Changes to Alliance/TW cable/internet deal? Clear vs U-verse comparison
by misselaine on April 30th, 2012

Sorry if this was already mentioned, most likely was, do we have to call and cancel TWC? I am pretty sure they dont' know who we are because when I have called in the past, they don't recognize the HOA account number. So I am not sure how they could keep billing me now that I have moved on to AT&T.

Changes to Alliance/TW cable/internet deal? Clear vs U-verse comparison

MissElaine:

They did seem to know us by the phone number on record - that's how they pull up our account whenever we've called (a LOT lately).

I was also told that if I didn't cancel, effective today, my TWC rate would jump to the "regular rate" -- I think it was in the ballpark of $120. So last week I switched to the basic cable plus internet and it went into effect today.

Considering how disjointed everything else with TWC has been, I was a little surprised to see that the change actually went into effect today... kinda thought it might be a few days until we actually lost our cable channels...So long HGTV & Food Network - we'll miss you!

Oh, dear. I really figured I didn't have to call because of what J . Harvey said in the emails. She specifically said we had to contact them to keep service, or get disconnected (which is what I want). Well, they're closed now. I'll scream bloody murder if they charge me.

Looks like TWC was quick to roll out the changes - I had switched to the $40 package containing basic cable plus 10Mbps internet, as of this morning the old "standard cable" channels are gone.

Intenet seems a bit faster thought, http://speedtest.net shows 24Mbps where previously I'd never get more than 15. I think the old package plan was only rated at 5Mbps.

Changes to Alliance/Time-Warner cable/internet deal?

Earlier this year, in an attempt to cut back on expenses, I cancelled my land line and cable tv with TWC. I took the DVR and remote to the store over at Hancock center. No one had to come to my home to disconnect any of these services. And, there was no charge. I now only have TWC internet-Turbo for $42 and change per month. I think it would be helpful when folks are quoting prices for TWC or any of the other provider services that they state clearly what they are getting for the prices they are quoting. Also, as you all have probably discovered, not all of the employees information is created equal. The guy at the store said I needed to bring my modem in and there was going to be a charge or something. But I still need my modem for the internet. I talked to someone over the phone at TWC to straighten all of that out. The guy at the store obviously misunderstood me or didn't know what he was talking about. Good luck!

We don't have time to deal with TW at the moment, so we canceled our TV service and just kept the interwebs. I'm going to take my time and look into alternatives to TW. By the way Hulu Plus sucks. I just tried their 1 week trial and was ready to kick it to the curb after five minutes.

I just called to cancel all TWC armed with my phone number and address only. The girl was pretty confused on how to disconnect my services. Do they do it? Does the HOA end do it? I was on hold for awhile until she figured it out. Apparently, I just have to return the modem within the week and they won't charge me. But, be prepared for a long sales talk about how crappy U-verse is compared to them and why I shouldn't disconnect.

That may help someone...

Just out of curiosity, has anyone in the neighborhood who is reading this tried an antenna to pick up the major networks? I'd like to know how successful that is in terms of signal quality.

I have an indoor antenna (one of the black square looking ones) in our living room (near windows on the west side of the house). I'm able to get all of the major stations in great (FOX sometimes get a little blocky and have to just tweak it a bit), plus a handful of the Spanish/offbeat stations and UT's student TV network (and BloombergTV that they air on their subchannel).

The only thing I've tried to pull in and couldn't was KXAN's sister station (KBVO?). They air some HS football games that would have been fun to catch a little of.

Upstairs, we have an old antenna with one of the analog converter boxes. NBC/CBS/ABC/PBS are all perfect. FOX is difficult (requiring us moving the antenna a bit).

The HD quality is actually better than with cable.
