Door to door "cleaner" salesman? Anyone else?
by David H. on February 17th, 2014

Dear Muellerites:
A guy came to the door on Saturday afternoon around 4pm to sell household cleaner. He was about 30 years old or so, had a tie on with short pants and also a backpack. Was with Advanage that supposedly helps inner city youth. He was a super fast talker and really nice (at first). I could barely get a word in for about 5 minutes or so. He had quite a long pitch for the product, sprayed a white towel after marking it with a marker (the mark did not go away), stated all kinds of "facts" about struggling kids, etc. When I told him I didn't want the product and didn't buy things this way, he got really ugly and angry with me saying I had a problem. Wondering if anyone else had this issue in Mueller. Next time, I will call the police--this guy had anger issues.

I looked up the company on the internet and found some really disturbing info: see this one post--http://voices.yahoo.com/the-advanage-wonder-cleaner-scam-3168975.html

Suggest you don't wait to call 911 and Jennifer Harvey. Regular patrols and our APD security can keep an eye out for him

We bought some cleaner from probably the same guy. Totally different experience. And the cleaner is pretty awesome. But, not sure how he would have reacted if we said "no". My husband is a sucker, but at least the product works.

I went to the website you posted (http://voices.yahoo.com/the-advanage-wonder-cleaner-scam-3168975.html) and found it helpful, horrifying, detailed, and informative. Please check this site out before buying door to door.

Reading more about this, yeah, I think I need to tell him not to buy anything door to door ever again (unless it's girl scout cookies!). But, like I said, it does work. I had been trying to clean my crock pot forever, and this stuff did it right away. But, now we may get robbed. Awesome.

We had a similarly unpleasant experience with the same guy and another young man who was selling magazines. Contacted Jennifer Harvey about it. Don't think we'll be opening the door for anyone else except friends, neighbors and girl scouts.

Our negative experience was that the magazine subscription that we bought never showed up (this was last summer that I paid for it). But someone did cash my $80 check. I was silly enough not to keep the receipt the girl gave me so I could not pursue it. So I would also caution everyone about the magazine scam.

When you agree to purchase something from a door-to-door salesperson, you have certain protections under the law. Police and news agencies are reporting an increased number of door-to-door frauds across the nation. There may be a bigger number of operators attempting to rip people off, so be wary of any person knocking on the door and trying to sell you stuff. Door-to-door scams involve promoting goods or services that are not delivered or are of a very poor quality.
