Some of you may recall that TxDOT came and presented to us about the changes that they are proposing for the I35 corridor. After much review I have come to the conclusion that some of the proposed changes are bad for Mueller and East Austin.

There are a number of changes that are of concern, however the two that really stand out are:

1. The closure of the on/off ramps from/to Airport Blvd/I35 upper deck (in combination with closing all on/off ramps on the lower deck).

2. The implementation of super streets concept in combination with the changes to the 45th/Airport blvd intersection which will serve to turn I35 into a bigger barrier to east/west connectivity. (see the video below from Reconnect Austin to get a better understanding about super streets)

Thanks for the update, David. Do you know what would be the closest I35 entrance and exit for Mueller residents under this proposal?

Under the current plans the entrance and exit ramps that will be removed are:

ALL entrance and exit ramps to/from the lower decks, and
The exit and entrance ramps between the upper deck and Airport Blvd.

This will result in about a 2 mile swath through central Austin with no access to or from the main lanes of I-35. The closest entrance or exit will likely depend on where you are in Mueller. But if you are wanting to get to Mueller from I-35 in central Austin you will either have to exit at either 15th Street or Manor and work way up frontage roads, come through on one of the neighborhood streets or exit north of Airport Blvd and enter Mueller via Barbara Jordan.

If leaving Mueller Airport Blvd. will no longer be an option. The best option will be access via 51st Street. Otherwise the only option will be to take the frontage roads to all the way south of 15th Street.

Also remember - Red River is being diverted and will no longer connect directly across 15th Street - so one of the best alternative routes to Mueller that bypasses I-35 will also be impaired.
