The City of Austin’s upcoming budget eliminates funding for the Dottie Jordan Recreation Center. This Rec Center is a much used facility, with lots of programs for children and the elderly, exercise and fitness classes, neighborhood meetings, and much, much more throughout the day and into the evenings, weekdays and weekends. As one proponent of Dottie Jordan says, “This place is not only the beating heart of University Hills, it is part of the community circulatory system for Pecan Springs, Windsor Park, and other neighborhoods around here. It is a busy place.”

The Northeast Austin Business and Community Alliance has scheduled a meeting on the proposed closure at the Dottie Jordan Recreation Center, 2803 Loyola Lane,78723 Tuesday, August 23, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Dear Council Member Tovo,

I am writing to express my opposition to closing the Dottie Jordan Recreation Center. I was just at a meeting where I (along with over 60 other people) learned about the extensive uses of this center. I invite you and other members of council to carefully examine the numbers. But, more important than even the high use is the fact that Dottie Jordan is at the center of this and surrounding neighborhoods. As such it gives meaning and support to the larger community.

I know you to be a proponent of neighborhoods. Please examine the role and importance of the Dottie Jordan Recreation Center to University Hills and other area neighborhoods. I think you will see how all of us would be served by continuing the 40 year life of this very important institution.
