by HornsFan on April 25th, 2012

True that! Unfortunately I have plans on Saturday so I won't be able to make this.

??? $39.99 would have been good, but they didn't offer that for sure. Although, on second thought, why pay for basic at all when you can do rabbit ears.

Right now, with TMC, when we test our download speed we normally get around 6mbps, at least in the evenings when everyone else is online. That is why we didn't want to chance anything lower than 10.

AT&T direct has cheaper bundles, but I think the internet only went to 6mbps, (mine goes to eleven)-had to add that quote in there.

I haven't read through these updates, but in case somebody didn't already mention this, I believe AT&T charges extra for streaming data over a certain amount -- it's limited. I am a Netflix streamer through the Blu-Ray and it's unlimited from Time Warner. Never have to worry about going over a limit with TW, so if you're looking at AT&T be sure to ask them about that.

I called TWC again based on Henning's information and straight up asked for the $39.99/month for the 10Mbps speed and they gave it to me. They did actually offer a "local channel" deal along with the 20Mbps internet for only $10 extra a month, but that confused me even more. He told me that the local channels weren't free anymore, but I thought that you could pick up the digital signals with a digital antenna.

Either way, I'll figure out the TV option later. As of now, I went with the same deal that Henning got which was the $39.99/month. If you call them like I did and sign up for something, make sure you ask them to start the service after our deal with the neighborhood ends.

Cheers,
Ben

U-verse High Speed Internet includes 250 GB /month. http://www.att.com/internet-usage. Amazon Instant delivers HD movies to a TiVo with a 6 Mbit/sec encoding.

250 GByte * 1024 MByte/GByte * 8 Mbit/MByte
--------------------------------------- = 94.8 Hours
6 Mbit/sec * 60 sec/min * 60 min/hr

So you can stream three hours each day of the highest possible quality Amazon video and not hit the limit.

As of last year, Netflix's top HD streams were about 4800 kilobits per second. http://techblog.netflix.com/2011/01/netflix-performance-on-top-isp-networks.html This gives you 120 hours of Netflix HD streaming per month, or 3.9 hours per day, before hitting the AT&T U-verse limit.

Changes to Alliance/Time-Warner cable/internet deal?

I called TWC back today and flat out asked for Katy (based on Henning's post) but Erica didn't know which Katy to switch me to...

So, I asked Erica if she can offer me the same deal as my neighbor got and she did - $39.99 for internet and basic cable. It's effective 4/30/12 and I'm a happy camper.

Sadly we will miss the Saturday TWC fun in the park, so if they announce any kind of neighborhood special at that time that's better than this $39.99 deal, please post on here so those of us missing the event can stay in the loop.

Thanks!

So I called TWC yesterday and what I got quoted was the "all the best" plan for $89.99 - Standard internet (10 Mbps), basic digital cable, and digital phone. It did not include the DVR/converter box which would add $8.99/month making it a total of $98.99 before taxes. We currently have the turbo charged internet (15 Mbps) and expressed a concern that we might notice a difference in our service if we go with the standard. The guy, Ron, offered to see if he could get us 6 months of turbo charged for free. I haven't decided what to do yet.

One option I've considered is just going with the internet servie (hopefully the same $39.99 deal) but alas I'd miss my ESPN and other sports channels. Got me to wondering if the "WatchESPN" and TWC Cable apps on my Ipad would still work if I don't susbscribe to the TWC cable. I did some googleing last night and it looks like the Watch ESPN app works if you don't have cable but I couldn't confirm if the TWC app does. We really like Anthony Bourdain's shows as well as House Hunters International so it'd be great to still watch those.

Does anyone know if the TWC Cable app works if you don't subsribe to their cable service?

re: HornsFan

The rep yesterday did actually offer me the Turbo level internet and the basic cable we currently have for only $10 extra a month more than the $39.99/month deal for the standard internet service only. Although I wasn't thinking correctly at the time and didn't take that, I might call back and ask for that service when it's all said and done. That's a pretty good deal considering we'd be getting a little bit faster internet plus the cable we currently have for the same price we're paying (well...it's probably about $10 more if you add the tax to that, but you get the idea).

Cheers,
Ben
