I asked long time TV weatherman Troy Kimmel about this one time. His reply was that it was pronounced Miller and for those who grew up on Austin radio and TV broadcasts that would be all they would have ever heard.
Quote: For the same reason that I don't call Lake Austin Ladybird Lake,
You might want to call it "Town Lake," since that's the one that was changed to "Ladybird." But I refuse to call it Ladybird Lake also, for the same reasons. (And also because I'm a Republican and because "Ladybird Lake" has to many L sounds.)
I live in the ueller Community (711 acres) or the 711! I am from Austin, as was my father, grandfather. My Great Grandfather cut hair at 6th and Congress in before 1900. His father, my great Grandfather lived here and was a shoe cobbler. We are German-Chezk-polish etc...as are many settlers of this area.
I grew up on Broadmore and Berkman (just north of the airport), My Grandparents lived near Lafayette and 38 1/2 (just South of the airport).
It is a German thing guys! My father said "Miller" as did all those before me.
I would hear "Miller" and "Myouler"" growing up and would just avoid talking about it to avoid the issue, except when I wanted to taunt my father and grandfather with an occasional "Myouler". My grandmother would join in with me on the fun. I would usually just call it the "Airport"...or over by "Ragsdale".
I prefer to say "Myouler" now but I think I may go back-and-forth as I continue to live at the "Airport".
Navigating Austin is always fun/frustrating for out-of-towners as there are many names for the same streets and roads. Keeping true to confusion we should call Mueller..."the 711", "Myouler", "Miller", "the Airport", etc...from my experience this will always be the case. have fun!
Wikipedia...Robert Mueller Municipal Airport (Mueller is pronounced /ˈmɪlər/ "miller") served the Austin, Texas, United States area until it was replaced by the Austin Bergstrom International Airport and subsequently closed in 1999. Whether the aging Mueller should be relocated to Manor, Texas, was a perennial issue in Austin politics, until the closure of Bergstrom Air Force Base opened another possibility.[2]
The 711-acre (288 ha) area that once housed the airport sat dormant for almost ten years until the city finally approved a planned urban development. The new Mueller Community broke ground in 2007 and is expected to take at least ten years to be fully developed. END Wiki...
Also, though I really don't like change...i.e. "Ladybird Lake"....I am adapting as best I can. She began the beautification of not only Austin and the surrounding Hill-country, she spearheaded the beautification/creation of what became the hike-and-bike trail around "Town-lake"...whoops! Sorry Ladybird! She managed her husbands political life who was just a local area down to earth kinda guy (does not matter if you liked his policies...), and created an icon "KLBJ". She probably would have prefered to continue to call "Ladybird lake""Townlake" and thar is the biggest reason why I do my best to call it by it's new name.
Besides living on Threadgill, I own another property on "Manshack" please don't call it Man-cha-ca. I never hung out on "Gua-da-lu-pe" but I did hang out on "Guadaloop". I actually went to the drive-in as a kid on "Burn-it" ...not "Burn-net". I bought carefully to avoid confusion..kinda hard to mess up "Threadgill" but you might mess up a girlfriend of mine's street ..Mattie...did someone say "ahoy-matey". Kidding guys! As I said, point is...have fun! We live in a great town.
What is really funny is when the out-of-towners end up on what they think is 290 but called Co-a-nig or kay-nig, but maybe it's Allendale, my god that sign says "City Park next left", is this "2222" or perhaps we have been driving on Ben White all along?

Oops, that was what I meant to say, Town Lake. Duh. And, what? A republican lives here? :)

There you go, insulting poor Northland Drive, that oft-overlooked stretch between Allandale and 2222.
We can add this to the growing list of funny mispronunciations around town that distinguish the locals from the newbies - BURN-et, Man-shack, MAY-nor, Guadaloop...
It can be confusing living on Tom Miller, in Mueller, though... I pronounce Mueller like Miller, but always say, "you know, where the old airport used to be." Although, I often encounter people who don't know where the old airport used to be!
I, too, say "where the old airport used to be" and I say Miller. I grew up in Manchaca and went to Menchaca Elementary. We pronounced the town Man-chack, and the school Men-Chok-uh. :)
