No leash no Park! You must be joking!!!!

Well, call me a crazy, but I appreciate the signs. They are only going to be up for a couple of weeks, they remind people of the park etiquette - which makes the park a better place for everyone. Many people that use the park are totally unaware that they should scoop poop and keep their dog leashed. I'm sure the landscape committee would love to have involvement from more residents. If fact there are many committees that could use more voices, opinions, sign writers and members.

This reflects my opinion as well.

Henning

As stated earlier, I don't have a problem with the signs. That said, I do have 2 dogs and would love to have an off leash area within Mueller. As Ms Ice Monkey stated, this is dealing with the problem in a more proactive way.

Off leash
by danx111 on March 5th, 2011

This from last year when this issue was discussed:

Sara Hensley, Austin Parks Director ( Sara.Hensley@ci.austin.tx.us), in discussion about need for dog park on East Side has asked for residents to contact her regarding the possible addition of an off-leash are in BARTHOLOMEW PARK when the park is re-developed. If you are a dog owner who would like to see this happen send Sara an email; spread the word to others. This will not happen without support from surrounding neighborhoods

No offense, but that's patently absurd. And putting out multiple ugly signs everywhere you turn isn't education.

This isn't about off-leash areas being available in Mueller, and this isn't about poop on the ground. We have broad agreement that those are bad things.
This is about littering our parks with ridiculous, wasteful, rude signs that make our neighborhood look uptight and petty.

Signs

I was so happy to walk yesterday at Lake Park and see no dogs off leash! I felt much safer and more at ease. I think the signs are doing their job and am happy to have them around for the next couple weeks as the parks get busier.
Thank you to the landscape committee and all the other volunteer committees who do so much all year to make Mueller a great place to live.

I want to extend my thanks as well! I know there are a lot of residents who take the time to make our neighborhood so great.

Signs

Really don't see the big deal behind the signs. They are just going to be there for a few weeks. For those who pick up after their dogs - thank you. I walk daily with my kids in the stroller and there is dog poop all over the place - not really pleasant and I don't really want to let the kids run around at certain spots in the park.

I understand that the poop bag dispensers haven't been full frequently but if you are a dog owner, isn't it your responsibility to have the bags to pick up after your dog anyway?

Surprised at the drama going on with people questioning why they live in the neighborhood over some temporary signs.

Big thanks to the landscape committee for trying to bring attention to an annoying issue. The signs may not be artsy but it at least gets a reminder out to both residents and non-residents to pick up after your dog because clearly some people aren't doing it.

I agree that there are WAY too many signs in our parks. I completely agree with the sentiment -- dog owners should be reminded to keep their dogs on leash and of course pick up their dog's poop. The signs are irritating, though, and insulting. I completely agree that it's not neighborly to harass one's neighbors with these strident signs.

With respect to the issue of leashless dogs in general, I have personally not observed a problem. The only dogs I've observed off-leash have been fetching a frisbee or running with their owner. I don't think people who have voice control over their dogs should be penalized.

Like others on the blog, I very much appreciate the efforts of the Landscape Committee. May I suggest, though, that perhaps the committee could focus on another important issue -- the quality of the grass in the parks. The grass is ridden with weeds, is extremely sparse in places, and in general is not too healthy (drought and winter notwithstanding). I would rather have our homeowners' dollars spent on improving the grass than on the signs.
