Summer Day Camp Suggestions
by Daniel Colimon on April 14th, 2011

Hello Neighbors,

My family is relatively new to Austin (and Texas). We are looking for a fun day camp for our 5.5 year old this summer. Something with lots of outdoor activities, creative, fun, artistic stuff and if possible Texas "themed" activities.

Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated.

The camps I am about the mention, we have participated in for years, first with our 18 year old, and now with our almost 8 year old; however, the catch is they are likely already full. That is something you should know (and wouldn't being new to Austin) - some of the best summer camps fill up in March. It is completely crazy that you have to start planning for summer camps in January but that has been the case for us for the last 10 years.

Our favorite are Austin Nature and Science camps -

Our daughter also loved Dougherty Arts Center, although our son didn't ask to go back after his first year:

Our son is going to Mad Science camp for the first time this year so I don't have a first-hand review but I have heard really good things:

Best of luck and I am sure there will be many other great suggestions coming your way!

This link has a bunch of summer camp options to look into:

If you don't need full day summer camps Zoey is going to some great ones including: - art classes from this artist (she does them in her home studio in Windsor Park and at Laguna Gloria)...

They are all half day camps though....but all are wonderful.

Thank you Karen and Alicia for these great suggestions. I sincerely appreciate your insight. I will get cracking on this right away! I should have guessed that Summer planning begins in January.

Hi Daniel,

If those are all full, I've got one more option for you. The Austin Children's Museum also has summer camps and I know for a fact that some of them still have open slots because I work there! ;0P

Some of the choices include: Crazy for Critters, Cooking with Math, Young Scientists, Dino Mania, EcoSafari, and Bodies, Brains, & Bones! I'm sure he would enjoy one of more of these!

Here's the link for more info:

Good luck!
