Changes to Alliance/TW cable/internet deal? Clear vs U-verse comparison
by dhs on March 11th, 2012

And you'll pay a steep install fee if getting U-verse internet and not already a cable subscriber (like $150). But you get what you pay for.

Do they waive the install fee if you are a TW cable subscriber switching to just U-verse internet? Given that AT&T/SBC had a clean slate in Mueller, installation should be cheaper (free?) than $150.

Are they (re)using the coax wire that TW uses (and hence the waiver for existing CATV customers)? If not, what kind of wire do they need from our external boxes to our internal wiring closet/onQ box?

And is anyone using their own modem for U-verse? I don't want and won't use their router, prefer to pick/install my own equipment in my own house, and find their $100/year equipment rental charge to be unreasonable.

Thanks,
Doug

The install fee isn't really about labor cost, it's about deterring you from signing up for cheap monthly packages. They typically waive it if you sign up for more expensive packages (like cable w/ internet). Check w/ AT&T.

I don't know about the cabling, but the equipment includes both an AT&T UPS and a modem that includes both wired (4-port) and wireless routers. As far as I could tell there was no router-less modem offered, but I will say the wireless router seems to be high quality. It reaches parts of my home that my workhorse Linksys WRT54GLs won't.

Finally, don't let any of these companies sell you local phone service. Our last ordinary copper-wire phone (POTS) was a dozen years ago. Since then we've had VOIP from TimeWarner, U-verse, and Clear. None of them had better quality than our current service from ooma, which has a higher upfront cost (~$180), but then costs a mere $3.67 per month, long-distance included. So the break-even point in comparison to any of the above is at about 6-8 months.

My experience with U-verse has been almost universally good, except for the wireless router. I had to reboot it every 2-3 days and dealing with AT&T customer service for such an issue is a good way to go insane. I ended up getting a cheapo wireless router of my own and have now disabled the wireless router in the AT&T box.

It has been nearly a month since we received the POA email telling us that the Time Warner deal was expiring. According to the email,

Further information about this transition will be sent in March. TWC plans to begin calling residents directly to assist you with this process, they also plan to host a neighborhood event to answer questions. TWC will continue to be a preferred provider at Mueller and can offer very competitive rates to our residents. We will continue to share updated information on this process over the next few months.

I have not received a call, letter in the mail or seen an event listed. Has anyone else received information or a call? If so, please share with the group. I have been anxiously awaiting to hear about those "very competive rates".
thanks,
Sandy

We have heard nothing from them regarding the transition either.

Speaking of TWC, anyone's cable tv out this evening or is it just ours? A technician is scheduled to come Thursday.

AT&T U-verse is looking pretty good right now...

I switched to AT&T Uverse from our neighborhood bulk TWC deal two weeks ago, and I can already tell you that I'm 200% more satisfied! I pay $8 more a month and have the U300, which has the movie package (Showtime & Starz)...I even cancelled Netflix because since they've split their services, their on demand movie selection is horrible...I find lots of good movies on now with my Uverse. I highly recommend switching to AT&T!

Grande if you are out there listening, this is a good opportunity to get a few clients!

We have done with out cable since August of 2011. My wife has made it wthout her "housewives" shows, and I've gone without football, March Madness, etc. Though to be fair I was on the field officiating games, so watching them live was pretty out of the question.

If we can make it thourgh Le Tour this summer and the Olympics then we'll be okay. I think we can actually live without cable!!

I've posted before about the issues we have with TW internet. It would just cycle on and off for days, not allowing much of anything to happen. I have hours and hours of service calls logged and service visits, none of which would permanently fix the problem, or even figure out what was going on. We switched to AT&T, and at this point, if we had to reset our router every few days, that would be heaven. So far, we have not had any problems and are very happy.

When I called to cancel TW, they did not understand how we were being billed. It was as if they couldn't see the setup. And then, despite all the service calls logged, they still tried to get me to upgrade to faster internet instead of cancelling, or keep basic cable.

I have always had trouble with TW, but at this point, I think they may have lost a customer for life. They could offer free internet and I wouldn't take it.

Hello. I would love this AT&T package mentioned "I switched to AT&T Uverse from our neighborhood bulk TWC deal two weeks ago, and I can already tell you that I'm 200% more satisfied! I pay $8 more a month and have the U300".

However, I was wondering that price also includes the internet? I will need the bundle and am hoping to stay near the TW price. Thanks!
