are described as smash and grab burgleries. Often in broad daylight-early morning or noon.

I wanted to add to your comments about the meter being in the yard. It was my understanding Mueller homes were going to be on the new meters which don't have to be read by a meter reader. We currently live near Mueller and the city has just installed one on our home. It no longer requires someone actually reading the meter but sends a signal to the city instead.

Crime is on the rise:

The most notable increase was for larceny-theft and property crime, which rose by 2,899 and 3,880 respectively.

I'm not sure how many of you guys know this, but the city of Austin actually has a pretty cool GIS system available online. Among many other things, there is a crime viewer included in it. Surprisingly they've even added all of the streets for the first phase of Mueller. The system is a little difficult to use, especially if you've never used GIS before, but I think most people can probably figure it out. I navigated to the site by way of:

http://coagis1.ci.austin.tx.us/website/COAViewer_dev/devviewer_disclaimer.htm http://coagis1.ci.austin.tx.us/website/COAViewer_dev/devviewer_disclaimer.htm
Select the 'Crime Viewer' from the bottom select bar.

...alternatively you might be able to get there directly by going here:
http://coagis1.ci.austin.tx.us/website/CrimeViewer/viewer.htm http://coagis1.ci.austin.tx.us/website/CrimeViewer/viewer.htm

A quick search revealed the following crime stats between 12/11/2006 and 06/11/2008. I thought I'd go ahead and post the results here just in case anyone was interested in what the crime has been like in the immediate area over the past 1.5 yers.

Most of that seems to be construction-related, but it's still not good because Mueller will be under construction for a long time. Construction traffic invites this sort of petty crime because nobody knows who's supposed to be in the neighborhood and who isn't. That's why it is crucial that the builders keep all construction parking, loading, activity, etc contained within the phase that's currently being built.

I understand that they'll have to use our streets to get to Phase II, but if we know construction personnel aren't parking in/using Phase I once it's complete, it will be a lot easier to keep an eye out for suspicious persons.

While most house break-ins are going to occur during the day when no one is home, it's easier to spot those who shouldn't be in the neighborhood in the evenings. Awhile ago, we were walking around the StanPac construction sites and kept spotting a white SUV driving slowly down the alleys. I assumed it was just some construction workers leaving late, but Timothy guessed they were looking to loot one of the construction sites. We kept seeing them - and more importantly, they kept seeing us - and finally they gave up and left.

Fortunately, our neighborhood is designed to get us out of our houses, walking around, and that physical presence is at least a step towards deterring crime.

Wow! Several thoughts about the crime report for our area . . .

Is anybody here NOT committing a crime? It looks statistically like we're all involved in the crime wave. I'd suggest we call on Charlie Eppes, the mathmatical genius character on the CBS crime drama, Numb3rs, to do some sine wave theoretical work to give us his rock solid prediction on where the next crime will be committed and a probablistic notion of who did/will do the crime. My rough mathematical projection is the next hit will be somewhere close to the pool area and will involve felonious bathing attire around 1PM on Saturday, June 14th. But then again, I'm no Charlie Eppes.

We could also perhaps correlate the crime data against the violation of Mueller design standards. Will - for example - we all be required to buy exactly the same fake lock to put on our back gates? I am increasingly concerned that my fake lock be bigger or better than the Jones's fake lock next door.

And lastly, given my observations at the most recent Mueller Neighborhood Association meeting at how all of us look; does anybody have any constructive guidance to distinguish outside suspicious characters from the rest of us?
